Subj: Common side effects?
Date: 10/31/2009
I am a male 50 years old have been using minoxidil 5% for approx 10 months. Recently my scalp at the application site developed a rash and became very dry. Also the hair on the application site turned a lighter shade, almost as if bleached. Is this a common side effect?
Steve
AskDocWeb: The dryness and rash are fairly common but the change in hair color, while it does occur for some people, is not common.
Subj: Mintop 5% is not working
Date: 11/3/2009
Hi, I am Siddart…New Delhi. I wont take time and will summarize my stuff in points.
–I started to loose hairs in class 12th.
–I went to doctor and start using mintop — I am using Mitop 5% since past 5 years and till now, when I’m 24.
— I cudnt and never found any progress in fact the hairline kept on recceeding.
— I shaved my head a year back and continue to use mintop just to see if it works that way.
— Nope…it didn’t.
— I stay bald and god bless…looks nice like rockstar and I STILL use mitop just for HOPE.. My questions,
— Is this prolong use is gonna produce side effects?
— Should I stop it? n hopin
— Is there any other treatment out there? Answers much appreciated. Thanks and rock on!
Siddarth
AskDocWeb: Okay, so you have been trying it for five years with no progress and it is not working. That is really amazing. Most people would have given up on it a long time ago. What makes you think that it might start working some day? Looking for an alternative makes a lot more sense. Here are a couple to check out; Provillus (a supplement) and Nisim NewHair Biofactors (a shampoo that fights hair loss).
Subj: I became allergic to Minoxidil
Date: 11/3/2009
The reviews are very helpful. Rogaine worked great for me for a year. And the hair continues to grow. But I became allergic to Minoxidil. So additional follicle loss is a problem. WE women have almost NO solutions. Men are so lucky. They have no idea how we feel with almost no options.

Subj: Lower testosterone level?
Date: 11/4/2009
Does Minoxidil lower your testoterone level. Because I have used this product fore over 20 years, and my doctor say my test comes in low. Could it have anything to do with that?
D
AskDocWeb: We have seen nothing that would indicate minoxidil might lower testosterone level.
Subj: What if I apply more?
Date: 11/6/2009
Some queries abt Minidoxil. I am told by my Doc supposed to apply 1-1 ml 2 times a day, now what if I apply more than 1 ml ..any side effect, since I want to apply some minidoxil on back of my head as well, I apply 1 ml in front and Half ml in back…so will this have any adverse effect?
Ajit
AskDocWeb: Using more of the drug than directed by the instructions is a form of drug abuse. If you use too much then it could have an effect on your libido. According to the Mayo Clinic erectile dysfunction is a symptom of an overdose. That is a possibility if too much is absorbed through the skin.
Subj: Hair loss from using antibiotics
Date: 11/7/2009
I am 35 year-old female and have been using antibiotics for ~2 years and have noticed significant hair loss since starting this long-term antibiotic course. I noticed hair growth after taking a break from antibiotics for 3-4 months. Would you recommend starting Minoxidil during the end of my antibiotic treatment or waiting to see how my hair grows back after I am finished with my antibiotic treatment? Do this product tend to make one’s hair oily or greasy?
Heather
AskDocWeb: There are several reports that Minoxidil makes the hair/scalp more oily. We leave the medical advice to the experts.
Subj: Minoxidil with Nisim
Date: 11/8/2009
Can I use Minoxidil 5% Solution & Nisim Biofactors Shampoo together?
Sr
AskDocWeb: So far there is no feedback from anyone who has tried that but many men are using more than one product for hair loss, just don’t apply them at the same time. We have no idea what would happen if you mix the two products together but it’s better to be safe than sorry. A bad reaction would likely show up as scalp irritation.
Subj: Somewhat pleased
Date: 11/10/2009
Hi, I have been using DNS products, 5% Minoxidil, and rivita shampoo, it has only been a week and I am somewhat pleased. Even though I know its early to decide. I also take beta-sitosterol, and using saw palmetto extracts. I want to start using finasteride. Is this a wise choice to combine? Is it safe?
Steven
AskDocWeb: According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “Saw palmetto should not be taken with drugs that affect the levels of male sex hormones (androgens), such as finasteride (Proscar®, Propecia®) or flutamide (Eulexin®).”
Subj: Massive shedding
Date: 11/11/2009
I am a 22 year old. I’ve been using minoxidil 5% solution since last one month, earlier I even tried out some homeopathic hair treatments, but none of them helped me out. After applying minoxidil for one month religiously I’ve been noticing massive hair loss, now is that a side affect or is it a shedding phase, I’ve been also religiosly practicing “balayam” which is a yogic excersice without any side effect, but it also includes a shedding phase, now what is this shedding phase all about, does hair really grow back ater this phase is over, thnx.
Rohit
AskDocWeb: While collecting feedback about hair loss products we have noticed that an initial period of shedding is reported to occur with each product. The shedding occurs to a small percentage of users with each product but it does occur. Why this happens is unknown. It is also not known why the effect of Minoxidil varies from person to person. There is no way to know how much hair will grow back after going through a shedding phase. It depends on the cause. In most cases it will grow back if you remove the cause.
Subj: Losing hair at 15
Date: 11/13/2009
I am 15 year old and had been facing hair loss for about 6 months, I loose 50-70 strands of hair daily and my hair become visibly thin. My doctor prescribed minoxidil topical solution USP 2%, I have been using this for last ten days. How much time will it take to stop my hair fall and will it grow back lost hair?
Sakshi
AskDocWeb: According to the instructions you should tell your doctor if your hair growth does not increase after using Minoxidil for 4 months. Also, tell your doctor if your hair loss continues for more than 2 weeks. It is expected that hair loss would continue for the first 2 weeks after you start using Minoxidil.
Subj: I can’t take it anymore!
Date: 11/14/2009

Subj: Mintop 10%
Date: 11/15/2009
Hello, I use mintop 10%. Is there any problem for using this much %. I think that my face is getting darker due to the use of this mintop on my head. Is this is due to the side effect of mintop? Let me know. Is it good to move to homeo treatment after stopping mintop as I think the hair growing due to minto will not retain for longer period. Please HELP.
Sharath
AskDocWeb: Sorry, the complete list of effects of Mintop 10% is still unknown.
Subj: Alopecia areata
Date: 11/15/2009
Hi I’m 20 and have bald 2 bald spots on my head it’s alopecia areata would minoxidil grow my hair back?
Mike
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, if you have either Alopecia Areata or Telogen Effluvium then Minoxidil can do more harm than good. In some cases it may increase hair loss.
Subj: Minoxidil on the face?
Date: 11/16/2009
Hi, is the 5% Minoxidil useful for growing facial hair? and how can I apply it to the face? I heard it may damage the skin is it true?
Chris
AskDocWeb: That may well be the reason that Minoxidil is not approved for use on the face. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
