AskDocWeb: There seems to be a one in five chance that it will help with your situation. Good luck.
Subj: Minoxidil not for Alopecia Areata?
Date: 4/10/2006
I have just read you web page and it has given me great cause for concern. I have Alopecia Areata and have been prescribed Minoxidil by a very well known clinic in London, however you have said that Minoxidil should not be used if you have Alopecia Areata, could you please let me know why.
Adam
AskDocWeb: This is explained in the patient insert for Minoxidil. According to the manufacturer, if you have either Alopecia Areata or Telogen Effluvium then Minoxidil can do more harm than good, in some cases increasing hair loss.
Subj: 21 year old
Date: 4/12/2006
Hi, I am 21 years of age and although I have a full head of hair it seems a bit fine and my crown is slightly bigger then most people on the left side of my head, so I am using minoxodil with advanced hair studio with laser treatment. My hair seams a bit drowsy and soft. Is this a problem? I’m on my 3rd bottle. 3 months ish.
Dave
AskDocWeb: That soft, drowsy hair is not a problem unless you perceive it as such. You could perk up that fine hair with gel for a lot less money. Let us know how well your approach works and we’ll share it with others.
Subj: Any suggestions?
Date: 4/12/2006
I’m using minoxidil but wonder how others comb their hair before going to work. Seems I simply can’t make it look good (since I have thin hair as it is) as the area I apply it looks greasy for a couple of hours! Any suggestions?
Bruno
AskDocWeb: There are a couple of ways to handle this. The first is to get up earlier but that is difficult for many people. An easier solution would be to apply it after you get home from work.
Subj: Want a recommendation
Date: 4/21/2006
I have use minoxidil and propecia about 1 year and got great results but later on I started to have heart pain and other systemic problems caused by minoxidil my question is can you recommend an experienced, trained doctor to me about minoxidil because I could not find here in turkey. Thanks a lot for all your help,
Ismail
AskDocWeb: We are in the U.S.A. and do not have information on doctors in Turkey. The type of specialist you need to find is called a dermatologist.
Subj: Terrible things about Propecia
Date: 5/1/2006
Hey. what’s the deal with this sh*t anyway? please get back with all info. Has anyone died from this? Hey, I’d like to know why in the hell hasn’t the FDA reported all those terrible things about Propecia – young men losing erections forever, depression, etc. get off it.
Mark
AskDocWeb: Sorry Mark, we don’t send out anything from this website. Did we mention that Minoxidil is also flammable? You’ll want to avoid that kind of hothead.
Subj: Low plates
Date: 5/6/2006
I been using Rogain/Minoxidil for several years and have recently been diagnosed with low plates, is their a link, I read in the low plates website that their is. What’s your take on this. Thank you,
Jerold
AskDocWeb: We don’t have one but thanks for the tip, we’ll take a look.
Subj: Three months of Minoxidil
Date: 5/9/2006
I am using minoxidal (5%) for about three months. I have very thin and short hair on my head. Even these hairs are sometimes not visible. Is by using minoxidal 5% my hair go thick and grow with same capacity as other hairs.
Sonu
Subj:
Date: 5/20/2006
I used minoxidil 5% and after several days I am experiencing extreme irritation of the scalp and my face (forehead). I realized by using your site I should not have been taking using it on a wet head. Is it possible that if I decrease to the 2% and follow the directions that I will not have the reaction. Thank-You,
Michael
AskDocWeb: You might want to wait a couple of days first to allow the irritation to calm down. It is possible that the lower dose may work better. If the irritation returns, then your skin may be so sensitive that you may not be able to use it at all.
Subj: Rogaine and rosacea?
Date: 5/29/2006
Hi, My dermatologist told me to take rogaine 2% for adrogenic alopecia. I also have rosacea and I am taking doryx for that. I notice you say that minoxidil is a vasodilator. Aren’t I supposed to have the opposite for rosacea?
Gayle
AskDocWeb: Rosacea is usually treated with a gel, lotion or cream but these are not applied to the same area as the Rogaine. We suggest you ask your dermatologist about this.
Subj: Quit because of headaches
Date: 6/1/2006
After using for several weeks, the texture of my hair has changed from dry to oily and more fine than before. I also started getting headaches and feeling dizzy. I did not use more than what was prescribed. I quit using the product. How long will it take for my hair to go back to the texture it was before. The headache is better. Thank you
D
AskDocWeb: We would expect it to take a few weeks.
Subj: Reapplication
Date: 6/5/2006
I m 24. I used Mintop(India) for 1yr and finesteride more than 1yr but prior to all this I had a fungal infection so both treatment went hand in hand. But when the infection was hard to control I switched to Homeopath but no with result. Next a darmatologist curbed the infection but last 1 year or more. I stopped Minox so all grown my hair fell out and I started Mino again(no finesteride though due to its hormonal effect. I had a gynecomastia surgery in 2001) but also continuing ‘surfaz’ (clotrimazole IP 1%), to keep the skin problem in check. Can it be continue for long term?
Also my scalp is damn oily. I use herbal shampoo each day and ketoconazole once a week but on the next morning it keeps coming back. What may be the solution? Last but not the least can you let me know about Cu-Peptie Treatment regarding Hair loss? Thank You,
Nill
AskDocWeb: Sorry Nill, we are not familiar with most of the hair loss products made in India. The ketoconazole is known to cause oily skin and hair loss in a small number users (less than 1%).
Subj: Sperm quality?
Date: 6/18/2006
My fiancée is taking minoxidil, we are trying to get pregnant can minoxidil harm the fetus or the sperm quality in men taking topical minoxidil?
Rosetta
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer has giving no indication of any problem like that.
Subj: Receding hairline
Date: 6/23/2006
I’m 24 losing hair since 19 or 20 mostly receding hairline but some thinning overall have been using propecia for about 2 months and Rogaine for about a 1 week hair shedding has been at about the same rate or slightly less. Small amounts of side effects from propecia but Rogaine is causing some agitation to my scalp causing dandruff despite use of Nizoral. Shedding has seemed to increase due to constant itching and flaking but overall I believe scalp and hair conditions are improving as I notice less tenderness prior usage of both products which I believe is due to the reduction of DHT in my system, mostly or wholly due to the use of propecia. Side affects I have noticed from the type 2 alpha reductor (propecia) is in concern of the skin were I have noticed increased amounts of oil and acne to levels prior hair loss, i.e. 17 or 18 which in my case I am willing to live with as this only involves the occasional acne on neck back or forehead. I will provide feedback during in three months time.
John
Subj: Doctor?
Date: 6/24/2006
Hello, I am a physician, one of my patient is female kid, 2.5 years old. She is complaining of fine yellow hair in the scalp, not alopecia. This fine hair just arises 6 months ago. There is no history of such familiar condition and no history of special drug intake during pregnancy. Please inform me about the case and what is the treatment, and what about Minoxidil topically for children, is it safe or not? Best regards.
Dr
AskDocWeb: No, it is not safe. Minoxidil is NOT for use on anyone under 18 years old.
Subj: Unwanted hair growth
Date: 6/29/2006
I am very worried please help me. I am using 5% mintop from 2 months… I have developed facial hair on nose and forehead. Please help me to get rid of the hair and please advice me on how to go about it. Please reply.
Kari
AskDocWeb: You need to avoid getting the product anywhere on your skin that you don’t want hair to grow. Discontinuing the product will result in the loss of that hair, although it may take weeks.
Subj: Female hair loss
Date: 7/10/2006
I am a girl in my early 20s, one side of my family has a history in losing hair in early years, but in guys. I have been caught with that problem too, I just wonder what I can do about it. Should I start taking Rogaine? Should I ask a dermatologist first? I’ve already checked hormones, they are at normal level. Thanks,
Anne
AskDocWeb: You might start with a simple solution first. Ask your salon for a shampoo that helps stop hair loss. If that doesn’t work then ask a dermatologist to find out the cause of your hair loss and get a recommendation for something that will work for you.
Subj: Scalpmed
Date: 7/17/2006
Hey I have been seeing this commercials for Scalpmed and it really seems that they have no side effects….but I see this website has not mentioned anything about it as yet…could you tell me if it is worth a try or are there any chances of side effects because they do not have any link of side effects on their website. Thanks
Sarang
AskDocWeb: It looks a lot like a scam. Using FDA approved advertising or an FDA approved ingredient, that is not the same thing as a FDA approved product. The deceptive advertising is bad enough but there is also the question of ingredients. We have a problem when they don’t say what’s in it. That can be bad news if you are allergic to one of the ingredients.
Subj: Minoxidil for women
Date: 7/18/2006
I am a 28 year old female. My doctor recommended that I begin using Minoxidil due to thinning hair. I have read that when you stop using it, all progress will be reversed within a few months. If I am planning on having children in about 2-3 years, which would cause me to be off of it for about a year at a time, is it worth beginning?
Rebecca
AskDocWeb: No, it doesn’t sound like it would be worth starting until after the pregnancy.
Subj: Bioler water?
Date: 7/20/2006
I am more scared about my hairs. Day to day basis my hairs are falling with root. Is that once the root falls, it will not grow in that area. Previously I was not having this problem. Recently this is started. And some changes that happened are I use Bioler water to my head. And I do Gym. Is that because of these two my hairs are falling? Please give me the suggestions. Some of my friends told me to put MINTOP whether it is good.
Sunil
AskDocWeb: No idea what Bioler water is but Mintop is just another version of Minoxidil. You might check the price of Rogaine (brand name of Minoxidil). If it costs less and you want to go with that, it has about a one in five chance of helping. Provillus appears to have a better chance. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
