Subj: Libido
Date: 3/25/2007
Ever since I have been taking nexium my libido is gone. Has anyone reported this as well?

Valerie

AskDocWeb: That is not a listed side effect of Nexium and no one has reported it.

Subj: Extreme hot flashes
Date: 3/27/2007
My mother has been taking nexium for almost a year and she has, within the last 4 months, started experiencing extreme hot flashes that seem to consume her torso. She has said that she actually feels like she is burning up from the inside out. Can this be a side effect of nexium?

Linda

AskDocWeb: Yes, it could be the Nexium. Hot flashes have been reported in a small number of cases (less than 1%).

Subj: Colonoscopy?
Date: 3/27/2007
I have just started taking nexium because my GP thought it would be a good idea. My problem originally started when another Dr. gave me a prescription that I had just told him I was allergic to. This caused my complete digestive system to completely stop for 4 months. I could eat but the food would only go into my stomach and stop and the only way to relieve it was with laxatives that turned it to liquid. My digestive system has now started working and I have no pain or acid reflux. My GP still wanted me to see a G/I. He found no permanent damage to my stomach except for a small amount of redness and prescribed nexium??? Though I have no pain. Now he wants to do a colonoscopy. Is this a money thing??? The nexium gives me headaches similar to my migraines, dry mouth, shortness of breath, sleepiness and a feeling of general fatigue. Should I seek another G/I.

Wesley

AskDocWeb: The colonoscopy is expensive but it can reveal problems that other tests can’t find. In order to find out what caused the problem, we would have the test done.

Subj: My Health care Provider is scary!
Date: 3/29/2007
I have a pill popping Dr. A pill is answer to all your needs ( only in her eyes )You go tell the Dr. you searched for info; she states don’t believe all that you read and look up aspirin you would not be taking that either. She don’t even believe in the pamphlet information that comes with your drugs she make up her own idea… and is not satisfied unless you do as she states only, your opinion as to how you are feeling is worth zilch! The weight gain was never mention (as my option – be fat or be healthy)…if you call all those types of side effects healthier!!! The time frame over 5 years has not been mentioned either. You have coverage there is no end to what you may be prescribed. Why is it the root of the problem is only directed to pill popping! No one has taken all these drugs at one time in the testing period. Never. A Dr. has no way to completely understand all the pills selling on the market today. Impossible! I want to thank this web site for the great information you provide, at least we can make our own judgements as what is ok to take and what’s not. I keep monitoring my own meds (I am always being given lots) bringing their symptoms to the forefront of my DR’s eyes.

Subj: Alternatives to Nexium
Date: 3/30/2007
I can’t find any info on alternatives to Nexium when you realize the gastrointestinal side effects of it describes exactly what I’ve suffered for 2 of the 3 years or so I’ve been taking it! Can you address this, please? Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Anne

AskDocWeb: If you are addressing treatments for GERD (GastroEsophageal Reflux Disease) the alternatives include Aciphex, Axid, Pepcid, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Tagamet, Zantac, and Zegerid.

Subj: Elevated blood glucose level
Date: 4/1/2007
I have been on nexium for about 6 weeks. I am experiencing dizziness and headaches but my blood glucose level have also become elevated and are now above 13 where previously they remained between 4 and 7. Is the nexium the problem?

Alex

AskDocWeb: Although it may seem like a possibility, no affect on blood glucose levels are listed among the side effects of Nexium. Don’t put up with thinking that it will get better because it may need medical attention. Please see your physician.

Subj: Finally two and two together

Subj: Irregular heartbeat?
Date: 4/10/2007
I’ve been taking Nexium for about 3 years. Can the use of nexium over the long term lead to an irregular heartbeat? Thanks,
Anthony

AskDocWeb: In less than one percent of users, tachycardia has been noted. That’s an abnormal condition where the heart contracts regularly but at a rate greater than 100 beats per minute. Better see your physician to see if you have a heart related problem. Have an EKG to start with.

Subj: Pain
Date: 4/14/2007
I’ve taken 20 mg of Nexium 2x daily for several years. I recently had an endoscopy which resulted in a diagnosis of chronic gastritis yet my GI has kept me on Nexium. I also gain weight easily and have pain around my left rib that follows into my back. Do these side effects sound like the result of Nexium. Thanks.

Virginia

AskDocWeb: A small percentage of users experience back pain (less than 1%) and 3.8% of users had abdominal pain.

Subj: Nexium
Date: 4/18/2007
I have been taking nexium for several years and my current doctor is aware of this. He has not said I should stop taking it, but I have heard this could be a problem. This page is very informative. I intend to print it out and take it to my doctor so he can review this with me. Thanks,

Joanne

Subj: Food poisoning/GI viruses?
Date: 4/21/2007
Nexium has helped my gastric reflux problems very well. I’ve taken it for more than 3 years. When I go off the medication heartburn returns within 1.5 days. Question- Twice in this past year I’ve gone on trips and have had stomach flu. It’s taken about a week to recover from the vomiting and diarrhea. Does Nexium make one more susceptible to food poisoning/GI viruses due to the lower acid content in the stomach? I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter. What should I do for future trips? Thanks.

Betty

AskDocWeb: Yes, stomach acid is a major defense mechanism against ingested pathogens. On October 27, 2004 the Associated Press reported that widely used heartburn and ulcer drugs such as Nexium, Pepcid and Prilosec can make people more susceptible to pneumonia, probably because they reduce germ-killing stomach acid.

Subj: Spastic colon
Date: 4/23/2007
I have always suffered a spastic colon. Since taking Nexium this condition seems to be alleviated unless I drink alcohol. Is this possible? I am 47 years old and have had the spastic colon as long as I can remember.

Ron

AskDocWeb: The term spastic colon is one of the many used to describe irritable bowel syndrome or IBS. Everything we have read suggests that alcohol will trigger an attack rather than alleviate one.

Subj: Samples?
Date: 4/25/2007
My husband and I have used Nexium in 2006 it worked for us. We are hoping your company would send us some samples at (address deleted). Thank You,

Nancy

AskDocWeb: Sorry Nancy, we have no products, this website is for consumer reviews.

Subj: Lump in the back of throat
Date: 4/26/2007
I’m experiencing the same symptoms as another user. Feeling extremely groggy, out of focus, kind of sick, with pale stool and constipation. I’m on day 3 of taking Nexium. You mentioned contacting my doctor in a few days. Exactly how many days should I give the medicine before throwing in the towel? Also, I was given it because of a lump I feel in the back of my throat that makes swallowing difficult. The doctor thought it may be acid reflux. There is a constant thick mucus only in the back of my throat. And sometimes, it makes me nauseous. I have no heartburn. The symptoms still persist. If it is acid reflux, how many days before I experience some sort of relief? Thanks for your help!

James

AskDocWeb: If it was acid reflux you should experience a change the same day. It sounds like you need to see a ear, nose and throat specialist.

Subj: Gastritis, esophagitis and dueodonitis
Date: 4/26/2007
I have just started taking nexium, and expected to take it for 3 months for gastritis, esophagitis and dueodonitis. How long does it take to work, and is will this help permanently get rid of the symptoms as I am only 20?

Fred

AskDocWeb: Nexium works fairly quickly reaching a maximum affect in about an hour and a half. It relieves symptoms but it won’t permanently get rid of them because it is not a cure.

Subj: 15 years on Nexium
Date: 4/30/2007
I have been on Nexium for 15+ years. I am now experiencing severe degenerative disc problems; I am 68 years old and have been very active; walking 2+ miles per day. Are there any studies on bone problems after long term use?

Roger

AskDocWeb: Sorry, there are no long-term studies available.

Subj: Are we sure?
Date: 5/1/2007
I have the ringing in the ears sometimes as well….are we sure it has nothing to do with nexium? And I have been having really bad cramping all over my stomach and goes to my back…I have anxiety but I’m not sure if it is just me or nexium causing me to feel zoned out…please answer my questions and be truthful, thanxs,

Cherie

AskDocWeb: Less than one percent of Nexium users reported tinnitus, that ringing in your ears and stomach cramps but none have reported anxiety. With so much going on, you might want to consult with a gastroenterologist.

Subj: Hepatitis C
Date: 5/3/2007
I do my best to let everyone know that there are many drugs that need to be avoided if one has Hepatitis C. Nexium is one of them. I have had hundreds of phone calls and emails from my clients who are successfully lowering their viral load and all of a sudden it is up millions of points. Many of them have one thing in common. They took Nexium, the purple pill you see advertised on TV for acid reflux disease.
This time it was Carolyn W. In October 2006 her viral load was 143.000 Carolyn’s doctor gave her a bag with 4 sample bottles of Nexium, 7 pills per bottle, 40 mg per pill. She took all 28 pills. She retested in December of 2006 less than two months later and her viral load was over 5.000.000 (FIVE MILLION). I have seen this well over a thousand times where only Nexium was taken. I also see this with Amoxicillin, Flu Shot, Hepatitis A & B vaccine, Viagra, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Serzone, Lexpro, Effexorxir, Wellbutrin S/R and many other prescription drugs.
Amoxicillin will raise the viral load millions of points with as few as three pills. The anti depressants raise the viral load slowly over time with a steady move upward. The Hepatitis A & B vaccine will raise the viral load millions of points and it will take 9 months to two years before it starts to come back down. The B vaccine will also damage your liver, raise your alt, AST and cause mercury poisoning. Viagra raises the viral load slowly and steady. You can take Zantac, an over the counter product; it works just fine and does not raise the viral load. Your doctor will not know this, will not believe it… I have observed over 100.000 people with Hepatitis C for over 9 years. I am certain about the information contained in this report.
