AskDocWeb: We can answer questions about side effects but for advice you need to consult with your local doctor.

While chlorine can turn your hair green and dry out and weaken hair strands, research has not linked this chemical to hair loss or balding.

Alopecie androgeno-dependante
Date: 6/7/2006
hi, can i use minoxidil if i have an alopecie androgeno-dependante and if i had already made keratine for my hair

Katia

AskDocWeb: Sorry Katia, we do not speak French. If your “keratine” refers to the hair straightening product currently gaining popularity, that is a controversy that has yet to be resolved. There is a concern about formaldehyde in those products. The EPA and the National Cancer Institute have identified formaldehyde as a carcinogen and in animal studies it’s been shown to cause cancers in the nasal linings of rats and other creatures. According to cosmetic guidelines and regulations, the amount of formaldehyde is supposed to be limited to .2 percent. That’s two tenths of one percent although there are reports of up to 20 percent formaldehyde being found in some hair straighteners. Not recommended.

Livon Hair Gain or Mintop Forte?
Date: 6/8/2006
which shows better results livon hair gain or mintop forte?

Ria

AskDocWeb: The active ingredient in Mintop Forte (minoxidil) has been clinically proven to stimulate the growth of hair. Unfortunately the ingredients in Livon hair gain tonic seem to be a secret. We see that as a red flag of concern. Why? Because those who have allergies have no way of knowing how the product might affect them. The advertising for Livon hair gain tonic claim results in 15 days and that is another cause for concern. Legitimate products for hair loss take months to work.

Stopping Topgain
Date: 6/8/2006
Hi, I am 33 female. I am using topgain since 7 years. In these years vi had no problem, delivered baby. But now I want to stop. Please tell me what will be the side effects. Can I slowly refuce dose

Archana

AskDocWeb: If you are talking about the product used to stop hair loss the only effect noted for discontinuing is the loss of the hair growth that the product stimulated. There may be an increase in hair loss over the following few months after stopping use.

Prabodh

AskDocWeb: If it produces the results you want without unacceptable side effects then why not continue using it?

How long does it take for hair loss to stop?
Date: 6/14/2006
Firstly,I would like to thank you for your valuable suggestions here. From the past 5months i have severe hair fall and visited dermatalogist, he prescribed me Dr.reddy’s mintop 5%. And now i am using it regularly from one week and i could see the difference where some of the hair started to grow but it seems my hair fall increased than before. how many days it will take to stop my hair fall.

Priya

AskDocWeb: The product data we have says that if your hair loss continues beyond two weeks you should contact your doctor.

Minoxidil 2% gel
Date: 6/15/2006
Minoxidil 2% gel i’m a 19 year old girl. and i was experiencing unwanted hairfall especially from front and my dermatologists adviced me to use this gel daily. Its been 15days now. how long should i use this gel even after getting good results…can i stop using it gradually after gaining hair? please let me know soon. and yes my doctor blamed that it was also due to skipping my food!!is it true???

Rish

AskDocWeb: Not eating a well-balanced diet is one of the known causes of hair loss. That can cause deficiencies in several vitamins and minerals that you need to grow healthy hair. If you do not get enough of the following it can cause hair loss and unhealthy hair:

  • beta-carotene
  • biotin
  • calcium
  • inositol
  • iodine
  • iron
  • magnesium
  • niacin
  • pantothenic acid
  • selenium
  • vitamin A
  • vitamin B12
  • vitamin B6
  • vitamin C
  • vitamin D
  • zinc

You should know that minoxidil is a growth stimulant for hair and, if it produces good results, that result is likely to be lost if you discontinue using it.

About something I read
Date: 6/16/2006
I read that hair grown by minoxidile will last for 48 weeks only then it will vanish, so will the shedded hair after 48 weeks grown by minoxidile will come back or not???

Ketan

AskDocWeb: The idea that the effectiveness of Minoxidil is limited to 48 weeks is not true. That is a generalization based on a statement taken from Drug Facts from the FDA, which says: “Hair regrowth has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks of continuous treatment in large clinical trials with minoxidil topical solution 5% for men.” The “48 weeks” is the length of time that Minoxidil was tested in the clinical trials. There is no clinical indication of what results you might expect after that because that remains untested in a clinical setting.
