Minokem and Hypothyroidism?
9/1/2012
Hi! I am using Minokem n for the first time, i really hope it is gonna work for me. I wanted to know does it also help with hair loss due to hypo hypothyroidism? I am shedding my front hair very badly, and also I have a very stressful job as a field engineer.
ANJU
AskDocWeb: The Minoxidil in Minokem has been reported to help with hair loss in those with thyroid problems but it does not work in all cases. However, it is worth trying. Note that some thyroid medications have hair loss as a side effect, which is something you may want to consider.

Troy
AskDocWeb: The amount of time it takes to grow new hair by using minoxidil varies from one individual to the next. It sounds like you may be one of those lucky few who respond very well to this medication. Good for you.
Vision loss?
9/5/2012
Me and my husband are prescribed to use topical minoxidil solution 2% and 3% daily twice daily (1ml) for hair loss, i heard that this medicine is affect on nerve system and cause for vision loss, is that true?, any one can give an advise, im relay afraid because we both have to use that for hair fall for a long time, is it is better to avoid that medicine? plz help me.
Mrs. V
AskDocWeb: A change in vision is listed among the rare side effects (less than 0.1%) of the pill form of minoxidil. How prevalent that side effect is for the topical form of minoxidil is unknown but the risk would seem to be less. The manufacturer cautions that men and women using minoxidil should immediately seek medical attention when experiencing any changes in vision. In animal studies researchers found that minoxidil does not enter the central nervous system. However, minoxidil does cause potassium channels to trigger impulses to cells in the nervous system. This is thought to regulate hormone secretion and stimulate hair growth.
Medications that interact with minoxidil
9/5/2012
Hi, I am using Minoxidil 5% and Spiro 100mg nightly for FPHL. My question is – are there any medications I can’t use while using the above? I am suffering severe hay fever at the moment and would like to use an antihistamine but I am not sure if it’s safe to do so. Can you please advise?
Velvet
AskDocWeb: There are currently no known drug interactions associated with the use of topical minoxidil. Although it has not been clinically demonstrated, there exists the theoretical possibility that absorbed minoxidil may lower the blood pressure in patients currently taking peripheral vasodilators. In vitro studies have shown that the use of paracetamol (a fever reducer) may inhibit the stimulation of hair growth by minoxidil. Other drugs for topical use such as tretinoin and anthralin/dithranol, which alter the stratum corneum barrier, could result in increased absorption of minoxidil if applied concurrently. Antihistamines are not known to interact with minoxidil.

Nauman
AskDocWeb: That combination stops the progression of hair loss in the majority of men (83%), and results in hair regrowth in over 65% of men. Most men start seeing results within 3 to 4 months. However, you should know that this is not a cure. These products have to be used continuously in order to keep the hair from falling out.

Abhishek
AskDocWeb: The course of treatment for hair loss products has no time limit. Long-term, that is probably their biggest disadvantage. You have to continue using the product or you lose all of the hair that the product helps grow. This is true for Mintop, finasteride, Provillus, and other treatments for hair loss. They do not “cure” hair loss they only “treat” it.
Which minoxidil for women?
9/10/2012
Hi I’m 50 female, which dose of minoxidil Should be used by me? Is it safe to use 5% or 10%? Plz reply! Regards.
Anna
AskDocWeb: In the USA only the 2% version is approved for use by women. The 5% and stronger solutions are reported to cause the growth of unwanted facial hair and the growth body hair on women. That is not something that most people find attractive.
No results

Hello I am using minoxidil 5% not every day but every second day. My doctor make a coctail for my hair with elocom(cortizon) hair tonic lotion and minoxidil and I mixed all of them together in a bottle and I put it on my hair. I want to ask you if it’s the right way because three years now I never see any results and the last year I had heartbeats and burn in my chest. Probably I put a lot and overdosis make damage please I waiting your answer thank you.
Stelios
AskDocWeb: It is surprising that your doctor continues to prescribe this beyond one year with no results. To continue with a treatment that doesn’t work after three years is unacceptable. In the USA we have consumer protection laws intended to prevent such things from happening. Please consider consulting with a reputable dermatologist.
