Date: 10/8/2011

AskDocWeb: If you are in the care of a doctor then consult with that doctor before using any other treatment with the treatment your doctor prescribed.

My hair is back
Date: 10/12/2011
I am using finax & minioxidil from 8 months & my hair is back can I stop this drug.

Vinay

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately one of the disadvantages of minoxidil is that you have to keep using it to keep the benefits. If you stop then hair loss increases to the point where you lose all the hair that minoxidil helped grow. That puts you right back to where you were before you started using it. This is true with all the products for hair loss currently on the market. They are “treatments” not cures.

Longterm effects of using minoxidil
Date: 10/15/2011
I’m 24 and wanted to know the longterm effects of using minoxidil, and side effects?

Bryan

AskDocWeb: The side effects of minoxidil are listed in the minoxidil report. The most frequently reported long-term effects are scalp irritation, rash, and the increased growth of facial hair. If any readers have used this product for more than 2 years we encourage you to share your results.

Losing my hair
Date: 10/21/2011
Hi my name is ashish and i am from India i am losing my hair in m shape and MY FRIEND suggested em to use MANEXIL5% (NOT A DOCTOR) so i want to know i shd use it without consulting doctor and how to use till how many hours i shd keep the solution and other things plz help me. I don’t want to go for hair plantation and all.

Ashish

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may not know the cause of your hair loss. In order to find that out you would need to consult with a dermatologist. Hair loss may be caused by a fungus, a bacterium, thyroid problems, shifting hormone levels, etc., and the appropriate treatment is different for each cause. Starting a treatment without knowing the cause of the problem is not wise and could be dangerous. For example, minoxidil can actually make some kinds of hair loss worse. If you want to do something about your hair loss, the first step is to find the cause.

Mintop oil
Date: 10/23/2011
Hello sir, i want to know very important thing about mintop oil that is it dangerous for eyes waiting for response i am using mintop oil rite now.

Ravi

AskDocWeb: The product information for the active ingredient (minoxidil) says to keep the medicine away from the eyes, nose, and mouth. If you should accidentally get some in those areas, flush the area thoroughly with large amounts of cool tap water. Getting it in your eyes can cause painful irritation, red, bloodshot eyes, swelling (puffiness), and possibly dark circles under the eyes.

Numbness in fingers
Date: 10/23/2011
Hi I am using coverit 5% for last one month n im feeling numbness on my hand’s finger so plz sugeest should i use it or should stop using it….wht should i do for numbness of my fingers?

Ashu

AskDocWeb: According to the Mayo Clinic, when too much is absorbed through the skin it may cause one or more of the following side effects:

  • numbness or tingling of hands, feet, or face
  • blurred vision or other changes in vision
  • chest pain
  • decreased sexual ability or desire for sex
  • difficulty breathing
  • fainting
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • flushing
  • headache
  • lightheadedness
  • rapid weight gain
  • swelling of face, hands, feet, or lower legs

If you notice any of the above or other side effects that concern you, check with your doctor.

Is it normal?
Date: 10/24/2011
I’m 22 male. I’ve been using minoxidil-5% with 1mg Propecia for 3 months. The thing is that i notice significant regrowth on my hair-line and the temples(which is a bit surprising) but no regrowth on the vertex area. have flaky skin, lots of peach fuzz. is it normal?

Majid

AskDocWeb: That is surprising as the effect in those areas is typically reversed. That is, the hair growth typically appears on the vertex and not on the hairline. Hopefully you will be able to report back on what happens after giving it another 3 months.

Throat swelled and painful
Date: 10/30/2011
I used Minoxidil yesterday on my scalp. I take Armour Thyroid for hypothyroid condition. Within a short time, my throat swelled and was very painful as it was before I started treatment with Armour Thyroid. My head hurt and I found it hard to swallow. Is there any documentation about this kind of interaction?

Katrina

AskDocWeb: Our data does not show a drug interaction between Armour Thyroid and minoxidil. However, swelling of the throat and difficulty swallowing are listed as rare side effects of minoxidil that should be reported to your doctor.

Worried about my hair
Date: 11/5/2011
My name is Sunny and I am 21 years old and my problem is hair loss, about two and half years. So I am worried about my hair. My hair is very thin. My skin is oily and plz suggest a good diet which help to inc. hair quantity in my scalp and suggest vitamins also and I am using minoxidil 5% also.

Sunny

AskDocWeb: You need to understand that if you were born with fine, thin hair, your diet will not give you thick hair no matter what you eat. However, a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of growth-promoting nutrients can make a difference in how long you keep what you have now. We don’t have a specific diet for those suffering from hair loss so we put together a page about what the experts say about diet and hair loss.

Manexil gel and Finabald
Date: 11/11/2011
Hi sir… I am 25,am experiencing male pattern baldness from almost 2 years, the doctor has prescribed me to apply Manexil gel (5 %) only once a day that is only during night and to take a tablet of finabald (1mg) daily during night..i work in software firm so i always be in front of PC And will be working in AC.. will this effects in the increase in hairfall? Can i apply any kind of oil during the treatment?

Rajesh

AskDocWeb: Your working environment would not seem to be a factor in the rate of hair fall. However, that does bring up a reminder of one of the areas of research that we are monitoring. That’s the biological effects of pulsed electrostatic fields. It’s called Electrotrichogenesis (ETG) and involves the stimulation of hair follicles on the scalp. The treatment was developed by Canadian company and is documented to have a 96% success rate as published in the International Journal of Dermatology. In a recent peer reviewed published report, it was also established that ETG can help chemotherapy patients retain their hair during treatment. So far their testing has been limited to a small number of participants but the idea is intriguing.

Mixing oil with the treatment is not recommended but using oil the next morning should not cause any problems.

Can we stop using minoxidil without losing hair?
Date: 11/13/2011
I m using minoxidil topilacl solution 2% after consulting with a dermatologist…because I have a hair loss prob .. just have a query, can we stop using this solution after 2-3 months without loosing hair.

Shweta

AskDocWeb: The short answer is no. If you read the package insert you will see that when minoxidil is discontinued the hair starts falling out worse than before you started using the product. That increased hair loss continues until all the benefits are gone. Within 12 months of discontinuing you lose all the benefits that you gained from using it.

Dualgen 15 No PG
Date: 11/17/2011
Hi, I am Hussain, 31yrs old, I lose a lot of hair and getting bald on the top of scalp and front side and I have dandraff and itchi scalp. I have heard that Dualgen 15 No PG (Minoxidil 15% w/ 5% Azelaic Acid solution is giving a good result. Please give me a advice for my Problem. Thanks.

Hussain

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately there are no “double blind human studies” comparing the effectiveness of the higher strengths of minoxidil (12-15%) to the traditional strengths (2-5%). We do know that the higher strength products produced more unwanted facial and/or body hair growth as well as producing more side effects. In the USA the Food and Drug Administration has limited the strength of minoxidil to 5% because of unwanted side effects. Your best bet is to consult with a dermatologist and let them choose your treatment.

No results
Date: 11/19/2011
I have been uring minoxidil 5% pilgro solution for 5 months and now using mintop forte 5% for 2 months neither hair fall stops nor new hair grows. What to do? Plz help me?

Samir

AskDocWeb: We would have expected to see at least some results after using it for five months. Unfortunately there is no product on the market that works for everyone. Have you consulted with a dermatologist to determine the cause of your hair fall?

Coverit-5% instruction page
Date: 11/21/2011
How to use coverit-5% I have lost almost 50% hair, my age 24 now I’m going 2 use coverit now tell me how I can use and what amount. Actually I lost the instruction page.

Bikash

AskDocWeb: Minoxidil is sold under various brand names like Mintop, Tugain, Coverit, Morr etc. and the directions for applying it appear to be much the same. In general, the scalp and hair must be dry when it is applied once in the morning and then again at the evening. Typically the amount used is 1 ml or half a capful. This is done twice a day and must be left on for about 4 hours. Remember that this product is flammable so stay away from open flames.

After stopping Mintop
Date: 11/26/2011
I had been used mintop lotion for 4 months. It gave me good results, but after stopping using this i notice that my hair became again thin..and many pimples on my face and my scalp was itching more and more….y?

Ambica

AskDocWeb: Losing more hair after you stop using Mintop is to be expected. This product works only as long as you use it. When you stop using it, you lose the benefits. That means the hair that you would have lost had you not used the product falls out. At that point you are pretty much right back where you started.

Mintop or Topgain?
Date: 11/27/2011
I am suffering from hair loss. i want to know which is best, mintop forte (foam or lotion) or topgain 2%. which one gave me best results?

Rohit

AskDocWeb: We don’t see that it makes much difference. Both Mintop and Topgain contain the same active ingredient, which is minoxidil.
