Subj: Hair in unwanted places
Date: 11/29/2007
I begun using minoxidil for three months. I did see improvement in my hair. Sadly I had to stop it as I begun to notice hear on my forehead, side burns and down my neck. As I did not have facial hair before, I found it difficult to cope with. As the facial is a side effect of the medicine, will it go away to the original state of nothing! I am really worried. Please advise.

Sam

AskDocWeb: No need to worry, the affects are not permanent.

Subj: Gained 100 pounds
Date: 11/29/2007
My husband has been using minoxidil for more than ten years. In the past 5 years he has gained 100 pounds. He now has high blood pressure and is only 27. I don’t know if this is a side effect or not.

Subj: Brittle hair
Date: 12/1/2007
I have been using minoxidil 2% for approximately four months. I am beginning to get concerned because I either have hair coming in about 1/2″ long at the top of my hairline or else my hair is experiencing breakage. I have been using a blow dryer in the morning to dry my hair after washing with Johnson’s Baby Shampoo simply for the fact the minoxidil makes my hair feel oily if I do not blow dry. Can minoxidil make you have hair breakage?

Anita

AskDocWeb: Minoxidil will not do that but frequent blow-drying will cause hair to become brittle and prone to breakage.

Subj: Contraceptive pill?
Date: 12/3/2007
Does minoxidil affect the contraceptive pill?

Georgina

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Extreme itching
Date: 12/12/2007
I have been using minoxidil for several months. I saw results, like in less than three weeks- was it the mixoidil? I first stated losing hair all over my head (with extreme itching) after the death of my father – also started high blood pressure at that time. My dermatologist recommended this product and it worked seeming too quickly and I stopped-lost some hair, started back, hair growth again but I still have extreme itching. Should I continue?

Eleanor

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you have several interrelated things going on that may be affecting the growth of your hair. As you may know, stress (such as losing a parent) is one cause of hair loss. That kind of hair loss typically stops after a few weeks. On the other hand, some of the drugs used to treat high blood pressure can also cause hair loss. The extreme itching could be an indication of damage to your scalp. We would consult with the dermatologist before continuing.

Subj: Missing a day?
Date: 12/16/2007
Hi, I’ve been using rogain for about two weeks but I sometimes will miss a day then continue it the next day, will missing applications effect my results a great deal or is it ok to miss? Thank you,

Justin

AskDocWeb: Missing an application once in a while will affect your results, but not enough to be concerned.

Subj: Damage caused by minoxidil
Date: 12/18/2007
I used a 5% minoxydil blend produced by a brand called Biomedic for three months and then I started to experience impotence. Very few websites say that this is even a possible side effect. I’ve stopped taking it now and have been off it for a month, but I still haven’t returned to normal. Is it possible that the damage is permanent?

Tim

AskDocWeb: We have not heard of any permanent damage caused by minoxidil.

Subj: No miracle
Date: 12/18/2007
I am 42 and heard from expert there is no miracle for hair loss the only guarantee result is transplantation. I have used minoxidil for a month and noticed more hair loss.

Nacera

Subj: Lower back cramping
Date: 12/19/2007
I’ve been using this product for 2 months and have started having lower back cramping pressure that I used to have when I had my period. And my breasts have started getting tender. These symptoms seem to appear if I missed a dose and at other times as well.

Subj: Decrease in vision
Date: 12/20/2007
I have been using Mindoxil for a year now. And now I have noticed a decrease in my vision. Doctors can’t explain what is wrong. If I stop taking Mindoxil, then how much time does it take before the effects wear out?

Aruniima

AskDocWeb: You seem to be assuming that the decrease in vision is due to the drug when it may have an unrelated cause. We suggest you visit an ophthalmologist for an eye exam to determine what happened.

Subj: 2 questions
Date: 12/21/2007
Hi, I’m 30 yr. female I noticed hair loss on my vertex for 3 years, I started using minoxidil 5% 3 month ago. I have 2 questions: 1/does it work after 3 years of hair loss. 2/i burning & itchy scalp after I started the meds does it help if used once/day or every other day? Is it still going to work? Or should shift to minoxidil 2% thanks,

S.A

AskDocWeb: According to the FDA, “Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials…” You can try using it every other day to see if that reduces the itching but it won’t be as effective.

Subj: Minoxidil side effects
Date: 12/30/2007
I have being used minoxidil for almost 4 month and I started to have some side effects like: chest pain, blurred vision or other changes in vision, decrease in sexual ability or desire*, fast or irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing, fainting, lightheadedness, flushing, rapid weight gain, headache, numbness or tingling of hands, feet, or face swelling of face, hands, feet, or lower legs but minoxidil works for me and my hair is growing. What can I do? I can used other medications, sorry about my English.

Alessio

AskDocWeb: By the side affects listed it sounds like you should visit your doctor as soon as possible. Please read more about vision problems here.

Subj: Selections of Minoxidil
Date: 12/31/2007
I am thinking of using minoxidil for my hair loss, but after reading and doing some research on my own, I realized that there are brand (Rogaine) and generic minoxidil options out there. What are the differences between them and what is the best one to use? Thanks.

Leon

AskDocWeb: By definition the generics are supposed to be just as effective as the big name brands so it comes down to price and what percentage of minoxidil the product contains. Typically minoxidil is sold in either 2% or 5% concentrations.

Subj: Question
Date: 1/5/2008
Does this hair growth from Minoxidil reduce the life span of hair follicles? If I one stops using the product, does that mean that the hair loss (perhaps total hair loss) would ultimately come sooner than if it hadn’t been used?

J

AskDocWeb: No, there is no evidence that Minoxidil shortens the overall life span of hair follicles.

Subj: Hair falling again
Date: 1/12/2008
Hi, I have used mintop for 2 months and I observed hair regrowth. But after 1 month I stopped applying it I am observing lot of hair falling again. What I have to do now..?

Reddy

AskDocWeb: That is what happens when a hair loss product is discontinued, the hair starts falling out again. If you want to keep the benefits (your hair) you have to continue using the product.

Subj: Pain in my left arm and hand
Date: 1/12/2008
I have had numbness tingling and slight pain in my left arm and hand since taking minoxidil. This problem occurs normally at night when I’m lying down. Is this side effect a sign that minoxidil is causing me a long term health concern or is this just an acute symptom? Do you have any ideas that could improve this uncomfortable pain in my arm?

Jason

AskDocWeb: Please see your physician about the pain in your left arm. That can signal a serious problem that requires immediate medical attention.

Subj: Triamcinolone topical solution
Date: 1/14/2008
Triamcinolone topical solution was given to me by my dermatologists; my condition isn’t bad at all, but there is a small amount of traction alepecia in the front of my hair line (of which it seems I only notice based on friends and colleagues) from constant pulling. Is the above hormone as effective as minoxidil? Does Triamcinolone work?

Kdchelle

AskDocWeb: Triamcinolone does work but it isn’t a hormone. It is a steroid used to treat inflammation. In general it is not as effective as minoxidil for hair loss but in some specific cases it may be more effective. It does come with some serious cautions such as weakening the immune system. Those using Triamcinolone are warned against getting a live vaccine injection until after completion of treatment. If you have a fungal infection anywhere on your body while using this product, the fungus growth will accelerate.

Subj: Scalp very dry and flaky
Date: 1/16/2008
I have started using Minoxidil and my scalp does go very dry and flaky and it can be seen through my hair, which is unsightly. Is there anything I can apply to my scalp after putting on Minoxidil to moisturize it?

Mick

AskDocWeb: You can try a moisturizing shampoo.

Subj: Minoxidil with Betamethasone Valerate?
Date: 1/18/2008
Hello, Is it safe to use Minoxidil and Betamethasone Valerate ointment USP 0.1% together? The ointment was prescribed, and Minoxidil was purchased over the counter. Thanks,

Concern

AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any direct interactions recorded for those two drugs but our interaction checker may not include every interaction that is known. Betamethasone Valerate is a corticosteroid used to reduce itching, redness, and swelling associated with many skin conditions. Minoxidil has been known to irritate the skin so you may want to clear up your skin condition before using it. Always check with your doctor to see if a medication will be safe and effective for you.

Subj: Dandruff?
Date: 1/21/2008
Hi I want to know whether minoxidil causes dandruff as I’m using it from one month and I have a lot of itching after the treatment being started.

Varun

AskDocWeb: Yes, scalp flaking is the most commonly reported side effect of minoxidil.

Subj: Mintop
Date: 1/26/2008
Hello sir I was using mintop 2% from 4 months but not effect seen than I’m using mintop 5% from 15 days after apply the solution on scalp hair become dry. My hair is so thin. Is 5% effective and how many days I will get good result. Does smoking effect the hair loss?

Vishal

AskDocWeb: There is evidence that smoking contracts the capillaries which reduces blood flow to the hair follicles. According to the Food and Drug Administration in the USA, the regrowth of hair caused by minoxidil (Mintop) has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
