Is it ok to use oil on hair?
Date: 4/5/2014
I am using a product called Formula hair regrowth for women. It is a topical solution that has 2% minoxidol and tretinoin in it that I spray on my head 4 times a day to regrow hair. However, it is drying out my hair so I have also tried using a lavender hydrating mist on my hair strands as well to keep my hair from having the fried look. I also want to use rosemary oil mixed with the lavender mist. Is that ok or will it counter act the effects of the Formula solution?

AskDocWeb: It is important to note that minoxidil needs to be absorbed through the skin of the scalp in order to be effective. When the product gets on the individual hair strands it has no effect on hair loss but may affect the texture of the hair. Those with long hair may want to minimize the amount applied to the hair while applying minoxidil to the scalp to minimize this affect.
The instructions for applying minoxidil say that it needs to dry completely to be effective. Applying oil to the scalp before the minoxidil is dry may reduce effectiveness. We have seen no evidence that applying oil to the hair after minoxidil has dried would have any effect on effectiveness.

AskDocWeb: Using more than the recommended amounts of either product may result in the loss of your sex drive and/or ability to perform sexually. Because both products are “treatments” they require continuous use to be effective. If you stop using them the hair loss will resume.

AskDocWeb: According to the Mayo Clinic, “Minoxidil should not be used 24 hours before and after the hair treatment procedure. Be sure to not double your doses of minoxidil to make up for any missed doses.”

AskDocWeb: We don’t give advice but do answer questions about possible side effects and effectiveness of these products.
Minoxidil is most effective for people under 40 years of age whose hair loss is recent. The original studies on minoxidil for FDA approval as a hair loss treatment were conducted on men between the ages of 18 and 50 years. It isn’t that the medication doesn’t work in patients outside that age range, it is simply that there is no data to prove how effective it might be for them. There are lots of guys over 50 who are using it.

AskDocWeb: In the USA the 10% topical minoxidil is not recommended for treating hair loss. Sometimes higher or stronger dose does not produce better results but it almost always increased the possibility for more side effects. From what we have read, if it doesn’t work within the first year it is unlikely to work for hair growth. Those who suffer from hair loss while in their early 20’s may want to have their thyroid checked.
