Subj: How long is minoxidil effective?
Date: 9/20/2010
I read that Minoxidil only regrows for 48 a weeks. Does that mean you will only regrow hair for that time then lose it after 48 weeks? Or is it saying you will only regrow for up to 48 weeks and the hair that is regrown in that time frame will stay as long as you are still using Minoxidil?
Jim
AskDocWeb: The Drug Facts from the FDA says that, “Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men.” It does not say anything about what happens after that.
Subj: Birth defects?
Date: 9/20/2010
Should I stop using rogaine since my wife and I are planning to try to conceive soon? Can my using rogaine cause birth defects?
Mark
AskDocWeb: The FDA has put topical Minoxidil topical in pregnancy category C. Animal studies using oral minoxidil have failed to reveal evidence of causing birth defects, but reduced conception rates and an increased incidence of fetal absorption have been observed in rabbits given 5 times the usual human oral dose. The manufacturer of topical Minoxidil says that it should not be administered to pregnant women.

Date: 9/23/2010

Anju
AskDocWeb: Mintop 5% contains a 5% solution of minoxidil, which has been shown to increase hair count in men by an average of 37% so it is worth trying. It is available online and at your local drugstore.
Subj: Question about minoxidil
Date: 9/25/2010
I’ve been using minoxidil 5% for 5mths now and after the first month I could see short thin hairs where applied and since then it has stayed that way. So will these hair grow to normal size hairs and if so how long?
Paul
AskDocWeb: It is not possible to predict how well you will respond to minoxidil because all men don’t respond the same way. In general the maximum benefit is reached somewhere between 6 months and 1 year after starting treatment.
Subj: Narcolepsy?
Date: 9/29/2010
I have been using Rogaine since I was 20 years old and have seen improvement in my hair loss. However, I started to feel tired and fatigued, which worsened over the years. By 24 I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, an incurable disorder resulting in severe daytime sleepiness and abnormal sleep patterns. Narcolepsy is caused by an autoimmune reaction where the body’s immune system attacks the brain and kills the cells responsible for sleep. Could Rogaine be the culprit, as the immune system detected it as a foreign body? I am now 33.
Balding and tired
AskDocWeb: Although fainting is one of the rare serious side effects of minoxidil, that has nothing to do with narcolepsy. We didn’t find any connection between narcolepsy and Rogaine (minoxidil). Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that affects the control of sleep and consciousness. The cause of narcolepsy is not known; however, scientists have discovered chemicals in the brain that may signal sleep and awake cycles. Some experts think narcolepsy may be due to a deficiency in the production of a chemical called hypocretin by the brain. According to the experts, it is likely that narcolepsy involves multiple factors that interact to cause neurological dysfunction and REM sleep disturbances.
Subj: No more hair loss?
Date: 10/1/2010
I am using the Minto Forte 5% for the past 4 months (twice a day) and found improvement in hair regrowth. Now I have reduce the use to one time a day. Could please tell me when can I stop using the Mintop so that there wont be any more hair loss.
Baiju
AskDocWeb: Unfortunately the benefits of all products used to treat hair loss stop within a few months of discontinuing. If you want to keep the benefits, you have to continue using the product. That is the difference between a treatment and a cure. Since it is more profitable for the drug companies to treat diseases than it is to cure them, it looks like that is where they put the majority of their research.
Subj: Long term effects
Date: 10/2/2010
Does anybody know the long term effects of using Rogain, minoxidil? I am talking about 10 – 15 years? I have used it for 14 years. After using it 12 years, I started to experience a strange stiffness in my muscles after physical activity. First I felt pain in my hip, then my knees and wrists, and finally in my ribs and neck. I have checked everything with my doctors and everything is all right. Could it have anything to do with long term use of Rogain?? Have anybody experienced anything similar?
Arnold
Subj: No good results
Date: 10/6/2010
I have been using mintop 2% since 1 year but no good results observed even feeling lost hairs before than, So pls suggest should i continue or stop, If stop than what action should i take?
Gaurav
AskDocWeb: If you haven’t seen results after a year of using Mintop then it is highly unlikely that continuing will do any good. Have you read the Tips to Prevent Hair Loss?
Subj: Hair started graying
Date: 10/10/2010
I have dandruff problem. My hair started graying at the age of 25. Now my age is 35. Now my hair has become very thin. Should I use Mintop 5%. Can it prevent hair graying. Besides Mintop lotion what supplement should I take. Pl suggest me.
Akshay
AskDocWeb: Mintop does not prevent the hair from graying. On the contrary, the patient information for minoxidil, the active ingredient in Mintop, says that you should check with your doctor if you experienced changes in hair color while using this product. You might check to make sure that your shampoo isn’t causing any problems.
Subj: How long to use Mintop?
Date: 10/12/2010
Sir, I am using Mintop 2% for past 3 months. How Long to use this Product?
Sheela
AskDocWeb: The benefits last only a few months after discontinuing the product. Once you stop using it the hair loss typically resumes within three months.
Subj: Does Minoxidil lose its effectiveness?
Date: 10/17/2010
I started using Minoxidil 2 years ago, but then stopped about 9 months later as my hair looked nice and thick. Over the next 4 months I lost a LOT of hair. I started up Minoxidil again 6 months ago and my hair became thick again. I have been using it for 6 months non stop this time, but am noticing that it is going very thin again on the top of my head. Does Minoxidil lose its effectiveness after so long? It doesn’t seem to be having the effects it did even 2 months ago?
Nic
AskDocWeb: It is pretty difficult to tell the difference between building up a tolerance for the drug and those who’s underlying condition is becoming worse. In the latter case the minoxidil may not be strong enough to be effective when the condition becomes worse.
Subj: Washing hair with shampoo?
Date: 10/20/2010
I am using Mintop 10% for 1 month. Now i am applying mintop twice a day after washing hair with shampoo. Do we need to shampoo the hair before applying Mintop? Please suggest.
Satish
AskDocWeb: The instructions say to make sure that your hair and scalp are completely dry before applying it but there is no mention of any need to shampoo before applying Mintop. Washing the hair twice a day may lead to a significant dandruff problem.
Subj: Decrease in sexual ability
Date: 10/20/2010
I’ve been using Rogaine foam for a little over a month. However, during that time I’ve noticed a decrease in sexual ability. Similar to those on this site, my desire is still there but the ability to get an erection is lower. It has been mentioned that if too much is absorbed into the bloodstream this could happen. Should I stop using the Rogaine, or try to lower my usage to once a day?

AskDocWeb: Using it only once a day will not produce the same effect as following the instructions that come with the product. The package insert says to apply it only to those areas where you want hair to grow. Please read and follow the instructions.
