Subj: Mintop
Date: 7/20/2006
I am 21/m, well I do belong to a family with earlier record of hair losses, but all of them at late 40’s. In my case it has begun from last year or two, am really worried about that. I consulted my doctor today, he prescribed me with mintop 5%. Am really excited about that. Well as far as my hair loss is concerned its in the top scalp and also in the frontal (forehead) and side-frontals. What are my chances?

Kishor

AskDocWeb: Everyone is different of course but with Mintop it looks like you have a one in five chance of being satisfied long-term because of the Minoxidil in it.

Subj: Minoxidil tolerance
Date: 7/23/2006
Hey, I know minoxidil is not meant for hairlines, but I’m giving it a go anyway since I’m in the early stages. I’ve already been taking procerin for a couple months. I think the minoxidil is helping, but it’s way too soon to know how far these little hairs on my forehead will grow. Some have darkened. From a distance, it still looks roughly the same though. I just wanted to know if anyone has had any success with minoxidil on the hairline. I know what the box says but I’ve heard the studies on minoxidil were done on the vertex, and I would think people who are bald in the back would be less likely to regrow the front since that’s usually the first to go. Also, I’ve heard a few stories about people having success with minoxidil for a couple years and then losing their hair again. Is this common?

Matt

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is common. People seem to develop a tolerance for Minoxidil within a year and it stops working.

Subj: Minoxidil caused hospital treatment
Date: 7/27/2006
I am a 53 y/o man and I have used Minoxidil extra strength for 15 years. No reactions except that two years ago without warning I suffered from severe fluid retention. My heart rate went to 35 and I needed assistance to breathe. I spent two weeks in hospital undergoing every possible test but with no positive result. No treatment was given while I was being tested but a diuretic immediately returned my weight to normal. The conclusion seems to be that Minoxidil was to blame.

Subj: Minoxidil 2%-Estrogen
Date: 8/27/2006
I have several questions to ask as follows:

1) How long the minoxidil will still be in the scalp after one stopped using it?

2) Does Minoxidil has an effect on the Estrogen? Will that effect a woman’s fertility?

3) Will Minoxidil kill the Hair Shafts totally (for the hairs lost during the shedding phase)?

4) How does Minoxidil work?

Thank you. Best Regards,

Jenny (42-female)

AskDocWeb: We haven’t seen any documentation on how long Minoxidil stays in the body after discontinuing use. Most should be out of your body within a few days. There is no record of it affecting fertility or killing the hair shafts during shedding. The way in which Minoxidil works is not fully understood. It is known to increase circulation and that alone could account for its effectiveness.

Subj: Long term effects of Minoxidil
Date: 8/28/2006
I have been using Minoxidil for about 8 months now and have seen a great improvement in my existing hair and it helps revitalize dormant hairs. I however recently noticed that it has made me gain weight and is really affecting the elasticity of my skin. I can see frown wrinkles in my forehead and it has also cause puffiness under my eyes. My eyes look like they have dark circles around them. As of today I have discontinue the use because it is not worth the side effects, not to mention the extra flaking dry scalp every now and then. I read on this forum that it can take up to 14 days for the drug to be completely out of your system. I was wondering should my skin return to normal after I discontinue use?

Lonnie

AskDocWeb: The flaking will go away, but the frown wrinkles probably won’t. The skin discoloration beneath your eyes should go away and the puffiness too.

Subj: Minoxidil sperm count
Date: 8/29/2006
Is the use of 1ml of 5% Minoxidil twice a day in scalp leading to low sperm count?

DR. AJIT KUMAR PATANGIA

AskDocWeb: No, using minoxidil has not been reported to lead to a decreased sperm count.

Subj: Regaine 5%
Date: 8/30/2006
Hi, I am using regaine 5% for 6 weeks and I experienced only shedding. I am 19 years old and I would like to ask how many years does minoxidil effectiveness last and what can I do to keep hair forever.

Than

AskDocWeb: There is no perfect solution that would allow you to keep hair forever – yet. According to the FDA, in the clinical trials, hair regrowth with Minoxidil has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks.

Subj: Minoxidil and children?
Date: 8/31/2006
Hi, my daughter is 3 and has alopecia. Her dermatologist has recommended we use the 5% minoxidil. I have expressed my concerns and have not started using it. Is the product safe for a 3 yr. old? What might be a better treatment option? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Michelle

AskDocWeb: We would ask for documentation from the dermatologist on the safety of using 5% Minoxidil on children. The package insert says that it is not to be used by those under 18 years of age. According to the PDR, “Do not use on babies and children.”

Subj: Hair loss improved
Date: 9/3/2006
I used Rogaine for about 7 months. After a couple of months my hair loss improved a lot. I stopped using it for a couple of weeks and the hair loss began again. I started using it again. It’s been two months now and I see no improvement yet. Will it work again?

Elsie

AskDocWeb: It may take another 4-6 weeks to see improvement. If there is no improvement by then we would try something else.

Subj: Thinning hair on top
Date: 9/8/2006
I have thinning of hair on the top and the vertex of my head. For the vertex I am using 5% topical minoxidil, but what could I use for the top.
Kenn

AskDocWeb: You can also use the Minoxidil on the top of your head. Other products to consider are Provillus, Advecia, and a shampoo for hair loss like Nisim Biofactors.

Subj: Best product for temple and front areas
Date: 9/23/2006
I’m using Procerin for a month now and also using Nizoral shampoo 2%. May the shampoo complete the action of the pills and make it unnecessary to start with minoxidil? Which product is the best for temple and front areas? Thank you,

Mark

AskDocWeb: None of the products for hair loss work well enough in those areas to make a recommendation.

Subj: Minoxidil questions
Date: 9/24/2006
I have the following queries to you regarding minoxidil 2% a) I am using it for more than 2 years continuously, it has produced little results, is it wise to continue further b) I am feeling tired, and my neck is paining many a times, is this factor because of minoxidil c) In case if I have used minoxidil in more quantum, how to solve the problem. Kindly advise me immediately to the above id. Thanking you Regards,

Arun

AskDocWeb: We think that further use is probably a waste of time and money. If your symptoms disappear over the two weeks following the day you discontinue use, you may conclude that the Minoxidil caused them.

Subj: Receding hair lines
Date: 9/27/2006
Is there anything for receding hair lines? I do have loss on the top of head, shall I use it there only? I put rogain on whole head like twice is this a problem will I now loose hair in those areas…hair line not looking good please suggest a plan of action thanks,

Camzee

AskDocWeb: Okay, here’s a three step plan of action, but keep in mind that this is just one way to deal with hair loss, there are many. 1. Use Rogaine twice a day to stimulate hair growth in those areas you want it to grow. 2. Use Provillus to prevent hair loss. 3. Use a good shampoo for hair loss like Nisim Biofactors. Continue for 3 or 4 months then drop the Rogaine. Continue with the other two for maintenance.

Subj: 5% Minoxidil
Date: 10/6/2006
Hey guys, great website. I just had a question about Minoxidil. I’m 23 and have had a receding hairline along the temples for the past year or so. I recently bought a generic rogaine brand that’s 5% minoxidil, and after I bought it I realized that 5% is supposed to be used for the crown, and that 2% minoxidil was supposed to be used for the temples. My question is, is it possible to use 5% minoxidil on the temples? Will it just provide a stronger dose or will it cause any side effects or be unheathy in any way? Thank you.

Brandon

AskDocWeb: The stronger dosage does increase the chance of side effects so we recommend that you make yourself aware of those possibilities. On the other hand, there is at least one research group that is experimenting with using 12.5% Minoxidil for hair loss. We’ll let you know when we find out their results.

Subj: Rogaine side effects
Date: 10/7/2006
Hi, I’ve been using rogaine for a month now and I’m having some of the following side effects, dry, red and itchy skin in my ears, eyelids area and my arms. Are these normal? Thank you,

Jose

AskDocWeb: No, it’ not normal. It sounds like you may be having a reaction in which case you would want to stop the minoxidil.

Subj: Prostate enlargement
Date: 10/10/2006
Are there any reported side effects with using minoxidil on prostate enlargement?

Sam

AskDocWeb: None.

Subj: Can see the difference
Date: 10/13/2006
I use minoxidil and I like it, it worked for me. I used it for two months. And I can see the different in my hair. I had dye my hair and in two weeks I seen new growth. I have high blood pressure but I haven’t felt any of the side effects. Thank You for the information on this web site, I plan on buying more.

Arlene

Subj: Irregular heartbeat
Date: 10/19/2006
I’m 49 and I’ve been using Minoxidil 2% and later 5% on and off for about the last 10years. I was recently diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). Is there any chance this could have been caused by the Minoxidil? I have always applied the correct amount to the scalp.

Michael

AskDocWeb: We’ve not heard of any heart problems “caused” by Minoxidil but the patient information on the package insert warns users to stop use and contact a doctor in the event of chest pain or rapid heartbeat. Also those with any kind of heart disease are warned to ask a doctor before using this product.

Subj: Nioxin or Nisim?
Date: 10/26/2006
Hi, I’ve noticed you’ve recommended Nisim Biofactors. Do you know anything about how it compares to Nioxin? Nisim claims to regrow hair, whereas Nioxin claims to give thicker “looking” hair; however, they both claim to block DHT. I’ve been using Nioxin conditioner without the shampoo, thinking it might regrow something, but after going to their websight, it seems only the shampoo and serum claim to block DHT. Do either actually “regrow” hair, or do they just give a thicker appearance?

Matt

AskDocWeb: Nioxin just gives a thicker appearance, that’s why we don’t recommend it. Although there has been little feedback on Nisim so far, it seems to actually help. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
