Hair falling out from the sides
Date: 11/29/2011
Hey I’m 21 years old and I have been using minoxidil topical solution USP 5% for about 2 weeks on my crown area. I have hairloss on my frontal and crown area before this. Now I see hair also falling out from the sides. Before I started using this the hair on my side never fell out, is this a bad sign?

Romeo

AskDocWeb: It may be a bad sign but you would have to check with your doctor to find out for sure. The patient information for minoxidil says to “Tell your doctor if your hair loss continues for more than 2 weeks.”

Gray hair turned yellow
Date: 11/30/2011
I have been using Minoxidil 5% for some time and it works great but turns my gray hair very yellow. What can I do to get rid of the yellow?

Doug

AskDocWeb: There seems to be only two options for dealing with the change in hair color caused by minoxidil. You may not like to hear them but one is to discontinue using the product and the other is to use hair-coloring dye. Maybe some smart manufacturer will come out with a combined product that has both minoxidil and hair dye in it but we haven’t seen it yet.

5% Minoxidil
Date: 12/3/2011
I am 78yrs old and have used Minoxidil for maybe 15yrs. It seems to have stopped working as I do not see much in the way of new hair. I recently bought 3 bottles of 5% by mistake. What is the problem with women using the larger dose? I have not had any problems with the 2% product. I am aware of the phases of hair growth and loss and resting. My hair is now quite thin but it covers my scalp. There is no patchy hair loss, nor has there ever been. What is the jeopardy for women using the 5% dose?

Patricia

AskDocWeb: The stronger formula has been reported to cause the growth of unwanted facial and body hair. That doesn’t happen to everyone but it occurs often enough that there is a warning about it in the patient information for 5% Minoxidil.

Blue about hair loss
Date: 12/4/2011
Hello sir, I’m a 20 year old guy. I have a hair loss problem which is inherit. For this, I have been using Hair4u 2% minoxidil & Aminexil topical solution with Finax tablate since January 2011. Throughout this period have experienced that hair fall was minimized before July-August period. Then I started my hair falling down but I continued. And it stopped again after some period. Now its December, if I see my head now and compare with the situation in last year December then of course I have got hairs on my back side but despite of using this treatment I have loosed some in my front area specially sides. Nowadays I’m experiencing a very rapid hair-fall and I’m finding myself sitting in blues. Please tell me why it has not been stopped completely despite of using throughout whole year?

Girish

AskDocWeb: The sad fact is, Minoxidil doesn’t work for everyone and neither does Finax. It sounds like you might be in the group of people for which they don’t work. Why it works for some and not for others is still unknown. If those doing research on new products for hair loss can discover why that occurs it may lead to better products.

Pilomin-2
Date: 12/4/2011
Thanks for the information you have given on this site. I too have a query -Last week doctor has prescribed me pilomin-2 as i am facing hair fall but also my hair quality has also gone poor. Would this product be ok for me, I am also worried about the side effects of Pilomin-2 as it grows hair to unwanted area like forehead, neck also. please suggest me should i continue this or I go to any other doctor?

Priyanka

AskDocWeb: The active ingredient in Pilomin-2 is Minoxidil and you can read about the side effect here. The “2” means that the solution strength is two percent. Although stronger formulas have produced unwanted hair growth on areas other than the scalp, most patients have no side effects with the 2% formula.

Mintop 10% foam and finapecial
Date: 12/8/2011
Hello sir, I am 28 year old guy. I have been losing hair since 8 years in a very slow fashion. Recently I consulted a doc who prescribed mintop 10% foam and finapecial. I have been using it for 1 month now. But I see more hair fall (generally thick hair) while shampooing and during sleep. The doctor has told the all these thick hair will grow back. So pls tell me is it normal or is there any shedding period if we use these medicine.

Amit

AskDocWeb: An initial period of shedding is not unusual. This has been reported with every topical hair loss product. In most cases, but not all, that hair does grow back. Tell your doctor if your hair loss continues for more than 2 weeks.

Unwanted hair
Date: 12/11/2011
Hi, I am 32 (woman) and have been using minoxidile 2% for 2 months ( I put more than the doctor recommend). I have started noticing unwanted hair under the eyes (upper part of the cheeks) and all over my face. I want to know if stopping the medication would cause the unwanted hair to go away? Because I stopped using it since one month but nothing change!!! the unwanted hair is still on my face….please help me.

Ram

AskDocWeb: Most places will tell you that the unwanted hair will go away but what they don’t tell you is that it may take several months, for some up to 6 months or more. If you want to speed this process you might want to check out a hair growth inhibitor such as Vaniqa.

Hairmax laser comb
Date: 12/11/2011
I’ve been using minoxidil5% nd finasteride for few years nd its doing wonders, just want to know if I use hairmax laser comb will it bring any more improvment. Secondly I apply hair oil after an hour of applying minox at night is it fine. Thanx for your reply.

Nadeem

AskDocWeb: While the idea of using a laser to help grow hair is fun, so far the evidence of its effectiveness is lacking. The only study we were able to locate showed that it doesn’t work very well. So what if it produces dense hair growth for one percent of those who use it and moderate hair growth for 22%? That still leaves most people wanting more.

Complications from minoxidil
Date: 12/16/2011
I was given 6% minoxidil following a hair transplant to use once daily. I started to get episodes of left chest heaviness/pain and up into my jaw and left arm, along with unusual fatique, lightheadedness, and a persistant feeling of uneasiness. I notice wrinkles in my forehead and under my eyes- along with eye puffiness and I looked years older in a short period of time. (I had previously always been complimented on how young I looked, and what beautiful skin I had- no wrinkles.) I had only used the medication for two months, when I finally realized that it was the likely cause of my sudden un-wellness. The symptoms are persisting, still two weeks after discontinuing the medication.

I feel my body has aged 15 years- with fatigue and shortness of breath, vision blurring, and persisting cardiac symptoms. I am now having to undergo all sorts of heart tests and to take medications for the heart symptoms caused by this miserable drug. No I would never recommend this drug to a friend or enemy! Stay away from this drug.

Hirsutism – unwanted hair growth
Date: 12/16/2011
I am a woman who used minoxidile for two months and now I have a beard, a moustache, hair on my forehead (dark hair) and even my ears!!! My Gynecologist told me it will not go away there is nothing to do about this problem, because hirsutism when it come, it stay!!! But I haden’t this problem before! I started having this problem when I used minoxidile! So I don’t know what to do should I wax it or just wait maybe this hair goes away! I stopped using minoxidile for two months but nothing change!!! The unwanted hair is still on my face. I am afraid and I want my face back! Please give me a solution but I don’t want to use laser on my face!! Please help me thank you.

Yara

AskDocWeb: “Hirsutism” is the excessive hairiness on women in those parts of the body where terminal hair does not normally occur or is minimal. It is a symptom rather than a disease and may be a sign of a more serious medical condition. Fortunately for you your gynecologist is not a dermatologist. The treatment for your excessive hair growth depends on the cause. While it may be caused by minoxidil it also has other possible causes. Here are a few of them:

  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, in turn mostly caused by 21-a hydroxylase deficiency
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Insulin resistance
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome, abbreviated PCOS, (the most common)
  • Obesity: As there is peripheral conversion of androgens to estrogen in these patients, this is the same mechanism as PCOS.
  • Stromal Hyperthecosis – in postmenopausal women
  • Tumors in the ovaries or adrenal gland (cancer)
  • Use of drugs like Tetrahydrogestrinone or minoxidil

If the excessive hair growth was caused by the use of minoxidil it could take several months for the excess growth to stop. If you want to speed that process you might want to check out a hair growth inhibitor such as Vaniqa.

Unwanted hair growth, acne and Diane 35
Date: 12/19/2011
Hi, thanks for this wonderful website. I used minoxidile for one year I finished up with a beard and hair in my ears, a forhead full of hair I mean a black dark hair and acne, even my hand it’s full of hair. I waited 3 mounths but nothing has change! My doctor told me do not wax it or touch it will go away, but nothing has change int”l now. I started taking DIane 35 to help me reduce this ugly facial hair. My question is: could Diane 35 help? And when I stop it could the facial hair come back? I am in very depressive situation. Help!

Rania

AskDocWeb: If the unwanted hair growth was caused by minoxidil it could take several more months to go away, with or without treatment.

If the unwanted hair growth is hirsutism then it is probable that Diane 35 would help. Diane 35 (Dianette) contains two active ingredients, cyproterone acetate and ethinylestradiol. This combination of medicines is effective for hirsutism but it is not an overnight remedy. In one study of patients with hirsutism, about 15% of patients reported improving after 6 months and 90% were happy after 36 months. These treatments only work while they are being taken. They do not cure the underlying cause. If treatment is discontinued the hirsutism may recur.
