Subj: PCOS and hair loss
Date: 10/22/2004
I am a 39 year old woman in great health except for the symptoms associated with polysystic ovarian syndrome which includes increased facial hair and male/female pattern hair loss. My question is whether this type of minoxidil treatment has been used and successful in patients with a pcos history and hairloss.
Yvonne
AskDocWeb: Yes, but you may have to apply it twice a day for four months before you start seeing results. It sounds like you might want to have your thyroid checked. A positive progesterone withdrawal test establishes the presence of estrogen. PCOS in its complete form associates polycystic ovaries, amenorrhea, hirsuitism (hypothyroidism) and obesity. Weight reduction and the use of birth control may also help with this problem.
Subj: 12.5% Minoxidil
Date: 10/22/2004
The belgravia centre in the UK are now doing a 12.5% Minoxidil. I have not see any comments about this on your website. Is this ok? They say they are the only people who do this strength. What is the story with this offer?
Andy
AskDocWeb: It seems that the title “trichologist” is not officially recognized by mainstream science. Anyone can call himself (or herself) a trichologist and practice hair care. Both the 2% and 5% solutions have side effects. We would expect to see a lot more problems with a stronger solution.
Subj: Hair loss products

Rogaine claims that their product only works on the vertex(top of the scalp). Does your studies find it works on the front as well? I am looking to try a combined treatment of Rogaine with Procerin or Advecia. I am afraid of the possible side effects of Propecia! Thanks,
Ed
AskDocWeb: In about 30% of people that use Minoxidil, it will grow hair on ears, forehead and nose. Be very careful not to get the minoxidil anywhere you do not want more hair to grow.
Subj: Minoxidil and pregnancy
Date: 10/31/2004
If I’m trying to get pregnant should I stop taking Minoxidil? Has there been any tests done that show there could be any side effects to a fetus? Would 2% be less risky than 5%?
A
AskDocWeb: Yes, the 2% solution has less risk of side effects than the 5%. Topical Minoxidil solution has not been studied in pregnant women. Before using this medicine, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you plan on becoming pregnant.
Subj: Scalpmed or Minoxidil
Date: 11/2/2005
Any differences between Scalpmed and Minoxidil 5% in terms of result and side effects?
ELIAS
AskDocWeb: There has been no feedback about Scalpmed yet but to us it looks like a scam. Let us know what you think.
Subj: Minoxidil
Date: 11/16/2005
I have used Minoxidil for about 4 months now and have hair growing in thinly in the affected area which is the crown of my head. It is not at all the same thickness as the rest of my hair but definitely has filled in. I am African American also.

Subj: Rogaine scalp flaking
Date: 11/26/2005
I used Rogaine but got pretty bad scalp flaking: is there any shampoo that I can use to stop the flaking? Thanks,
PB
AskDocWeb: Several hair loss products cause dandruff type flaking, it’s not just Rogaine. It may take 2 to 3 weeks to see results. We are still looking for a shampoo that we can recommend for your condition. Let us know if you find one that works.
Subj: Applying while wet
Date: 12/4/2005
Recently turned 53, hair has been falling out for years and now is rapidly showing its effects. I went for a physical and did not mention minoxidil to doctor. Called back a few days later and was told my rapid pulse and irregular heartbeat exhibited in the office was probably not caused by the 5% solution. Never had this problem before and have been using approximately one month before visit to doctor. Also, nothing mentioned on label about applying while wet which I do. Could this be a cause for side effects? What do you think?
Jan
AskDocWeb: A side effect of Minoxidil is a fast and irregular heart rate. This is a sign that you are using too much minoxidil or too much is being absorbed into your body, which is what happens when you apply it while your scalp is wet. According to the manufacturer your hair and scalp must be completely dry before using this medication.
Subj: Minoxidil with simvastatin drugs?
Date: 12/14/2005
Is there any information on minoxidil’s interaction with simvastatin drugs?
Barbara
AskDocWeb: Sorry, we found nothing about Minoxidil interacting with those drugs.
Subj: Minoxidil
Date: 12/16/2005
I used minoxidil 9 months, and found good result. Should I stop or continue using for ever? Thanks
Faten
AskDocWeb: If you stop using it, you loose the benefits and within a year your scalp will be the same as if you had never used it. This is the same problem with all hair loss products, non of them are permanent.
Subj: Hair loss and hormones
Date: 1/1/2006
Both my sons age 17 1/2 and 19 are loosing their hair. Could it be from all the hormones in the meat that we eat today? Can change of diet help keep their hair longer and if so what should they eat? Thanks,
Worried mom
AskDocWeb: No, it isn’t from the meat. A good diet helps everything including the hair, but if it is in their genes, it’s going to happen anyway.
Subj: Shedding
Date: 1/6/2006
Currently I am in my late 20s and have been on propecia and minoxidil 5% for about 1 month. Initially, I felt my hair condition improve but after few weeks, my hair seem to drop off more. Is it the shedding phase as stated in this website? How long will the shedding last and is it a bad sign? I have family history of hair loss. Have any idea how well propecia and minoxidil work together? Pls advise. Thank
Gana
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is the shedding phase, and not a bad sign unless it lasts for 4-5 weeks, then we would suggest discontinuing the product.
Subj: Minoxidil and hair washing
Date: 1/8/2006
My brother used rogaine for a few years, and the product seemed to work initially, but stopped working after two years of application. After that, he just noticed his oily scalp had a lot of build up and was itchy. He stopped using the product, but now my dermatologist dianognosed me with experiencing early stages of female pattern baldness. He told me to use 2% minoxidil solution, but what I want to know is does this product work well on oily scalps at all? Will I experience added build up on my scalp as well? I wash my hair every other day, and I do not want to wash my hair every day in order to use this product.
Myra
AskDocWeb: In that case you will have a problem with Minoxidil. The instructions say that you may have to use the product twice a day in order to see results. That seems to be a lot of work for a one in five chance that you will regrow some hair.
Subj: Sudden hair loss
Date: 1/12/2006
Hi, I have a question for you. My dad has started taking Minoxodil about a month ago, and has experienced sudden hair loss over his already thinning head. Is this normal? This is the only side effect he has had.
Natasha
AskDocWeb: Yes this happens to many, it’s called the shedding phase. We are collecting data on how long it lasts both when the product is continued and when it is discontinued. Feel free to share your experience here to help others with this problem.
Subj: Rogaine and Hairline
Date: 2/3/2006
Is it true that Rogaine will not help the front of your hairline? My loss is the first inch and a half in both corners of the front. Thanks,
Michael
AskDocWeb: It states right on the Rogaine box that it may not work for a receding hairline.
Subj: Mintop 5%
Date: 2/7/2006
Since I’ve been advised by my doctor to take this mintop 5%. This above valuable information does a lot on my confidence of my hair growth. Thanks,
Arun
Subj: Minoxidil side effects
Date: 2/12/2006
Hello, I am 27 years old. Used tropical minoxidil(5%) for about 6 months. I stopped the treatment last week after noticing the following side effects; reduced sexual desire, numbness in hands and legs. How long will it take to come out of this side effects?
Sam
AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of numbness in anyone’s hands and legs before. We would give it a month to see improvement and if none, then see a neurologist.
Subj: Scalpmed
Date: 3/1/2006
What about taking a natural hair growth pill and minoxidil together. Would that grow more hair? What about scalpmed? What if I just use minoxidil every other day for a long time. Will It still work?
What about using a natural no side effect hair growth pill and minoxidil together for the next 5 to 8 years, until Hair cloning is available?
Steve
AskDocWeb: Combining Minoxidil with a hair growth product is just fine. The active ingredient in Scalpmed seems to be Minoxidil so using it with Minoxidil would be redundant, it isn’t one of the recommended products. Propecia or Procerin are the top hair loss products used by our readers.
Subj: Really bad situation
Date: 3/8/2006

AskDocWeb: The hair should go away after discontinuing use but it may take a few weeks.
Subj: Quitting Minoxidil
Date: 3/9/2006
How long does minoxidil take to get out of your system? Thank You,
Annette
AskDocWeb: We would estimate about 14 days.
Subj: 5% minoxidil with estrogen?
Date: 3/22/2006
I was recently diagnosed with female pattern balding and put on 5% solution of minoxidil. I am also on a hormone replacement drug for menopause. 0.625mg Conjugated Estrogens. Is this o.k.?
Linda
AskDocWeb: Conjugated Estrogens are known to cause scalp hair loss and it seems to be common to prescribe another drug to counter the side effects.
Subj: Afraid
Date: 3/27/2006
I have been using rogaine for about 10 years and happy with results. Just recently in the last 3 months I have been losing hair and my scalp is very uncomfortable, pain, burning, but no apparent irritation on my scalp. Afraid to continue but also very afraid to stop, not sure if it is making my hair fall out now!
Siobhan
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have developed a tolerance to it and when that happens it isn’t going to work for you anymore.
Subj: Loosing vast amounts of hair
Date: 3/28/2006
I’m loosing vast amounts of hair everyday since years already, but my hair looks just the same to me. Would it still make sense to take something, just in case.
Gabriel
AskDocWeb: Loosing some hair every day is normal and you don’t need anything for that but, if you think serious hair loss is beginning then the earlier you catch it the better the results.
Subj: Question about Procerin
Date: 4/9/2006
I’m 20, losing hair since I was 18, tried Rogaine, not helping yet, now trying procerin 1st day hope it works…QUESTION dose Procerin have a shedding phase?
Ruben
AskDocWeb: In our study about one in twenty experienced shedding. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
