Subj: Receding hairline
Date: 12/13/2006
What is the best option for a receding hairline, and do work out supplements (creatine, no2) show an increase in hairloss? I started taking the rogaine foam but have no balding on the crown in the hopes it will stop the receding hairline and prevent balding on the vertex.

Shawn

AskDocWeb: Sorry Shawn, for what you describe, no product works well enough on the hairline for us to recommend it. The most promising approach to date is the combined use of three products, Rogaine, Procerin and Nisim Biofactors shampoo. Because people seem to develop a tolerance to Rogaine, it is only used to help get hair growth started but we do not recommend it beyond 48 weeks.

Subj: Excessive dandruff
Date: 12/13/2006
I am using monoxidil 5%, it cause me excessive dandruff, even when I finish my bath I see a white greasy level of shite dandruff followed by an excessive shedding due to that dandruff. How shall I control this symptom from monoxidil? Does using monoxidil alone without an anti-dht medication is helpful (since I tried propecia and it caused to me severe sexual dysfunctions)? Thanks a lot,

Ihab

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you are assuming that the excessive shedding is caused by the dandruff but that may not be the cause. The excessive shedding could be an indication that the monoxidil has stopped working. We suggest you use a shampoo that supports hair growth. We recommend Nisim Biofactors but if you find another that works well, let us know so that we can share it with others here.

Subj: Child swallowed minoxidil
Date: 12/15/2006
I want to know what the problem if my child accidentally swallow minoxidil, he is 2 years old, he made two sprays into his mouth after 1 hour he had drowsiness after 12 hours had fever? What can I do?

Barakat

AskDocWeb: Minoxidil is poison. If swallowed, you should contact a Poison Control Center right away. If you don’t have a Poison Control Center in your area, seek emergency medical assistance.

Subj: Minoxidil usage

I am a 29 years male that has started using Minoxidil five months ago. The product’s name is Ylox (Minoxidil 5%), one of the brands of it here in Argentina. I have taken pictures when I begun the treatment and then, four months after, I took a new set of pictures. Through this four months I have been applying three or four drops of the product to the scalp above the temples and I can say that it works. The are above my two temples it’s being populated by hair and I am regaining my hairline. I am a heavy pipe smoker, I know, and noted it on myself, that much of my hair loss is due to smoking so I am quitting soon. Besides, I am making no less than one hour of heavy aerobic exercise (skating) and I am on a vegan diet to reduce insulin levels also. I do not cut my hair for the last 5 years, each hair on my head is now about fifty centimeters long. The question I want to make is the following: I am not losing my hair in the crown area or other parts of the head, only in above the temples. But I note that the overall quantity of hair in my head is much scanty than, say, what it was ten years in the past. I want to start applying Minoxidil to my whole head. Question: having long hair is it advised to apply it to the entire head? Because if I start losing 50 centimeter hairs, when they grow again reinforced by the treatment they are going to by much shorter than the rest of the hairs in my head. Do you think I should use it in my whole head to increase the overall quantity of hair on it?

Nakula

AskDocWeb: You need to be careful to apply Minoxidil only to those areas where you want hair to grow. If applied over your entire head, there is a risk of getting it on your neck, ears or forehead, places you would not want the hair to grow.

I have been using minoxidil 5% for around 12 months. I notice the hair stimulation over my head but not as I expected. I have noticed many hairs grown back but still I can see my scalp clearly. They do grow back but after a particular period they again fall out. Still I’m losing hairs around 20 – 40 per day. The day when I wash my hairs in the morning I loose around 50. After they are completely dry my hair shedding stops almost around 95% for 2 days. But again after 2 days I start loosing 20 – 40 hairs. Also I feel my hairline is still receeding and I can notice it. Please help me so that my hairline stops receeding. I am really worried. Can you please suggest me what should I do?

John

AskDocWeb: About all we can suggest is that you use a shampoo that fights hair loss.

Subj: Female hair loss
Date: 12/28/2006
I have been on minoxidil for about a month for frontal hair recession (26 year old female). My hair loss consisted of breakage and then the hairs fall out. Since beginning minoxidil, this has spread to the rest of my head. I do not necessarily see ‘shedding’, but broken hairs. I have not been able to find anything that tells me if these broken hairs (about an inch long) all over constitute shedding, or if it is something that I should be more concerned about and stop use. I also have itching and/or tickling sensation.

Kellie

AskDocWeb: The broken hairs do not seem to be related to the use of Minoxidil and broken hair is not the same thing as shedding. The hair breaks when it gets brittle. That would seem to indicate the need for a good conditioner, hope that helps.

Question – why can’t women use 5% minoxidil? Thank you.

Michelle

AskDocWeb: The directions state specifically that women are not to use 5% Minoxidil. The safe usage of 5% Minoxidil by women has not been established.

Subj: Finesteride and Minoxidil
Date: 1/3/2007
Hello, I’ve been on a combination of Finesteride and Minoxidil for three years. I achieved very good results in the first year and since then things have stayed about the same – which I am not unhappy with. (I was practically bald on top when I started and I now have a reasonable covering that is generally described as ‘thin’ by others, but I’m pleased with it, as I would have been completely bald by now – Luckily I took photos throughout, so I only have to look back at the original ones to feel pleased with where I am now.) I apply the Minoxidil twice daily. However, I find the morning application a bit inconvenient i.e. greasy and occasionally itchy scalp, and I would like to stop it if possible. Do you think I will see hair loss again if I did this i.e. Minoxidil just in the evening and Finesteride? Thanks.

John

AskDocWeb: We have strong doubts about getting any effect from Minoxidil beyond the first year so you should not see any difference when you discontinue that morning application.

Subj: Minoxidil and DHT
Date: 1/13/2007
Does Minoxidil reduce DHT like Propecia does?

Josh

AskDocWeb: No, Minoxidil is a vasodilator. That means it expands the blood vessels which increases the volume of blood flowing through those areas where it is applied.

I am experiencing a receding hairline. It seems to be in my family genes. I am 34 but not upset of what my hair looks like right now, but I know that if I do nothing it will get worse. I don’t know if I want to start using minoxidil right now since I am not worried about growing new hair, but what can I do to keep what I have? I see you have mentioned a few products, like Nisim Biofactors and procerin. If I use those without the assistance of Propecia or Minoxidil, will they have any affect? Also, can I use the Nisim Biofactors mixed with another shampoo and conditioner? I use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner I like a lot and would like to keep using it if possible.

Andrew

AskDocWeb: We wouldn’t use another shampoo and conditioner with the Nisim products at the same time but you could probably use them on alternate days. Of course it would only be half as effective. Read more feedback about Minoxidil.
