Subj: New hair growth cycle
Date: 5/22/2011
Hi there, your site has been very helpful to me but I have a question I believe I haven’t come across yet. I am 30 year old male, with moderate hair loss (vertex + temples). I’ve been on propecia and minoxidil for over a year. My hair condition has improved a lot, which is both mine and my friends opinion. The thing is about the NEW HAIR. I have noticed a lot of new hair growing all over my head after about 7-8 months after starting the treatment – hundreds of it. It seems very delicate, thin and weak though. And I am concerned with the fact that I’m losing a lot of this “new hair” after washing my head. It’s hard to say precisely but I lose up to 100 pieces of tiny, little hair after each washing and only a few of “old, long hair” in the meantime (my hair is long – down to my shoulders). I don’t notice basiclly ANY hair falling out while combing or drying – ONLY after washing.
Is it possible that “the new propecia and minoxidil regrown hair” isn’t strong and thick enough in the first cycle? So it has to fall out and will be growing back stronger and thicker within the each next cycle?? So it’s gonna take a while before it become 100% normal, fully strong hair? As I said before and I am happy and satisfied with the results and determined to stick with the regimen but this kind of bring me down a bit. Have You come across anything like that before? If so, Is it anything to be worried with? How long it may last? Anything I can do about it? I’m looking forward to your opinion. Thanks a lot and all the best.

AskDocWeb: Losing those fine hairs is usually a good sign and means that a new growth cycle is beginning. The hairs that were previously weak are making way for the new healthy ones. Eventually, new growth should appear. With continued use over time, these new hairs should become the same color and thickness as the rest of the hairs on your scalp. Since hair growth is a long process, it is important to stay on course, and not become discouraged. Disclaimer: Minoxidil will not work for all women and individual results will vary.
Subj: Dualgen15
Date: 5/22/2011
AskDocWeb, what do you think of this product Dualgen15: 15% Minoxidil & 5% Azelaic Acid, less redness and itch.
Spike
AskDocWeb: We don’t have an opinion about that particular product however, products with more than 5% minoxidil have been reported to cause the growth of unwanted body hair.

Subj: Grow my beard and chest hair
Date: 6/1/2011
I am using minoxidil topival solution 2% (mintop) and taking biotin tablets to grow my beard and chest hair, will it work? I have no beard on my chin, please help?
Subham
AskDocWeb: Minoxidil has been clinically tested on the scalp but not on other areas of the body. The results of applying minoxidil on areas other than the scalp are unpredictable. There is also an increased risk of side effects.
Subj: Crown is thinning
Date: 6/2/2011
I am 23 years old and my crown is thinning. Everytime i gel my hair i can see more and more of my scalp. Do you recommend me using minoxidil?
Andy
AskDocWeb: Losing some hair daily is normal but if you are losing more and more then you may want to get a complete medical physical to rule out thyroid and other problems that can cause hair loss.
Subj: Min 5% and greasy hair
Date: 6/5/2011
I am 25 years old male. I must say that in the last 2-3 years i noticed that that i’ve started to loose some hair, slow but steady. I’ve decided to buy Min 5% and im using it for a month already. In the same time im using shampoo that contains ketoconazole (washing my hair 1-2 times a week), im using Merz pills (vitamins and minerals) and i’m drinkin a lot of green tea because i’ve heard it’s very great for the entire organisam and the hair at the same time. In this month, i’ve noticed that my hair became greasy and while i apply the minoxidil i notice that i (get) 10-15 hair in my hands, same happens when i wash my hair. This wasn’t happening before i started to use the Minoxidil. So my question is, should i continue using this product or should i stop so i don’t loose the hair that i had before i started using this product, is this normal or not. Thx a lot.

AskDocWeb: The patient information for minoxidil does note that an increase in hair loss may occur during the first few weeks of use. This initial period of shedding has been reported to occur in a small percentage of individuals with all hair loss products. Typically it lasts a few weeks and then the hair recovers whether the product is discontinued or not.
You may want to check on different formulations of Min (minoxidil). Some will not make the hair as greasy or at least they are advertised as non-greasy. Is the foam available in your area?
Subj: Hairfall problem…
Date: 6/9/2011
I’m 22 yr old female.. I have a problem of hairfall..infact my scalp is visible.. I have center partition of my hairs automatically. I’m very upset so plz do advice me. My doctor has recommended firstly by hair 4 u 5% bt nw pilogro solution (minoxidil topical solution usp 2%) nd clop lotion nd tablets which i use 2 eat are “NOVO-phane+” and “palmeto”…. plz plz plz do help me….dnt ignore it.
Surbhi
AskDocWeb: The minoxidil may take several months to work so you will likely need patience. NOVOphane+ appears to be a supplement intended to promote the growth of hair. It is rich in sulfur amino acids, vitamins B2, B5, B6, C, E, Cystine, Methionine, Biotin, Iron, Magnesium, and minerals. However, that also takes about 3 months to see results so follow your doctor’s directions and let us know how well it works.
Subj: Severe side effects
Date: 6/18/2011
Minoxidil gave me severe side effects after trying it for just 2 times. I swear just 2 times, once in the evening before bed and the next day in the morning. Immediately, after application, my whole body started itching, I thought it will be gone in few minutes but it never did. It kept increasing more and became more painful each day and then it would change to burning of the whole body for about a month.
Two weeks later I had severe chest pain and tenderness in breasts. In addition, acne on my forehead, blurred vision, itching of the eyes, horrible night mares, inability to sleep for about 2 weeks and panic attacks. Please bare in mind that I had only used this drug for 2 times only. Four months after I stopped using this drug, I still have some mild body itching and breast tenderness of this drug.
I have been to a lot of doctors and they think I am crazy and that I need antidepressant treatment. Also, been to the ER for chest pain but they couldn’t find any explanation to my chest pain. The doctors made feel like as if I was an idiot and this could not happen from a topical solution and made me feel so bad and not to mention all the money I had to pay with no results. This medication caused me big problems in my marriage also as my husband believes the doctors and not me that I have to be put on zoloft and that the problem is in my head but not Minoxidil. Please be aware that this drug is not for human consumption. It is a very serious with severe side effects.

Subj: Shocked by results of Minokem
Date: 7/24/2011
I applied Minokem 2% 1 ml and let it for two hours. Then I used a shampo recommended by my Doctor to wash my hair. I was shocked to see my hair coming out from my roots and lost abt 200 strands of Hair. I am not sure is this product for hair growth or hair fall. I have never had hair fall in my whole life.
Shreepal
AskDocWeb: Minokem is a combination of minoxidil, azelaic acid, and tretinoin. The side effects of Minokem are contact dermatitis, headache, local burning, pruritus (itching), flushing, and changes in hair colour or texture.
Subj: Minoxidil for Elder sister
Date: 7/25/2011
My name is Avirup. My elder sis had been using minoxidil-2% for exactly 4 months. It had a positive result but after few days she suddenly suffered from severe itching. Then the doctor prescribed her a gel called tressgro gel mainly for clesnsing her scalp but even using after that she had a frequent hair fall. Another docter then prescribed her a tugain foam but she is scared of using that because of the side effects. Can anyone please give an advice? It’s really an emergency.
Avirup
AskDocWeb: If it really is an emergency then she must be losing an alarming amount of hair. Sudden severe hair loss is often the sign of an underlying health problem such as one of the following:
- Abnormalities in the immune system
- Amino acid deficiency
- Colitis
- Diabetes
- Fungal infections in the scalp
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Hormonal imbalance (estrogen/androgens)
- Lupus
- Protein deficiency
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Thyroid disease (over or under active)
As you can see, most of the above causes of sudden hair loss require medical attention. Has she had a medical physical to rule out these possible causes?
