Subj: Minoxidil adverse reaction
Date: 12/22/2008
A decade ago (aged approx 35) I used 5% minoxidil topically for 9 months for baldness without noticing any affect. It didn’t grow hair that I could definitely see. In time I began to notice an occasional palpitation of short duration. Not knowing if there was any direct relation to the topical use of minoxidil, I persisted for another month until I became a little worried that these infrequent palpitations were a little more persistent, and appeared to occur after applying minoxidil. I went off minoxidil entirely for several weeks and the palpitations subsided. Tried another minoxidil dose and soon had a severe palpitation session. There was no doubt in my mind of the correlation now! I immediately discontinued applying minoxidil. But within a very short time, the palpations became much worse. Within the following twelve months I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Before minoxidil I never had any heart issue. Although no longer applying minoxidil, my weight went from 87 to 95 kg and I had intermittent stomach cramps — more adverse reactions. Even though I had quickly discovered that minoxidil was affecting me, it was too late.
The medical professionals take a step back whenever I mentioned my experience with minoxidil — they don’t want to know! I put this severe adverse reaction down to three causes that interacted with each other:
(I) Mother had intermittent atrial fibrillation (which was unfortunately diagnosed only after I already had discontinued minoxidil)
(ii) I react to a number of pharmaceuticals (also discovered only after the minoxidil incident)
(iii) the use of topical minoxidil itself.
My personal conclusion: If there is any incidence of family members with heart troubles (even in old age), and/or you may be sensitive to pharmaceuticals, I would stay clear of minoxidil. If you are having heart palpitations, stop immediately. Until surgery to correct the atrial fibrillation, life was unbearable. Such an adverse reaction appears rare, but damage was done silently before I became aware of it . This has been my experience and you’ll have to evaluate your own situation. Search for “A Case of Acute Myocardial Infarction Associated with Topical Use of Minoxidil for Treatment of Baldness” for a medically researched case of a minoxidil adverse reaction.

Travis
AskDocWeb: We have not seen any reports of reproductive problems from those using the Rogaine Foam. Good luck.

Hello, I am 21 years old girl. I am having very thin hair and a bald at front. I consult doctor they suggested me minoxidil topical 5% and skin vit. I want to know shall I continue with this medicianes or I should consult another doctor?

Subj: Mintop 2%
Date: 1/13/2009
Hello, I am 26 yrs old female with very thin but normal hair from start. But recently I have started noticing further thinning of my hair and have lost substantial amount of volume and have this small patch where you can just make out that have no hair on top… I have been recommended Mintop but after going through some article I am not sure if I can use the product without affecting my facial hair growth, which off course I do not want. Is it safe to use Mintop 2% or not? I will appreciate your advice to this matter.
Sonali
AskDocWeb: As long as you avoid getting it on your face, typically there isn’t any problem with unwanted facial hair but it is one of the possible side effects. For safety sake, please read about the possible side effects of Minoxidil, that is the active ingredient in Mintop.
Subj: Facing hair fall
Date: 1/16/2009
Hi. I’m Simran from India I’m gonna start using minoxin 2 percent but I’m afraid now after reading riskes of treatment. Actually I’m facing hair fall I used chemicals to keep my hair straight for last 4 years and also I did dieting two months ago and loss 10 kgz in a month. I was on active diet, now I don’t know if my hair falling due to chemical usage or due to dieting. Now the condition is whenever I comb my hair 20 to 25 hair fall on every comb in a day and if I wash my hair 60 to 70 hair fall. I’m too much depressed and I can’t decide weather I start use minoxin or I shud wait and keep my diet healthy. Plz help me,
Simran
AskDocWeb: If Minoxin is a local brand name for Minoxidil then there is no problem with using it while maintaining a healthy diet at the same time. The problem of hair fall caused by those chemicals to straighten your hair will stop when you stop using them.
Subj: Mintops oil
Date: 1/17/2009
Hi, I’m a 24 year old guy. My hair started falling when I was 19 year old. Since then I didn’t took any tablets or never gone to a doctor. But know my hair started falling alot and almost I lost half of my hair in my scalp. I haven’t used any oil too. One of friend has suggested me to use Mentops oil. Is a good one for me to use, will I get any side effects if I use this oil.
Kishore
AskDocWeb: Some side effects have been reported, mostly just rash, irritation, and most often, dandruff. We do not recommend Mintop long-term because it has not been shown to be effective beyond 48 weeks.
Subj: Provillus and Minoxodil
Date: 1/18/2009
I am researching Provillus and Minoxodil to address my receding hairline and thinning towards the front of my hair. I was ready go ahead with both but have read some comments that these products really only work for balding on the crown (which is not an issue for me). Is this true or will they have equal chance of working for me as well?
Canuck
AskDocWeb: A few people have reported success with both products on the front hair line but not enough for us to recommend either product for that use. Of course if you want to find out if you are one of the lucky few, it won’t hurt anything but your bank account.
Subj: Rogaine

Subj: Minoxidil on the face
Date: 1/21/2009
Is there a treatment for the wrong applied minoxidil on the face? How can I get rid of hair if it happens? Regards
Ebrahem
AskDocWeb: Just stop using it and the hair that it caused to grow will go away although it may take a few months.
Subj: Shaving the scalp
Date: 1/26/2009
Hi, I m 22yr old , I have hair loss for over two years now. I wasted a decent sum (close to 20k) at Kaya clinc, Dr health and now at Richfeel but nothing seem to help, those Doc always blamed it on my diet (green tea, loads of almonds, flax seeds is what most of them asked me to include in my diet) but I’m a 100% veg n those were already part of my diet. So it just added to my depression that they failed to help. Anyway I met a demortologist the other day for another skin condition and I also told him about my hair. He recommended that pilogro 5% 1 ml every night and then triclenz shampoo twice a week my hair roots out completely and growing thin I have kept it really long almost 7 inches to check my progress, oiling was done twice a week using those medicated one’s which those docs gave. So my question is do I cut my hair / shave it off (to ease my application of the lotion) n then start using the above medicine or is there a recomended length coz one of the above Q you say that clean shave shouldnt be done.
Peter
AskDocWeb: Our concern about shaving the scalp is that the newly shaved areas are more sensitive and easily irritated. The newly shaved scalp may also allow too much of the drug to be absorbed into the skin.
Please note that there are health concerns about using flax seed and Green Tea.
Subj: Allergic reaction
Date: 1/27/2009
I seem to be having an allergic reaction to something. I have itchy ears and skin around eyes, with a small rash. I have been using Rogaine for nearly two months with no side effects. But only in the last few days have had these symptoms. To acertain if it is the Rogaine solution I have stopped. Its been over a day since last applying, but symptoms still there. I have purchased antihistimine from pharmacy. Any advice appreciated.
John
AskDocWeb: Since the symptoms are still there, you may have to consult with an allergist in order to find the cause.
