Subj: Blow dry hair?
Date: 12/14/2010
Hello I have been experiencing hair loss, thinning of the scalp. Patches all over the head. It’s very depressing since i had such beautiful hair. I am taking biotin and minoxidil perscribed from a dermatologist. As i place on my scalp i find that my hairs get dry and was wondering if that would make my hair fall out more, and i would like to know if its safe to blow dry hair and how many times a week i should wash my hair. Is there anything i should know while taking the medication? Very sad,
Robin
AskDocWeb: It is important to read the package insert that comes with the product. That has the instructions for use and important safety information. Remember that minoxidil is flammable until it dries. The package insert warns that hair loss may increase temporarily when you first start using minoxidil. How often you wash your hair depends on how much dirt your hair collects from your daily work environment, your hair type and how prone your hair is to drying or becoming oily. Generally speaking, if your hair tends to be dry, shampooing too often will worsen that. If you have to blow dry your hair, using the warm or cool setting will avoid heat damage. When you dry your hair with a towel, keep in mind that rubbing can cause breakage. Blotting the hair with a towel is better but just air drying is best for avoiding hair loss.
Subj: Too many products?
Date: 12/14/2010
I’m 28, white male. Started losing it at 24. I’m taking procerin, 15%minoxidil, shen mins dht blocker and using revenu shampoo. I think I’m coming out of the shedding phase. I’ve been using these for about a month and a half. I’m wondering if using too many products could be counter-productive?
Bryan
AskDocWeb: That is a legitimate concern, especially if an unwanted side effect shows up. If you are using several products at the same time, how do you know which product produced the side effect?
Subj: Minimum time for results?

Subj: Less desire for sex
Date: 12/16/2010
Hi I’m using minixodial 10% twice a day and I’m suffering from a less desire for sex but my libido is very perfect so can minoxidil be the reason? Thanks,
Ahmed
AskDocWeb: According to the Mayo Clinic, an overdose of the 5% solution has caused a decrease in sexual ability or desire. The product you are using is twice as strong.
Subj: Overdose of minoxidil 10%
Date: 12/16/2010
Hi I’m suffering from a decrease of sex desire because of the overdose of minoxidil 10% twice a day so if reduce it to 2% twice a day can this side effect disappeared?
Ahmed
AskDocWeb: Changing to the lower 2% solution is likely to have a lot less side effects.
Subj: Minoxidil helps

I am 35 y/o and have been experiencing hair loss for quite some time, since the ago of 27yrs. Last yr after child delivery my hair loss increased 3 fold. The frontal part of my head/scalp was clearly visible and I couldn’t hide it. I shunned away from taking pictures and felt very unattractive. It’s important to mention that my dad has been bald since his 30’s and my mom since her 40’s. I felt doomed. I felt there was no escaping this baldness, it’s in my genes.
After many times of avoiding mirrors and dodging pictures, I decided to do some research on Dermatologist who specialize in Hair loss. I struck some luck and found a Hair loss specialist/dermatologist about an hour from me. I was told she had been in several publications and has trained other practioners across the nation in regards to hair loss. Short version of my session with her: “You have Telogen effluvium and your baldness is inherited. There are products you could use to hide your baldness such as powders and sprays. You could see if Minoxidil will work for you after you stop nursing your baby, but it’s costly and it probably won’t work for you since you have a family history of baldness.” I walked out that clinic crying, I couldn’t believe there was nothing I could do but to hide the baldness with a powder or paint! It was depressing news! Well I was determined to get my hair back despite my unfortunate hair genes and medical advice.
It’s important to mention that I have a very health lifestyle; physically active/fit, excellent diet, and essentially not too much stress. After I stopped nursing my baby at 19months, I went and bought 5% Minoxidil. I also purchased several Vitamins and supplements that after doing my some research supposedly helped with hair loss and growth (Saw Palmetto, Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc, Biotin, Prenatal Vitamins, and Niacin). I have been on this regimen for 3.5months and let me let the world know IT HELP IMMENSELY! I have my hair back on my head 🙂 However, the texture of my hair has changed it is much thicker and curlier, but I don’t mind. I am happier seeing that than my scalp.
I have developed some unwanted facial hair, by I deal with that by going to my local salon and get a facial hair wax ($30). I really think I found the perfect concoction, 5% minoxidil 2x/day and my supplements. I am grateful for minoxidil! The only thing I wish for now is that they develop a formula that you could take a break from for maybe several months for save some $$.
I wish my story gives some hope and insight to getting your hair back. Just remember I was losing hair since I was 27y/o and now I’m 35y/o. Please give it a try. If anyone has any information on hair texture change with Minoxidil I’d appreciate it, as my hair is now really poofy (smile).

Subj: Results less than desirable
Date: 12/20/2010
I’ve used minoxidil for well over 10 years to minimize hair loss on the sides and back of my head. The results have been less than desirable. I wondering if data has been collected on the long term affect of minoxidil usage? I would like to stop using the product all together, however I am fearful of the possibility of experiencing a dramatic shedding period. However I did read that the solutions effectiveness is gone after 48 months of continuous usage. I’ve been currently using a product call Folica MD which was highly recommended by a proprietor of a health food store I frequent. I’ve using the all natural product for slightly over a month and it is too early to share in my findings. Thank you in advance for your help.
Barry
AskDocWeb: There doesn’t seem to be any information or feedback on Folica MD yet.
Subj: Bad vision, swollen face, and tearing
Date: 12/21/2010
i recently used 2% minoxidil for 1 month, my side effects are now bad vision, swollen face, and tearing of the eyes so i stopped using it. Can you tell me how long doe it take for this to leave my system and the side effects to return to normal?
Elj
AskDocWeb: Although oral minoxidil has a half-life of only 4.2 hours, when it is applied topically it has a half-life of 22 hours in the skin. Generally most drugs take about 5 times their half-life to completely clear the body. That means that it takes just over four and a half days to completely leave your system.
Subj: Hair turning white, itching, and pimples
Date: 12/22/2010
Hi AskDocWeb, I am in a real need to help. Please suggest me what to do. I had been using various Minoxidil Solutions USP 5%: Topgain 2%; Morr 2%; MX5; Hair4U Minoxidil & Aminexil Topical soln 5%; CoverIt-5% (currently using this) from past 4 yrs. Many a times I apply about 2 ML of the solution in one go, since I dont have the time to apply it twice at two different times. In last 6 months I have observed that my hairs above the left and right ear are turning White, I am having very much itching and pimples are growing on my head. 1) Please suggest what should I do to avoid this? 2) Secondly I want to know what are the side effects of this solution? 3) What I sould I do to now reverse the side effects, if any have occured (but might not be very visible as of now)? Thanks.
Zak7TT
AskDocWeb: The side effects of minoxidil are listed here. It is important to apply only the amount of minoxidil indicated in the instructions that come with the product. Using more than that is likely to result in several unwanted side effects, including itching, and does not produce better results. The manufacturer says that it should be applied twice a day for best results. The bottom line is, follow the instructions.
Subj: Facial hair growth
Date: 12/28/2010
I am 24 years old female. I used Minoxidil 5% for two months twice a day and caused facial hair growth. I have stopped using it. How long will it take for the hair on face to fall out? Is it completely reversible? I am upset please reply me.
Yd
AskDocWeb: In every case that we know of, the growth of facial hair was reversible once the drug was discontinued. The time it takes for that to happen varies from a few weeks to a few months.
Subj: Issues with Rogaine
Date: 1/1/2011
I’ve been using Rogaine for 10 months. I have the following issues with this product:
1) It’s not a practical solution for the real world in terms of application. How many people can really wait for the their hair to be completely dry (naturally) before application? Most people jump in the shower, perform their usual hair styling procedure and then go to work. If the scalp is expected to be completely dry before usage, this implies that you must wait around 20-30 minutes before applying Rogaine. The other complication is that the instructions state that you can NOT apply any other hair styling products before Rogaine has been applied. ONCE AGAIN not a practical option for most people that don’t have extra time on their hands. The prescribed steps appear to be:
a) Shower.
B) Wait 20 mins (minimum for hair to dry)
c) apply Rogaine.
D) wait for this to be absorbed into scalp.
E) apply hair styling products (OR AM I MISSING something???)
2) I have defiantly noticed a drop in sexual performance (this appears to be a common thread on this forum) The packaging should make this MUCH clearer for potential users.
3) I have also noticed a pain in my testicles, I’m sure this is a side affect. I have very good health otherwise.
4) The results are very subjective in terms of actual benefits. The propensity to overdose is high since the dispensing mechanism is very subjective. Apply 6 drops.. This is based on the supplied pump operating correctly. My experience is that this is a poor design and often clogs up (despite rising after each use)
5) Clearer guidelines on how to practically integrate this product or any other Minoxidil derivative based product into a ‘normal’ lifestyle would be a welcome addition.
