Subj: Minoxidil 5%

I see all of the notes regarding unwanted hair growth (face, ears etc) using Minoxidil 5%. I am using both Propecia and minoxidil 5% (just started) and, being aware of these issues, am careful to get the Minoxidil only on the areas I want it and I wash may hands after application. My question is, when I work out my head will sweat and run down my face, will this cause the Minoxidil to also run down my face leading to the same problem others have???

AskDocWeb: The Minoxidil would be diluted by the perspiration so it wouldn’t have the same affect as it does on the scalp.
Subj: Oily skin and painful pimples

I’m 23, losing hair since I was 20, Mine is a oily skin, and my scalp and hair also becomes very oily, sticky. There are situations where people ask me whether I have applied any oil. I haven’t used any oil for last 5 years. I find lot of painful pimples on my shoulders and back, even on my scalp. They are bit painful. I have consulted the dermatologist, he suggested me mintop 2%, I have used it for 5 months but it becomes more oily but no result. I used to feel more drowsy when using mintop lotion not so active. I have stopped using it and now taking finpecia daily one tab from last month. Does this stop hairfall and promote growth? Is it advisable to use finepecia rather that mintop lotion?

I want to know, do the side effects of minoxidil, 2% stops after discontinuing its use. How many days does it takes for its side effects to stop. Please answer me. I am waiting for your response?

I have used Mintop 2% lotion for 6 months but my hair got more thinner. My scalp becomes oily within 2 hours of hair bath, is it advisable to use finpecia tablets

I used a treatment containing 3% minoxidil. After 2 months I noticed increased facial hair growth, first across the forehead, then along the side-burn area, soon after that over the cheek and down the sides of the neck. Also the skin on my face and neck has become extremely dry and sensitive. These side effects have continued to worsen despite ceasing the use of the treatment 12 weeks ago. What can I do?

AskDocWeb: The FDA says that even with continued use, hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks. There is not much you can do other than to wait it out although other readers would appreciate it if you would let us know how long it takes to get rid of the unwanted hair growth.
Subj: Minoxidil for women

I’m a woman, 42. Since 1,5 year the hair on my scalp is gradually thinning, although I have never noticed a major shedding. I’m using Minoxidil since 10 months, first 4%, since 2 months 5%. I’m tolerating it well, it does not irritate my skin but the thinning keeps going on! Is it possible that Minoxidil makes things worse for me? Should I stop with it? The problem is that I don’t know if stopping will not make it even worse.

AskDocWeb: It is possible that you have build up a tollerance for this drug and if that’s the case then continuing would be a waste of time and money. In large clinical trials hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks. We suggest you try an alternative like Nisim Biofactors.

Subj: Minoxidil Vs Propecia

I am 33 years old, male, and have several questions about the use of Minoxidil. I recently went to my dermatologist about hairloss. My father and brother both have it and I have been noticing that my hair line has receded a bit over the last couple of years. My doctor told me to use Minoxidil. He didn’t even suggest Propecia. When I asked him about Propecia, he really seemed to feel that Minoxidil would be just as good. So my questions are as follows; have people found results when using Minoxidil for a receding hairline (I know the box says may not see results in that area, but has anybody experienced different?)? Does Minoxidil prevent hair loss like Propecia is seeming to do? And for the application of Minoxidil, I understand that you must apply it when your hair is dry, but what if my job causes me to sweat alot, will that be a problem for the effectiveness of Minoxidil? AskDocWeb: Minoxidil will not work as well as Propecia but then it has fewer side effects also. The problem with Minoxidil is that the regrowth of hair has not been shown to last beyond 48 weeks. Sweat has not been shown to affect the effectiveness of Minoxidil.

Subj: Sudden hair loss

I have read numerous times on your website that you would not recommend minoxidil for alopecia areata. Could you please tell me why this is? I had sudden hair loss (3 smooth patches of hair) which may have been caused by a fungal infection. I am now using minoxidil 12.5% and Azelaic acid. Do you think this will be beneficial in growing back the hair, if not could you please explain why? Thank you,

AskDocWeb: We suggest you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. They say not to use it if your hair loss is sudden and/or patchy. Hair loss due to a fungal infection may take a long time to grow back in and it may not be as thick as it was before so it could still be noticeable. At that dosage we would be concerned about side effects so be on guard.

Hi, I’m 30 and my hair is starting to get thinner at the front, some people tell me they can’t notice any difference but I am sure of it. I don’t want to cut my hair short. Would you recommend minoxidil?

AskDocWeb: The only way we recommend Minoxidil is to use it short-term to help get your hair started growing again but not by itself. Use it with a long-term hair loss product like Procerin or Advecia.

AskDocWeb: Avoid getting it on areas where you don’t want hair to grow. If it gets on your forehead, ears or neck you may get unwanted growth in those areas.

I have been using minoxidil for 2 years once a day and I saw good results. I will be traveling for 2 weeks what happens if I don’t use it for 2 weeks and then get back to minoxidil?

Hi Sir, My name is Abdul staying in India (Bangalore). My problem is that my hair has become very thin and I have lost some hair. Whenever I apply Oil to my hair my hair is so thin that I lose lot’s of hair. Is there any way how I can regain back my hair and reduce further hair loss. One of my friends told me that by using Mintop Oil (DR Reddy’s) will stop the hair fall and helps in regaining the hair. Can I use 2% or 5% mintop oil. Kindly suggest me a remedy please. Thanking You

AskDocWeb: The problem with using hair loss products with Minoxidil in them (either 2% or 5%) is that the hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks. Before you get involved with more expensive treatments, we suggest you use a shampoo that supports hair growth, like Nisim Biofactors.

hi, I am a 58-year-old female, and I’ve had very thinning hair on the top of my hear for several years–my dermatologist advises it is a male-pattern baldness. I’ve been using minoxidil 5% since Feb,2006, and it’s a miracle–my hair looks fantastic! The dermatologist thought I’d need the 5% since I’ve had the condition for so long. Everybody comments how great I look! I use generic minoxidil – I’m from Toronto and it’s only available by Rx here, therefore very expensive. So my dermatologist recommended I buy the Minoxidil OTC in the US, so I run to the States every 6 months and buy it at Costco, and now after seeing the results, many others are doing the same. My problem is that, suddenly, my scalp is VERY itchy, and driving me crazy! I’ve tried olive oil, dry-skin cream. Cortisone cream, antihistamine cream on my scalp, and antihistamine tabs(Rx-Reactine 20mg). I’m also on Hormone Replacement (it’s called FEM HRT here-estrogen and prog). I wash every few days, Do you have ANY suggestions for me? Help! Also, what is this I hear about the product possibly not working after a couple of years? Anything I can do to prevent this? Also, does the 2% work as well? Thank you,

AskDocWeb: If you have build up a tolerance for the Minoxidil, and that’s what it sounds like, then it doesn’t matter how much you apply, it won’t work. And the 2% does not work as well as the 5%. You should speak to your dermatologist about this just to make sure it isn’t another problem. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
