AskDocWeb: Minoxidil is NOT a quick fix. It takes a few months to see the full effect minoxidil. Unfortunately there is no way to know ahead of time whether or not it will work for you. It do not work for everyone. The only way to find out is to have patience, wait and see.
Subj: Starting to lose hair again
Date: 7/29/2011
I’m using minoxidil(coverit) 5% for almost 10 months. First four seems to be quite well with good strength of hair and now m started loss hair as well as thinning even though I m using the minoxidil regularly. Please suggest me a solution at the earliest.

AskDocWeb: You might consider getting a physical in order to rule out any hair loss that may be caused by disease. Age makes a difference so if you wouldn’t mind telling, how old are you?
Subj: Long term treatment?
Date: 8/3/2011
Is minoxidil a long term treatment? Once you start treatment will you have to continue the rest of your life?
Jackie
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says that if you stop using minoxidil you lose all of the benefits that the product provided and hair loss returns to the rate you were losing it before using minoxidil. You also lose any hair that the minoxidil caused to grow.
Subj: Worried about continuous use
Date: 8/12/2011
Hi,im a 22yr old female and i had a problem of balding at a particular portion on ma head. Doctor recommended mintop 2% and i have been using it for last 1 yr. I’m happy to say that a gradual improvement has been observed. But now im worried whether there would be any side effects due to its continuous usage!! Thank you.
Geeta
AskDocWeb: The most frequently reported long-term effects are scalp irritation, rash, and the increased growth of facial hair. It is difficult to find data about the long-term effects other than from forums like this one. If any readers have used this product for more than 2 years we encourage you to share your results.
Subj: How much minoxidil for a shaved head?
Date: 8/17/2011
I am a 21 year old male and i have been using pilgrow plus solution 5% and my hair is falling and i have been using it for 3 weeks. so i have shaved my hair and i have been using it in morning and at night 1 ml. i heard that shaved areas absorb more of the minoxidil so how much ml should be used in my head for me daily?
Dipu
AskDocWeb: Shaving your head does not appear to make enough of a difference to affect the amount of minoxidil that is appropriate to use. Just continue to follow the directions and report your results after 3 months.
Subj: Dry eyes and red bumps
Date: 8/20/2011
I used minoxidil for 7 to 9 month, 4 months after I started using it I started with dry eyes. At that time I did not make the connection. At around 7 to 9 months my eyes and eye lids became inflammed a few days after going to the eye doctor I noticed when my hair got by my eye they would burn. I washed my hair and stopped using minoxidil. After washing my hair I could put my hair by my eye and they would not burn.
It has been a few weeks since I stopped using minoxidil. I am on an antibiotic to try and get the inflammation clear up in the eyes and eye lids. The other problem that has happened to me is red bumps on the upper part of my legs and back of arms. I really blieve that I had minoxidil in my system and this is what is causing my eye and red bumps problem. Can you tell me how to get this out of my system faster? Would a blood test tell if there is to much in my system? Thanks,
Fern
AskDocWeb: Minoxidil has a short half-life so if you did have it in your system you body would have eliminated it within 24 hours. About the only thing you can do is to follow your doctor’s instructions and stay well hydrated.
Subj: Minoxyl in India
Date: 8/22/2011
Can u tell where would I get minoxyl in India I mean the original one any particular name. and what percentage should I be using?
Ron
AskDocWeb: There seems to be 3 brands of minoxidil available in India: Mintop Forte is manufactured by Dr Reddy, Tugain Gel from Cipla, and Coverit made by Gratia (Micro Labs Ltd). These products have the following contraindications:
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product.
- Patients with cardiac abnormalities.
- Children below 18 years of age, pregnant women and nursing mothers.
- Patients in whom the reason for hair loss is unknown.
- Patients using occlusive dressings or other medicines on the scalp.
- On a shaved scalp, or if there is no family history of hair loss; there is sudden and/or patchy hair loss.
- Patients with red, inflamed infection, or irritated or painful scalp (including psoriasis and sunburn).
- Patients with hypovolemic states (e.g., co-treatment with diuretics, dehydration, etc.)
You should follow the instructions of your dermatologist as he or she can recommend the correct dosage based on observation. 2% is generally for women and 5% for men. Tugain apparently has less alcohol and smell than Dr Reddy’s Mintop Forte. Coverit is said to be cheaper than Mintop or Tugain. However, it is not available in all pharmacies.
Subj: Facial hair growth
Date: 9/9/2011
am 24 yrs of age, i always had a dandruff problem but i have been having severe hair fall for the past 3 months. My doctor prescribed triben ad lotion, mintop 5% n tabs novophane. My fear is that the leaflet of mintop says that there will be facial hair growth … so i am kinda hesitant. Should i really worry?
Sam
AskDocWeb: The additional growth of facial hair is typically not a concern for most men but if Sam is short for Samantha then you may want to go with the 2% solution.
Subj: Dizziness, nausea, and vomiting
Date: 9/11/2011
I am a 34 yr old man I used 5% minoxidil for3 days and suffered severe dizziness and nausea / vomiting. This is the second day since stopping. How long until minoxidil leaves the system and side effects subside?

AskDocWeb: Minoxidil has a short half-life and your system eliminates it within 24 hours. However, if the side effects persist then seek medical attention.
Subj: Breathing problem
Date: 9/14/2011

AskDocWeb: Anyone with breathing problems should seek emergency medical attention as soon as possible.
Subj: Are there any effects in future planning?
Date: 9/23/2011
Dear respective I am male, am using Minoxidil since 6moths & am going to marry within two months, is there any effects in future planning?
Girish
AskDocWeb: Congratulations on the upcoming wedding! If you are concerned about starting a family, Minoxidil has no effect on fertility. The only concern about reproduction is a possible overdose if too much is used or it is used too often. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is a rare side effect of decreased sexual ability or desire for sex when too much is absorbed through the skin. If this happens then you may also experience:
- chest pain
- blurred vision or other changes in vision
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- difficulty breathing
- fainting
- lightheadedness
- flushing
- rapid weight gain
- headache
- numbness or tingling of hands, feet, or face
- swelling of face, hands, feet, or lower legs
If you notice any of the above or other side effects that concern you, check with your doctor.
Subj: The best way and time to apply
Date: 9/24/2011
Hi AskDocWeb, I’d just like to thank you first for having such a helpful site.. So I’m 17 and I already have pattern baldness. I visited a dermatologist and he recommended Hair4U minoxidil 5% along with a natural hair vitalizer. Now, can you please advise the best way, and time, I can apply the two.. If i can apply the two without washing my hair first? Thanks again.
Pranay
AskDocWeb: For best results follow the directions that come with the product. The patient information for minoxidil says to make sure that your hair and scalp are completely dry before applying the medicine. That means you don’t have to worry about washing your hair first. We have not seen any data that indicates a specific time might work better for applying minoxidil so whatever works best for you should be okay.
Subj: How can I avoid side effects?
Date: 9/24/2011
Hi, I’m 19 years old female and I’m loosing hair for last 1.5 years. Main reason for my hair loss is severe typhoid fever. Since then, I’m loosing hair and it’s become thinner. If I use mintop 2% solution, will it work? Does it have side effects? How can I avoid these side effects??
Rifah
AskDocWeb: The only way to find out how well it will work is to try it. You may not be able to completely avoid side effects but you can minimize the possibility of them by carefully following the directions. Using more than the recommended amount does NOT produce better results.
Subj: Developed seborrhea
Date: 9/27/2011
Hi, I stopped using minoxidil 3 months ago. Sincera then, I have developed seborrea. Is that caused for leaving minoxidil or for using finasteride??? Thanks,
Peter
AskDocWeb: Is it possible that you had seborrhea before starting minoxidil? Seborrhea is one cause of hair loss and minoxidil is widely used in treatments for it. Not saying that is the case but if minoxidil was controlling the seborrhea then stopping treatment might let it get out of control.
We have read a number of reports of men developing seborrhea after starting finasteride, some up to 6 months later, but so far there is no documented connection between the two. An increase in male hormones is one of the known causes of seborrhea.
Subj: After discontinuing Minoxidil
Date: 10/5/2011

Curious mum
AskDocWeb: There is no established waiting time so if you want to, you can start right away. Good luck with adding to the family.
