Subj: Unwanted facial hair?
Date: 3/12/2010
Hey my name is John and I am 22 years old and I’ve been using rogaine for two weeks now. I sometimes accidentally put drops of rogaine on my face. Will this cause unwanted facial hair? Also, is it best to put water on the place where the rogaine drops accidentally go on my face?

John
AskDocWeb: Unwanted facial hair may develop if the Rogaine is left on the skin too long. Rinsing the area where the drops go accidentally should help prevent the growth of unwanted facial hair.

Subj: Frequency of use
Date: 3/15/2010
i´ve been uaing minoxidil 2% daily for past 5 months. hairfall has reduced and hair looks fuller. Is it ok to reduce the frequency to, say, alternate days?

Amber
AskDocWeb: Reducing the frequency to once every other day would be one fourth of what is recommended by the manufacturer. So far, no one has reported success with that approach.

Subj: 48 weeks?
Date: 3/17/2010
Just wondering if minxodil stops being effective over a period of time? I have been diagnosed with diffuse alopecia and minoxidil 5% has helped so far. My doc says dat minoxidil should be used for atleast 48 weeks and we will slowly wean it off after a year to see if there is further hair loss…is this true? Can I actually keep the beenfits as I do not suffer from androgenetic alopecia?

Nw1
AskDocWeb: That specific period of time (48 weeks) probably comes from the government publication, Drug Facts from the FDA.

Subj: 22 year old girl
Date: 3/17/2010
im just 22 year old girl losing hair so i consulted my doctor she prescribed me to use minioxidil 10% in day time and minokem 5% in night time inspite of using this i dint found any result rather feel patches on my scalp so i want to stop using this treatment but my doctor told if i stop using minioxidil all the hair which have grown will fall out with in 6 months and i have to use this till my life time, so pzl clear my doubt. If i stop using minioxidil will my hair which have penetrated thought minioxidil will fall out.

Rose
AskDocWeb: While it is true that if you stop using a product that prevents hair loss, you lose the benefits it provided, the use of 10% minoxidil may present another problem. In the USA, women are not prescribed minoxidil stronger than 2% because of the growth of unwanted facial hair and body hair. Please read the package insert that comes with the product.

Subj: Statistics for African Americans?
Date: 3/19/2010
I am african american and would like to know if Minoxidil will work for me. Do you have any data for african americans?

Lay
AskDocWeb: Hair loss statistics for African Americans run about the same as other races with one exception and that has to do with causes of hair loss. If your hair loss is caused by the use of styling techniques such as relaxers, extensions, weaves, or hot combs, then Minoxidil is not likely to help. Trauma (traction alopecia) and heat can cause permanent scaring of the skin around hair follicles ending their ability to grow hair. That aside, Monoxidil works better on those who are younger and whose hair loss is recent.

Subj: Shedding
Date: 3/21/2010
I am a girl-19. My fore head hairs have started to go in. I first used minioxidal 5% for 3months. Hair grew well but after stopping, the hairs started to shed. iam worried. Is there any way to protect it from shedding or is that i should use this solution life long. please help.

Priya
AskDocWeb: As a girl, you should be aware that women have reported the growth of unwanted facial hair when using minoxidil stronger than 2%. All of the products for hair loss currently on the market share this same drawback, if you stop using it, you start shedding and lose the benefits that the product provided. We are watching for a permanent solution to hair loss but so far there isn’t one.

Subj: Tressgro gel
Date: 3/23/2010
I am 31 Male, suffering from Androgenic Alopecia for over 2 years now and I was given MisScalp gel 5% ( Minoxidil 5% ) but then it used to put me to sleep soon after applying and I started feeling light headed. I went to the doc and he said that minoxidil is being toxic on me and gave me a complete herbal gel ( tressgro gel ). I am applying it for 2 days now. Will see how it goes…

Subj: Results after 48 weeks?
Date: 3/24/2010
How long do the hair growth effects last? I just ordered it and was reading the instructions that came with. I’m confused, it says that if you stop taking it, you will lose your newly regrown hair in 3-4 months. It also says: “In studies with Minoxidil Topical Solution 5%, hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment…” Is this saying that either way, after a year you are going to lose the results one way or another. OR, is it just saying that after a year it won’t get any thicker but you can still maintain the new hair you gained earlier?

Jordan
AskDocWeb: We don’t know. When asking a number of experts you get both answers to this question. Hopefully there will be more input from long term users to find out.

Subj: Tips for rapid hair growth?
Date: 3/27/2010
I am using Minokem 2% since one year but my hair growth is tremendous slow. Please suggest me what shall I do for rapid here growth.

Sujoy
AskDocWeb: There are things you can do and things to avoid if you want your hair to grow as fast as possible. You want to avoid doing those things that slow your hair growth such as

  • Eating lots of fatty foods
  • Eating lots of sugar
  • Smoking
  • Caffeine and sodas
  • Coloring your hair
  • Using Perms and hair straighteners

Now make sure you are doing those things that support healthy hair growth:

  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Exercise frequently
  • Take supplements known to boost hair growth: Vitamins B, C, E, Beta Carotene, Magnesium.

You may also want to use a shampoo that supports hair growth such as Nisim NewHair Biofactors.

Subj: After discontinuing minoxidil
Date: 4/7/2010
I’m female, age 30 yrs. I was recommended by my dermatologist to use Regro with 5% of minoxidil and to be used forever. I used it for 4 yrs with not much improvements and decided to stop using it the last 5 months. My hair started falling double in quantity and now im under herbal treatment. How long will it take for this side effect to stop? Will herbal shampoos work after using minoxidil? I mean after discontinuing minoxidil. Will it effect somehow? please advise. Thank you in advance.

Sheela

AskDocWeb: It may take two or three months for the hair loss to slow down after discontinuing the minoxidil. After that your hair loss will return to its normal rate. There is no way to know how effective your herbal shampoo treatment might be. Which one are you using?
