Subj: Fluid retention
Date: 6/1/2009
I am a 53 year old female. Uses Minoxidil 2% but I have to be careful. I have got 2 fluid retentions in my forehead. A doctor said to me it is an unusual side effect. Yesterday I found a fluid retention in my back and had to see the doctor today. May not use Minoxidil now for three months. I am so depressed. I have very good help of Minoxidil. Is that right? Is fluid retention an uncommon side effect?

Marie

AskDocWeb: Fluid retention is not listed in our database as a side effect of minoxidil but this database may not cover all possible side effects. It may be a rare side effect.

Subj: Rogaine for woman?
Date: 6/2/2009
My husband is experiencing thinning temples, I got him Rogaine for woman since its for the front area. He is 24 years old. Is this the best way to help him out? Is it okay if he uses rogaine for woman?

Alex

AskDocWeb: Rogaine for women is the 2% strength solution. Rogaine for men comes in a stronger 5% solution. Most men have better results with the stronger solution.

Subj: Pain in the groin
Date: 6/4/2009
Sir, I have been using Mintop 10% for almost 2 months now. Two weeks back I started experiencing pain in the groin region. I am not using it too much so I don’ think it’s a case of an overdose, like I read in earlier posts. I consulted a general surgeon and he said it might be a case of lower urinary tract infection and I took two courses of Norflox BD for five days along with Citrate alkasol solution. It did not help. Could it be some other side effect of Mintop or maybe my body is reacting to the usual dosage only? Please advise. Kind regards,

Ankit

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of groin pain from using the usual dosage. It sounds like you need to follow up with your doctor because there are other possible causes of pain in the groin area.

Subj: Hair loss at 19
Date: 6/4/2009
Hi, I have a few questions to ask before I start Minoxidil. Firstly as I am a girl is it only possible to use 2%? If this doesn’t work would you recommend using a higher dosage? Secondly do you know whether 4% minoxidil combined with Medroxyprogesterone works better than Minoxidil on the NHS? Lastly when you initially begin usage I understand you get increased hair loss? How bad are we talking and how long does this last for? I’m 19 and devastated at my hair thinning I really need so help as am desperate.

Lucy

AskDocWeb: The 2% minoxidil formula is sold specifically for women and is called Rogaine for Women. The initial shedding does not happen with everyone but it is a possibility. Because you have hair loss at 19 we suggest you consult with a dermatologist about this problem or at least get a complete medical physical to rule out other health issues that may need attention.

Subj: Bald patches appearing
Date: 6/5/2009
Hi all, Firstly great site. Thanks for all the info. I am a 26 yr woman experiencing hair thinning since last 5 years. Initially I ignored the problem as temporary but I have recently noticed bald patches appearing. I have started minoxidil since last 1 month. The thing is I want to apply the solution to my whole scalp but find it rather difficult to do so in just 1 ml. Is there any non-reactive base(preferably non- greasy) I can use to apply the solution? What about water? Will diluting minoxidil with water make it useless? Thanks,

DJ

AskDocWeb: If there is a non-reactive base we have yet to hear about it. It may be obvious but we would focus application first on the bald spots and then work outward from there. Diluting minoxidil with water will decrease the effectiveness of the product. In fact, the instructions say to apply it when your scalp and hair are both dry.

Subj: Blurring vision

Interesting article. I’m feeling a blurring on my eyes that I think is caused for the Rogaine.

Subj: Not observing any result
Date: 6/10/2009
I have been using Minoxy usp 10% solution for 3-4 weeks. Each day twice 1ml in Morning and Evening. But, I am not observing any good result. Please suggest.

Rajmohan

AskDocWeb: As with any product for hair loss that you might try, don’t expect to see any results until 3 to 6 months after you start using it.

Subj: Sexual health?
Date: 6/10/2009
Does minoxidil causes any problem related with sexual health.

Sheraz

AskDocWeb: Not as long as you use it according to the directions. Applying it too frequently to too much at a time may result in an overdose, which could them lead to sexual health problems.

Subj: Minoxidil 15%
Date: 6/15/2009
I’m 47 year old male and have been using Minoxidil 15% for about 2 months now. Just wondering if it will have any negative side affects on my sexual drive? Does Minoxidil have any adverse affects in general regarding sexual well being?

Neil

AskDocWeb: The typical dosage strength of Minoxidil for men is 5% and that is what is discussed here. The 15% strength solution is experimental and side effects of that dosage are still being explored. According to the Mayo Clinic, an overdose of the 5% solution has caused a decrease in sexual ability or desire.

Subj: Steroid injections?
Date: 6/14/2009
I have been diagnosed with alopecia areata. I am currently getting steroid injections. Can I use minoxidil along with the steroid injections? Please help,

Pam

AskDocWeb: We know that others are using that combination but you would have to check with your doctor to find out if it would be safe for you to do that.

Date: 6/18/2009
I am 22. I used minoxidil for four months. I felt my sex desire totally inhibited, to avoid this I discontinued it but hair fall has started now. What should I do, help me.

Amit

AskDocWeb: It seems like a good time to start looking at other products for hair fall. There is a whole list here.

Subj: After 48 weeks
Date: 6/18/2009
I’m 23 and have been using minoxidil for about 6 months with good results, and no side effects. What I would like to know is that whether the regrown hair fall out after 48 weeks or the regrowth stops after 48 weeks, the regrown ones staying there? Also how long should we leave it to dry, if planning to take a shower after applying? Regards,

john

AskDocWeb: We are relying on what the FDA says about minoxidil and that is, “Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men.” (source file is a PDF) The length of time that it takes to dry depends on the humidity of the air around you and the amount of hair you have, somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes.

Subj: Increased hair fall
Date: 6/22/2009
I am using mintop forte 5% for last 2 weeks suddenly I noticed increase in my hair fall, should I stop it?

Varun

AskDocWeb: This is another example of initial shedding when first starting a product for hair loss. The doesn’t happen to everyone but it does happen. For some people it is bad enough that they quit using the product. For those that continue, the increased hair loss is reported to last between 4 and 6 weeks.

Subj: Just started
Date: 6/23/2009
Hi, I just started using procerin along with 5% minoxidil as topical. Rate of hair loss is reduced in a week’s time. I’ll send more updates soon.

Zigzag

AskDocWeb: Welcome to the forum. What method are you using to determine how much hair you are losing? Are you using tape on your pillow each morning and counting hairs or what?

Subj: My hair fall doubled
Date: 6/29/2009
I am using minoxidil 5% from past 1 month and I noticed my hairfall doubled, please let me know if I stop using minoxidil will my hairfall become as before, or please advice me what to do.

Sheraz

AskDocWeb: Yes, if you stop using minoxidil the amount of hair you lose will return to what it was before you started using it.

Subj: Products in India
Date: 6/30/2009
I want to know more about mintop and its available products in India. Would u plz don’t mind in mailing me the information plzzz. I am also suffering from loss of hair and the feedback is very use full. Thank you,

Sirisha

AskDocWeb: Maybe someone who lives in India can help find this for you. What products are available in India for treating hair loss? You might refer to this problem as hair fall.

Subj: So what’s the point
Date: 7/2/2009
I used minoxidil 5% but decided to stop because on the booklet it says thar hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks. So whats the point of starting something that will stop working? I did grow a bit of small hair but I guess it would be all gone anyways in 48 weeks if I had continued with the hazzle of putting on the drops, right?

Chris

Subj: Minioxidil 2%
Date: 7/3/2009
I had heavy hair loss in my center head, MY doctor suggest me to use minokem (minioxidil 2%) and finax tablets. I am using these from last 20 days. Till I have no improvement. What to do?

Shahul

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, hair loss may continue for 2 weeks after you start using Minoxidil so that may not be working. The finax tablets (finasteride) take several months to work.

Subj: Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels
Date: 7/4/2009
Hi, Is higher thyroid (TSH) levels attributed to male-pattern-baldness? Is it alright to use minoxidil if one has marginally higher TSH levels?

Raja

AskDocWeb: Most men who have male pattern baldness have normal TSH levels until they start treatment with a drug at affects their hormones. Thyroid stimulating hormones are produced by your pituitary gland. Since you have marginally higher TSH levels, you may want to get that checked once a year. Minoxidil has not been reported to cause any problems with TSH levels. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
