I have been using minoxidil for approx. 2 months now. I find that I am always feeling tired, is this a side effect of using minoxidil? Also, after the hair grows back is it possible to maintain it by using minoxidil every second day?
Sheri
AskDocWeb: Fatigue is not a listed side effect. According to the FDA, new hair growth with Minoxidil has not been shown to last longer than 48 weeks.
Subj: Restart usage of Minoxidil 5%
Date: 8/17/2007
I used Minoxidil 5% for about 2 years. There was a good improvement and the hair fall was well controlled. I have discontinued the usage for the past 6 months and the hair fall has increased significantly. Can I restart the usage? Will it give me the same benefits again and are there any significant side effects in restarting?
HKH
AskDocWeb: Yes you can restart, but it may not be effective after you’ve used it for so long.
Subj: Irritation or allergy
Date: 8/21/2007
I am Rajesh, working for a software firm. My age is 23 years and I started balding. So I had met a doctor who is really successful in hair transplantation. I haven’t got transplanted yet, but would be going for it a few months later. My query is that I met this doctor a long back around 10 months back and he suggested me to use Finax 1mg and Mintop (Minoxidil 5%). So I started off with Finax a 3 months back with which my hair growth was found to be better and really satisfying and my hair loss stopped totally, adding to this I started off with mintop (Minoxidil 5%) also i.e. around 20days from now. Since then there was no issue but since 3 days I have started irritation on my head and even allergy. Please tell me what to do now. Shall I consult my doctor back or else I shall stop using Mintop. Please reply me back on my mail id. Hoping for a positive reply from your side. With regards,
Rajesh
AskDocWeb: If you discontinue use until the rash goes away and then start again and the rash comes back, then you have probably developed a sensitivity to the Mintop. If that’s the case then you will not be able to use it again.
Subj: Minoxidil questions
Date: 8/30/2007
I have several questions: 1. As minoxidil caused shedding at the first use, will the new hair stay as long as the old one? 2. If the new hair does not grow again after 1 year, does it mean minoxidil kills my hair shafts? Thank you and regards.
Female 43 years old
AskDocWeb: On question 1, we don’t know. On question 2, no, minoxidil does not kill your hair shafts. It’s just that it hasn’t been shown to cause any new hair grow after 48 weeks. Your hair continues to grow at its natural rate.
Subj: Developed facial hair
Date: 8/30/2007
I tried using minoxidil for three months and I developed facial hair! Also, I had a life threatening illness before and I do not know how this will affect my over all health condition.
Maria
Subj: Any significant difference?
Date: 8/31/2007
I wanted to know whether there is any significant difference in using minoxidil 5%, 1ml twice daily versus 2ml once daily at night. Thanks and regards,
Abanish
AskDocWeb: Using twice as much once a day may be too much for your scalp. That would increase the possibility of irritation and burning which could appear as (and feel like) a rash or a chemical burn.
Subj: Sexual side effects?
Date: 9/1/2007
Rogaine does not cause sexual side effects, you (edited) idiots. Take that side effect off your list. That’s just what you need to do, scare people out of taking Rogaine, their only real option other than herbal scams and that clinically proven (edited) killer Propecia.
Dean
AskDocWeb: Foul language is not allowed here and has been edited out. Sexual side effects with the use of minoxidil (Rogaine) are rare but according to the Mayo Clinic it is one of the signs of an overdose. That is what happens when too much is absorbed through the skin.
Subj: It itches a lot
Date: 9/3/2007
I started using Minoxidil 5% a month ago. Initially, I had no problems but recently, it itches a lot after couple of hours in the area I applied, specifically when the same is applied in the evening. I keep my hair clean by washing everyday. Please advice.
Sudhanshu
AskDocWeb: You could be having an allergic reaction to the Minoxidil or it might be just a temporary sensitivity. You might try using it every other day for awhile and find out if it calms down. If it still happens you may have to discontinue use and try another product.
Subj: Head sweat
Date: 9/5/2007
Hi, I’m a 27-years-old male. I’m from Malaysian and I did when to UK (abroad) to study and work for like 6 years. When I was there, I notice that my hair become thinner and not mention hair drop. I did try some medication (herbs type) but it didn’t work. I recently move to Hong Kong and found that a product known as Regaine which contain 5% Minoxidil. I use Regaine shampoo too for my oily hair. Well, during this 4 months, I have notice baby hair growth + lesser hair drop (notice from shampooing my hair). Well, this is the good part BUT I don’t really know if during this application of Minoxidil will have any side effect that I have after using this product. Well, during sunny day, I usually don’t get much sweat or normal sweat. However, after using this product (AKA Regaine – 5% minoxidil), after some time, I do sweat alot on my head even (when) It’s not hot. Sometimes, there is no sweat on my body / armpit but my head sweat is like after taking a shower. It could happen where ever there is slight heat. I need to go to somewhere cool to stop the sweat. Any advice will be appreciated.
David
AskDocWeb: That’s a new one. Best you consult with a dermatologist.
Subj: Any recommendations?
Date: 9/8/2007
Hello! I’ve had hair loss occasionally, especially during summer time, for about 2, 5 years. Finastride used to work till this summer. For about 2 months, I’ve been using minoxidil additionally, but do not see any progress. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks. Note: My hair loss is androgenic.
Aria
AskDocWeb: Other than staying away from steroids about the only thing you can do is to try another product. Our current recommendation is Provillus but we’re always looking for something better.
Subj: Getting small smooth bald patches
Date: 9/10/2007

I have taken so many treatments and presently I am using minoxidil lotion but no results and still this disease is spreading. I am getting small smooth bald patches on all over the scalp. Shahid
AskDocWeb: Please consult with a dermatologist to find out the cause of your hair loss.
Subj: Hair fall
Date: 9/12/2007
I am 22, suffering from hair fall from 3 years, I am using “Duprost, A2Z” tablets…are they effective in preventing hair fall? Otherwise tell what are the effective products available.
Nani
AskDocWeb: Not sure what the “A2Z tablets” are that you are taking. If it is the Duprost that is made by Cipla (Geneic Dutasteride), it contains the same ingredients as Avodart(tm), the prostate medication. It too reduces DHT although we haven’t seen any clinical results for hair loss. You can find an overview of hair loss products here.
Subj: 10 years on Rogaine
Date: 9/13/2007
Ok, I have been using rogaine for about ten years right now. I am 31 years old. Recently I have had terrible heart pains, and fluttering of the heart and irregular heart beats. I honestly thought that I was having a heart attack at age 31. There was no reason for this I thought, I am in pretty good health. Now just by a chance, I had gotten off of Rogaine for about a month. After about a month I realized that I just felt better. My heart wasn’t fluttering as much, I had lost a little weight, and a lot of the numbness and joint inflammation I was experiencing went away. Then I laid off the rogaine completely, now for 3 months. The heart problems I was experiencing, fluttering and shooting pains, are completely gone. My heart is totally back to normal. A lot of the numbness and inflammation in my body is gone. It is my sincere belief that this was all a cause of rogaine.
On a much more serious note, my father was hospitalized last year, for having an autoimmune disease. He almost died, before getting diagnosed with churg-straug syndrome, I believe that’s how you spell it. Some of his symptoms were irregular heartbeat, inflammation of his body, neuropathy, and respiratory breathing problems. My father has been using rogaine for 15 years now. I am not saying that the rogaine was the cause of churg strauss auto immune disease. But I would bet my life that is why he experienced irregular heartbeats and some neuropathy. He is now on medications to regulate his heart, and many other medications and steroids for his autoimmune disease. I suggested to my father that the rogaine was the reason for some of his symptoms, and needed to get off of it. To this day, even on all of those medications, he still wants to use the rogaine.
My statement here has a lot of different angles. But my point is that rogaine is evil and should not be used. People are very self-conscious about their hair, I certainly know this. These same people are willing just to ignore the side effects for the little benefits they receive. I believe that some people just don’t even realize the side effects they are experiencing from rogaine, simply because your body gets used to the symptoms. I also don’t believe that the doctors know much about the side effects of rogaine. I asked a dermatologist about minoxidil a while ago. He recommended it to me. I noticed that he was bald and asked him if he had ever used it. He stated yes I did, for a day. The dermatologist had to get off of it because it immediately made him dizzy. Rogaine, minoxidil has effected my life in a personal way. I just don’t believe that people are recognizing symptoms, or if they even understand the nasty side effects of this. I would not mind hearing comments about this. I looked long term effects of minoxidil on Google, just to see if there was any chatter about it. Sure enough here it is. I felt that I needed to speak my mind on this topic. Thank you and god bless,
Leon
