Subj: Tinnitus?
Date: 9/23/2007
I have been taking Nexxium for about 3-4 years to control my acid reflux, which it does. For 4 months now I have had a problem with stuffy ears. My ENT cannot find anything and my Dentist is not sure I have TMJ. I am at my wit’s end with this. I have just come across something that says Nexxium can cause earaches, tinnitus and a blocked eustachian tube. Could this be causing my problem and should I stop taking the Nexxium to see if it clears up?

SanDee

AskDocWeb: Less than one percent of Nexium users reported tinnitus but it does happen. Please check with your doctor before you stop taking Nexium. You want to avoid making things worse.

Subj: Rebound effect?
Date: 9/24/2007
I’ve been taking Nexium for about three years and recently was told it could cause you to gain weight which I have done, from 185 to 230 but I had quite smoking during this time also. So I just figured the not smoking was the cause. So I have stopped taking Nexium and I seem to be gaining weight at a fast rate 8 lbs in a week without any change in intake or exercise. My question is does Nexium have a rebound effect? I know that some people get headaches after they stop, any reported excessive weight gain after stopping? Any comments or insights

Jim

AskDocWeb: We have seen no reports of weight gain after discontinuing and no mention of a rebound effect involving weight gain.

Subj: Nexium and alcohol?
Date: 9/26/2007
What are the dangers (if any) of taking nexium while drinking alcohol?

Richard

AskDocWeb: There is no warning listed with Nexium regarding alcohol.

Subj: Yeast infections?
Date: 10/6/2007
Does Nexium cause yeast infections?

Nancy

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Medications that interact with Nexium
Date: 10/10/2007
Can you please tell me if nexium would effect my other medications. I am taking valium 2mg per day and sinequan 35mg per day. I have found that I have had to up my dose of valium as it feels like it is not working properly. I have taken valium for anxiety for ten years and have never had to adjust it much. I told my doctor that I thought the nexium was effecting my other medications but she didn’t think that was possible.

Cheryl

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t seem likely, the only medications we found that interact with Nexium were Warfarin, ketoconazole, iron salts, digoxin, pimozide, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin. There may be others so keep your doctor informed of all medications you are taking.

Subj: Very discouraging
Date: 10/10/2007
I have been on Nexium for about 2 years. Does not really seem to help the acid reflex but I do not have heartburn while on it. I have gained 25 pounds and can’t seem to get it off although I exercise excessively and carefully watch what I eat. I have never weighed this much in my life. It is very discouraging and depressing.

Subj: No More
Date: 10/13/2007
I have been on the “Medication Roundabout” for about ten years. I was diagnosed with R.A and tried everything my specialist suggested, but being an ultra sensitive individual I ran into trouble with almost everything. I ended up with ulcers and GERD (caused by the other meds!) For nearly 5 years I have been taking Nexium (under sufferance). Ten days ago I made the executive decision “No More”. Yes, the heartburn, which had not been well controlled came raging back, but I had a gastroscopy yesterday only to discover that the original ulcers were gone but the inflammation was chronic and they had to sit me up to do the test because of the amount of reflux during the test. I have however noticed over the past week that I feel more “Normal”, Less light headed, less breathless, less nauseous, and not one head rush for a week! I know that I have RA but I have had other non specific body pain which I don’t attribute to RA, that seems to have settled too. I know that something else will be needed for this GERD, but it will not be Nexium! I am hoping to shift this extra 10kilos that have arrived uninvited. I am taking the apple cider vinegar and will let you know how it goes! Greetings from Australia, and thanks for the opportunity to participate.

Subj: This drug is poison
Date: 10/14/2007
Nexium is a dangerous drug. You doctors shouldn’t be so lax in telling people of the side effects. Shame on you for buying into the drug company propaganda. Nexium causes terrible allergic reactions to sensitive people with allergies. How do I know? I am sitting here with swollen feet, a head to toe rash, and had to go to the ER the other day. This drug is poison, and should be taken off the market.

Subj: I feel like my esophagus is burning off
Date: 10/15/2007
Hello…I have had horrible side effects with Nexium. I went on after an endoscopy and I swear taking nexium was like eating glass, it hurt my stomach, my esophagus and back. I went off after a week but I had rebound acid for about another week — and now I feel like my esophagus is burning off. What does this mean?

Karen

AskDocWeb: That depends on what the results were of the endoscopy and what your doctor said. I hope you went in for the follow-up. These are symptoms that should not be ignored.

Subj: Lost feeling of fullness
Date: 10/16/2007
I have noticed a lot of subjects are about weight gain. When I have taken Nexium in the past I noticed I lost my feeling of fullness and so when I ate I never felt satisfied. I found that I would have to stop myself from eating more, even though I still felt hungry. Maybe this is why weight gain is a problem for some people. I am currently on a 14 day course (on day 4) of Nexium HP7 for H.Pylori Bacteria in duodenum (7 day course didn’t work), I am experiencing headaches, nausea & metallic taste. Is there anything I can do to ease side effects, does drinking more water help? Also if this doesn’t work, is there a stronger course available for H.Pylori.

Robyn

AskDocWeb: Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) is the cause of most ulcers. The bacterium is present in more than 90% of patients who have intestinal (duodenal) ulcers and in more than 80% of those with stomach (gastric) ulcers.

The most effective treatment regimen is called Twice-Daily PPI-Based Triple Therapy. It has a 90% cure rate from taking the following over 2 weeks of treatment.

  • Omeprazole 20 mg bid or Lansoprazole 30 mg bid
  • Clarithromycin 500 mg bid
  • Amoxicillin 1 g bid or Metronidazole 500 mg bid

After completing treatment, it is important repeat testing to ensure that the infection has resolved. This is typically done with a breath or stool test.

To relieve some of the side effects, it may be possible to make adjustments in the dose or timing of your medication.

Subj: Can anybody help?
Date: 10/16/2007
Hi, I have had GERD for about 2 1/2 years, been on Nexium for just over 12 months. The acid has reduced but I now have delay stomach emptying taking 97 minutes to half empty. Other symptoms are feeling, being sick after meals, very bad headaches, which consultant says is from the feeling sick, ulcers in the mouth and feeling very tired. I have been off work for the last 15 months tried to return but only managed a few days. I have now been referred to a professor at Queens Medical Centre Department of Digestive Disease. I am currently taking Nexium, Donperadome, Strong Co-Codramol and anti depressants because I am so down. Can anybody help?

Chris

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you are on the right track. The professor at Queens is a good start, just be patient.

Subj: Acid blocker?
Date: 10/16/2007
Is Nexium an acid blocker?

Dana

AskDocWeb: Partly, Nexium inhibits the secretion of stomach acid so that less acid is produced.

Subj: Nexium and vomiting
Date: 10/17/2007
My mom-in-law, age 87, started taking Nexium together with ativan and has just had her 3rd dose and is still vomiting after a meal. Is this normal and will it settle once her system adjusts to the meds? Thank you,

Barbara

AskDocWeb: Yes, vomiting is one of the side effects and is not uncommon.

Subj: Every other day usage
Date: 10/19/2007
I have been taking Nexium for several years and it has controlled my acid reflux. My doctor has told me that it is not recommended for long term usage. He wants me to use it every other day or to stop using it entirely. Do you know what the effectiveness of the medication is with every other day use?

Richard

AskDocWeb: It should work if your acid reflux isn’t too bad. Some people cannot miss one pill and others can, just wait and see what your symptoms are. If it doesn’t work out for you see a gastro specialist.

Subj: Ribs hurt
Date: 10/20/2007
My husband has been on nexium for about 2 years. Every time he takes it his upper right side by his ribs hurt really bad and no appetite. When he doesn’t take it he feels pretty good. Help me, he’s been to the Dr for the last 4 weeks initially they are going to run some test; ultra sound and upper GI series.

Barb

AskDocWeb: He needs to get those tests done, it’s the only way to determine what is going on.

Subj: Swollen legs, ankles and feet
Date: 10/20/2007
I have been taking Nexium 40MG for about 3 weeks. From day one my ankles, feet and legs are very swollen. Is this normal?

Deborah

AskDocWeb: No this is not normal at all. Please consult with your physician.

Subj: Pain under left rib cage
Date: 10/22/2007
I have been using Nexium 40mg for about 3 years now. I have had a pain under my left rib cage intermittently for about 2 years. I have had all kinds of tests done and nothing has been found. I am beginning to wonder if it is from Nexium. I also have developed tinnitis. If I miss my Nexium for even one day, I get severe heartburn, I can’t even drink water. My questions like others is, how do you get off this stuff without suffering from severe heartburn? Any suggestions?

Karen

AskDocWeb: You can’t just stop treating the condition. Please talk to your doctor about an alternative to Nexium and maybe a referral to a specialist. Read more feedback about Nexium.
