Subj: Sink is full of hair
Date: 1/28/2009
Hi I have been using regaine for 4 months now and my hair have become much thicker. I have long hair so I can see the new small hair that have grown. However the last two days I am losing about 30 hair at each use, twice a day! The sink is full of hair ALL OF WHICH ARE NEW-SMALL. Please help I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to lose all the progress that I made.

John

AskDocWeb: First thing is not to panic, that only results in stress which increases the hair loss. Keep in mind that the amount of hair you lose each day goes up and down over time. The hair follicles in your scalp alternate through shedding phases and growth phases. This is something you are not likely to notice until you start paying attention. Now that you are aware of it you can look forward to getting back into the next growth phase. We wouldn’t be concerned unless the number of hairs lost each day went over 150 or it lasted more than a few weeks.

Subj: Eyebrow irritation
Date: 2/5/2009
Hello, I used Minoxidil for about a month, but not for hair it was for eyebrow growth. I just had small patches due to over plucking. I put too much Minoxidil and I have irrated, dry skin around my eyebrows. I would really like to know when this chemical will leave my system, and if there is anything I can put on them in the meantime to reduce inflammation. Thank you very much for your help.

Jessica

AskDocWeb: We estimate that it may take about 14 days to completely leave your system. You local pharmacist can recommend an over-the-counter product to help with the inflammation.

Subj: Shedding really bad
Date: 2/5/2009
I’ve been using 4% Minoxidil for 6 weeks now and my hair has been shedding from the start of use and is still sheddin 6 weeks later, really quite bad and I’m starting to get receeding lines! I’ve also noticed I getting a burning sensation on the top of my head. Is this normal? Would you reccommend stopping using the Minoxidil? What would be the side effects of stopping using it and would it do more harm than good?

Sue

AskDocWeb: Since it sounds like the product is not working and the burning sensation has become a concern, we suggest you consult with a dermatologist. Sometimes hair loss can indicate a thyroid or other health problem.

Subj: Temporarily or for years?
Date: 2/9/2009
I am Pranav aged 26 unmarried, is the usage of minoxidil solution either temporarily or continiously for years cause any side effects on reproductive system, or on sexual desire?

pranav

AskDocWeb: It appears to a temporary solution. According to the FDA’s, Drug Facts from the FDA “Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men.”

Subj: I’m in trouble
Date: 2/9/2009
Hi, I am 25 year old male. My problem is that the quantity of hair on my scalp is ok but there is a difference between textures of hair on different places of my scalp. I do have good quality hair on sides of head but on the top of head quality is very poor they are like dead hair. I apply oils, creams, conditioners but the hair on the top side does not absorb any thing so they remain dry and dead. My doctor prescribed me Minokem 5% (Minoxidil + Tretinoin + Azelaic Acid) with vitamins. I am using this solution for last 2 months. Now I have been encountering High B.P, Dizzines, Weakness and darkness in Eyes, Slight headache. Is this due to minokem? I also have very hairy body. Will this solution increase body hair? My hormones are balanced. Also is there any treatment to reduce unwanted hair in body. Plz tell me should I continue with this soln. or not. As u stated that discontinuing the use of this minoxidil will result in to same condition of baldness. Is there any other method for hair treatment…plzzzzzzzz advice. I’m in trouble.

Rajesh

AskDocWeb: Yes there are other products for hair treatment but we suggest you follow your doctor’s instructions. Any side effects should be reported to your doctor so that your treatment can be adjusted over time. The treatments for hair loss take several months, sometimes up to a year before you see results. Give it time to work.

Subj: Weak erections
Date: 2/11/2009
I have been using mintop 5% for 2 years and I had good results but now sometimes I suffer from weak erections. Is this because of the drug.

Saqib

AskDocWeb: According to the Mayo Clinic a decrease in sexual ability may occur if too much is absorbed through the skin.

Subj: NO ONE EVER TOLD ME
Date: 2/19/2009
My heart doctor gave me MINOXIDIL 10 tablets for malignant hypertension last spring, by summer I noticed I was growing some facial hair, by September I was so distraut that I had tests run at my gynocoloists to find out if my estrogene was depleted, I am 64. Test was normal. I became recluse after that, would not go out in the daylight for fear of a mushtache, goatee, nose hair, hair around my eyes, hair from eyebrows to hair line, hair beside my now, hair on legs that at this age I no longer had and hair under arms that at this age I no longer had was growning dark and long. Been taking MINOXIDIL twice a day for about a year now and NO ONE EVER TOLD ME THAT MINOXIDIL IS USED FOR GROWING HAIR BACK ON BALD HEADED MEN until two days ago when I was at my family doctor for a checkup and he asked to look at my pill bottles. You doctors need to tell a patient when you prescribe MINOXIDIL for high blood pressure that it can cause facial hair growth. Now when I think about how many things I missed caused I would not go outside my house in the daylight for fear of people seeing this hair on my face, it makes me feel sick. I should have been told.

Subj: Losing hairs
Date: 2/21/2009
Hi, I am 25, I am losing hairs, will it be helpfull to grow my hair again by minoxidil? Also suggest remedies for dandruf & itching.

Prakash

AskDocWeb: Minoxidil is likely to work for a while but we think it is also likely that a year later you will be looking for something else. As for do-it-yourself or home remedies for dandruff there are a number of things you can try. Take a look at home remedies for dandruff.

Subj: Could pregnancy be harmed?
Date: 2/26/2009
My husband uses the generic brand of Rogaine and we are currently trying to get pregnant. Can this product effect our conceiving and once pregnant if I was in contact w/ the solution could the pregnancy be harmed? Thank you for your help.

Nikki

AskDocWeb: Topical minoxidil has not been studied in pregnant women. However, some studies in animals have shown that Rogaine, when given by mouth, causes problems during pregnancy, although the studies have not shown that Rogaine causes birth defects.

Subj: Sudden cessation of Rogaine after 10 years
Date: 2/27/2009
I am 50 and have been using Rogaine 5% for over 10 years with no apparent benefit (but who knows, it might have been worse, right!). Over that period I have generally had low blood pressure, sometimes a very low resting heart rate (sub 40bpm) and noticeable peripheral neuropathy/paresthesia at rest. In the past two months I stopped using Rogaine entirely – I forgot it whilst packing for an extended assignment abroad and figured this time I could just do without. Coincidentally, at a routine medical in the last few days I have been diagnosed with persistent atrial fibrillation. Remains to be seen whether this is local or has an underlying cause. I wonder whether extended use of Rogaine induced some of my symptoms – and, particularly, whether sudden cessation of use could have switched LAF from paroxysmal to persistent?

Subj: Itchy scalp
Date: 3/1/2009
I tried 5 % minoxidil and within 2 hours later, I felt like I was having a niacin flush on my face and scalp. I felt my pulse in my scalp. Before using minox, my scalp was very itchy. Could this “itchy scalp” symptom be why I cannot tolerate minoxidil? Should I seek medical attention first for this? Thanks

Mark

AskDocWeb: If the itching, redness, or burning is severe, wash the medicine off and check with your doctor before using it again.

Subj: Minoxidil itching
Date: 3/5/2009
I have started using Minoxidil for the last two months. First month I used 2% then graduated to 5% in the next month, towards the end of the next month, the scalp started itching. There is no redness. I stopped for a couple of days and was ok. Then I started Minoxidil again and the itching started again but bearable, should I stop or continue?

Jacob

AskDocWeb: Some people can put up with the itching but others say it is too much. Only you can decide if the itching is bad enough to discontinue or not.

Subj: Libido problems
Date: 3/5/2009
I, too, had libido problems throughout my four weeks on a 5% Minoxidil regiment. I’m 51, and in excellent health, and never had any past problems like this at all. Suspecting the Minoxidil, I was gratified to find your helpful information on this site. I immediately stopped using it, and that very night I woke up after about three hours of sleep with the firmest hard-on I’ve had in weeks, and that was repeated again in the morning. Feels great to be back to normal. I’m thinking of switching to the 2% solution. Can I dilute my 5% solution with rubbing alcohol or something else to reduce its strength? I hate to throw out the bottles I have. If the 2% solution doesn’t work, I’ll give up on Minoxidil altogether. Having to choose between hair and orgasms, I’d much rather be bald and happy!

Subj: Affect on healthy hair
Date: 3/9/2009
I would like to know that if minoxidal has any (good/bad) affect/effect on the existing healthy hair.

vee007

AskDocWeb: Minoxidil may not affect healthy hair but if it is overused or not used in the proper quantities, hair may become stressed, brittle, and break easily. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
