Subj: Side effect of minoxidil
Date: 2/8/2010
I am a woman who used minoxidil to stop hair loss. I am happy to say it worked. I am not happy that I ended up with facial hair after using topical 5% minoxidil for 7 months. It was recommended by a dermatologist to use 5%. I also have experienced more body hair. My new dermatologist recommends I stop using the minoxidil. If I do I will not only have a beard and unwanted body hair, but i”ll be bald as well! What do I do? Should I do laser hair removal? If I stop using the minoxidil will the facial hair and body hair go away. Keep in mind it made the light existing hair I had on my body grow darker and longer. How will that go away if it was my existing hair? Help!

Vicki

AskDocWeb: It is surprising that a dermatologist recommended the 5% minoxidil for a woman. The growth of unwanted body hair and facial hair is the reason why this is typically not recommended for women. Once minoxidil is discontinued the unwanted hair growth typically slows to a stop and the extra hair gradually fades away over several months time. If you want to speed this process you might want to check out a hair growth inhibitor such as Vaniqa.

Subj: Want to have children
Date: 2/9/2010
my only doubt about mintop 5% is — does mintop have any effect in producing children? do i need to stop using mintop if i want to have children? i m 28 yrs old, using mintop fur past 4 months & getting married in the next month. plz advice. thank you

Satish

AskDocWeb: The only caution we found regarding having children is that topical minoxidil solutions have not been studied in pregnant women and that you should make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant, or if you plan to become pregnant.

Subj: Other home treatments while using mintop?
Date: 2/10/2010
I’m using Mintop from past one week. I m applying it twice a day as suggested on the carton/leaflet inside. Whenever I apply it, my head is feeling heavy (of course I m comfortable and no other effects). My question is, could I continue to apply oil(mix of coconut/olive etc)and other home treatment while using mintop? Plz suggest.

Arun

AskDocWeb: We have seen no cautions about using coconut, olive, or any other kind of oil while using Mintop. Homemade treatments are a different matter. Because of the wide verity of possible ingredients, there is no way to know how these will interact with this product.

Subj: Which MINTOP is better
Date: 2/13/2010
Hi Doc, My query is regarding hairloss which i am suffering from last one year. I used to be hairy but gradually noticed falling of hair due to some unknown reason(may be dandruff). I had develop a patch on my crown where only few hair is left. Even on the crown scalp is more obvious than before and hair getting thinner. Somebody suggested me to use Mintop as its solution. Could you advise me if its safe to use it and which MINTOP(5% or 10)is better. Waiting or ur reply. cheers

Micky

AskDocWeb: The side effects of the 5% solution are well documented and safe for most men, unless you have heart disease or a problem with blood pressure. We consider the 10% solution to be experimental. Keep in mind that women are limited to the use of 2% because of the possibility of getting unwanted facial hair growth as well as the growth of body hair.

Subj: Large clinical trials
Date: 2/15/2010
“Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men.” i want to know about this sentence it means it what hair regrow with minoxidil will lost after 48 months. Does that sentence mean this or something else.i will wait for your replay thanks alot

Pason

AskDocWeb: That sentence is a quote from a U.S. government publication, (Drug Facts from the FDA). We suggest you read the original document to see it in the appropriate context. By the way, the quote states 48 weeks, not 48 months.

Subj: Tinnitus

Subj: Satisfaction rating?
Date: 2/25/2010
Could you please tell me the percentage of people who you dealt with and used Minodidil and are happy with the result?

Shak

AskDocWeb: Of those posts that have indicated how they feel about their results, about one out of five (20%) was satisfied with using Minoxidil.

Subj: Head is naked
Date: 2/26/2010
hello i am useing the 5% minoxadil solution but my apex of head is naked. I use this product from nearly 7 monthes. Plz tell me about this accurate use.

Yasir

AskDocWeb: After 7 months of use and no results, it looks like this product is not going to work for you. Are you using a shampoo that supports hair growth? If not, take a look at Nisim NewHair Biofactors.

Subj: Minoxidil tablets
Date: 2/28/2010
i have been flat ironing my hair every day for the last 6 years and my hair is so dry and doesnt seem to grow past a certain legnth anymore. Can i take minoxidil tablets to help my hair grow longer and not grow out so dry.

Beatriz

AskDocWeb: The tablet form of minoxidil is a prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure. It is not prescribed to treat hair loss. The information here is about the topical form of minoxidil sold as a liquid, cream or foam.

Subj: After minoxidil?
Date: 2/28/2010
Well, u guys r doin a damn good job, but a thing which is not clear by ur review is tht, whether u r recommending stoppin d use of minoxidil after 48 weeks(as FDA says it wont regrow more hair)or not??? But, again, stoppin it would result in shedding of all regrown hair, so wat do u say, what should b done, should one continue using it or not, after 48 weeks, Thnx in advance

Prashant

AskDocWeb: We aren’t making a recommendation one way or another until we have one that would be helpful. Right now there doesn’t seem to be a good choice.

Hi, iam getting my hair back with 5% minoxidil topical solution, have been on it for 2 years, I am getting some sideffects,? will they go away when i give it a rest for awhile. great product.

Spike
AskDocWeb: It is helpful to know what side effects you think are being caused by minoxidil. If your symptoms are caused by the minoxidil then they should go away once the product is discontinued.

Subj: Unwanted hair growth
Date: 3/5/2010
I am a 66-year old female and have been using 5% minoxidil for men for 6 weeks, following my dermatologist’s recommendation. The applications have been successful as I am growing peach fuzz where my hairline was receding. I realize that the 5% was too strong a dosage as it has caused itchy, dry scalp and eyes. However, I am also growing more dark hair above and below my lips. I am stopping the usage of minoxidil. Will the facial hairs cease growing or do I now have to treat that problem?

Phyllis
AskDocWeb: The unwanted facial hair will gradually cease growing but that can take several months. You may want to ask your doctor about a hair growth inhibitor such as Vaniqa.

Subj: Face numbness

Subj: Sperm quality or genetic problems?
Date: 3/9/2010
I am a man currently using Rogaine. In the next 2 month, my wife and I are planning to have a baby. Should I stop using Rogaine? Will Rogaine affect my sperm quality or cause any genetic problem?

Fastmink
AskDocWeb: There are no reports of Rogaine having any effect on either one. Good luck with the family adventure.

Subj: Rogaine 5%
Date: 3/9/2010
I’ve used 2% Rogaine with some success. Is 5% dangerous for women? If so, why? I am 67 years old with hair loss on top and sides. Thanks.

Lynn
AskDocWeb: Women have reported the growth of unwanted facial hair when using the 5% strength of any minoxidil product, including Rogaine.

Subj: Unwanted hair growth
Date: 3/10/2010
At the end of January I started applying 5% men’s minoxidil to my receding hairline per my dermatologist’s recommendation to try it! Within a few weeks, I did notice peach fuzz growing where there had been no hair on my scalp. Shortly thereafter I noticed a great deal of hair growth on my face, above and below my lips (black hairs and long blonde/grey hairs and on my cheeks, sideburns and chin.

In retrospect, I do believe that a doctor should ask questions about a female patient’s early medical history before prescribing something “to try”. In my 20’s and 30’s I had thyroiditis as well as irregular periods, and I had electrolysis to remove unwanted hair. The electrolysis did remove the growth permanently and I hadn’t noticed any distressing growth until a few years into menopause. Considering what I experienced in my early years, I don’t think I ever should have tried minoxidil at such a strong dosage. Which is better, a hairy face or a receding hairline??? I also developed a very dry, itchy scalp as well as very swollen, itchy eyelids. I hope all of these problems resolve themselves as I stopped using the minoxidil 10 days ago. I know it takes time…I will try to be patient but a close look in the mirror does not ease my mind!
