Subj: Gastroparisis
Date: 1/17/2008
I am a diabetic who is suffering from gastroparisis. I don’t want to take the medicines that are available for the nausea so I smoke marijuana for that feeling and use nexiun to control my gas and bubbles question does nexium promot matility. It seems to work for me acipex does not work as well and I prefer capsules over pills. Is there anything different about nexium that inadvertently affect food movement in the stomach. I never have heartburn or indigestion but before nexium I had debilitating days.

Thomas

AskDocWeb: Nexium does affect the movement of food through your system, in fact the most common side effect of Nexium is diarrhea (4.3% of Nexium users).

Subj: Burning mouth, lips & throat
Date: 1/20/2008
I have recently been diagnosed with inflamed reflux oesophagitis after an endoscopy who put me on Nexium 20 after being on Omeprazole 10mg for 2 months which worked for me although still had sore throat. After two weeks I had terrible burning mouth lips & throat syndrome and went off them and returned to Omeprazole 10mg. The burning has returned. 6 months previous I was on Lansoprazole which after 2 weeks again experienced burning mouth & throat. On both occasions burning mouth symptoms went after stop taking the drug but heartburn returned. Is the burning mouth, lips & throat an allergy to the drugs or acid reflux?

Sheila

AskDocWeb: It could be either one. You may have to see an ear nose and throat specialist to determine what is going on.

Subj: Side effects from long usage of Nexium?
Date: 1/20/2008
I have been on and off Nexium for many years – more than 5 years. The last three years, I seem to suffer from groin pain with hip pain, fatigue, and muscular aches and pain. Could any of this be a side effect from the long usage of Nexium. What are my options if I stop it, since the GERD immediately returns?

Marian

AskDocWeb: Fatigue is not a listed side effect of Nexium. The only pains listed as a side effect are headaches and abdominal pain. The alternatives include Aciphex, Axid, Pepcid, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Tagamet, Zantac, and Zegerid. Also you should know that your symptoms might be diagnosed to have a cause unrelated to GERD. Please consult with your physician about what might work best for you.

Subj: Gained 10 pounds
Date: 1/22/2008
I’ve been taking Nexium for a couple of months now. Everything has been better but I’ve gained 10 pounds and when I try to loose it with diet and exercise, it doesn’t seem to help. What should I do?

Connie

AskDocWeb: Talk to your doctor about what alternatives may work better for you.

Subj: Hiatal hernia and mild Barrettes esophagus
Date: 1/23/2008
I have been taking Nexium for four years, 40 mg twice daily. A life saver. I have a hiatal hernia and mild Barrettes esophagus. I have an endoscopy done every 18 mos. (Have had 3 so far), things look much better but still have mild Barrettes. We recently changed insurance carriers and found out after the fact they do not cover Nexium. My prescription is $376.00 a month. My regular MD prescribed Aciphex 20 mg once daily. This was done over the phone with the pharmacist. I pulled Aciphex up on the Internet to find out it should only be used for 4-8 weeks. My ear, nose and throat Doctor and my Gastrointestinal Doctor have both said I will have to take the Nexium for the rest of my life, (40 mg 2 times daily), due to the Barrettes and the hiatal hernia. The Aciphex 20 mg doesn’t seem to be the right stuff for me. What would you recommend? Most respectfully submitted,

Leif

AskDocWeb: Of course you can get a second opinion but this isn’t the place to do that because we don’t give medical advice. The purpose of this website is to share information about side effects. If you want a professional opinion ask your question here.

Subj: Prelief hair loss?
Date: 1/24/2008
I take Prelief several times a day for IC bladder disease for helping clear up acid, etc. I was wondering if Prelief could be causing my hair loss on top of my head. Have been through extreme stress for the past six months. Thank you.

Susan

AskDocWeb: Prelief has not been linked to hair loss. It is more likely that your hair loss is stress related.

Subj: Given this medication and not told why
Date: 1/29/2008
After reading these comments, it seems that Nexium is used mainly for GERD. How is one diagnosed with this? Is there any other reason Dr. may prescribe? I had an ulcer but I believe it to be gone now. I was in hospital when they started giving to me, and I think this was only because they saw in my chart that I was on it some months ago. I think this is serious if you are just given this medication and not told why or unable to find the reason why? It has seemed to help some of the gargling in my stomach, but I don’t want to stay on it too long. I like herbs better. Is slippery elm comparable?

B

AskDocWeb: While slippery elm does provide some relief for GI inflammatory disorders it is not comparable to a proton pump inhibitor like Nexium. If you ask your doctor, they will tell you why they are prescribing a medication. That is part of their job as a doctor.

Subj: Chronic mild gastritis
Date: 1/30/2008
I have been taking 40 mg. of nexium for the past 4 months. I was diagnosed with chronic mild gastritis and was given this medication. This drug overall has worked really well. Though what I have noticed that I started getting sick alot more often than I use to. About a year ago I would only get sick 4 times a year. Now I’m getting sick 2-3 times a month, and the last month of using it I noticed that I have been having alot of flare ups. The flare up pain is relative to the pain that u get after taking nexium in the morning and having that burning sensation you get before eating something. So I would get these pains throughout the day, I would have to take Tums, and that would usually work but lately it hasn’t been. So as time went on and my insurance sucks ass, I ran out of nexium. This is day two of no nexium and I’ve been taking prilosec otc 20 mg. which I have taken before nexium treatment and it seemed like it didn’t help at all after a while. These past two days I haven’t been getting “flare ups” (referring to the relative burning feeling nexium gives u in the morning before eating) Weird huh. Any input from anyone? And has anyone been instructed by the doctor to cut down on medication? If so please tell me how often I should start taking nexium again? (once I get a hold of the damn expensive drug)

Jen

AskDocWeb: It has been noted that stomach acid kills many harmful bacteria and that suppressing this germ killing acid with drugs may make the body more hospitable to such germs.

Subj: Dizziness and tinnitus
Date: 2/4/2008
I have been taking Nexium 40 Mg daily for about 5 years to control my acid reflux. I now have some intermediate dizziness and constant tinnitus. Can this be a result of the long-term use of Nexium?

Sharron

AskDocWeb: Several people have reported dizziness but it is not listed as an acknowledged side effect of Nexium. Less than one percent of Nexium users reported tinnitus but it is not just from long-term use.

Subj: Drug interaction?
Date: 2/6/2008
I just started taking Nexium yesterday which helped with the acid problem in my stomach. However, I am starting to develop a cold. Can I take over the counter cold medicines like Theraflu while I am taking Nexium? Is there any harm or drug interaction? Thanks.

Hanna

AskDocWeb: The only drug interactions we found for Nexium were with Diazepam, Digoxin, Iron salts, Ketoconazole, and Warfarin. It is especially important to check with your doctor before using these drugs with Nexium because the effects could be increased, decreased, or altered.

Subj: Nexium is killing me
Date: 2/8/2008
Nexium is killing me but I have heartburn to the point I have to have it — have been on it for 12 years. Have told the doctor time after time about my symptoms but they do not listen. My ears ring constantly–my stomach is so swollen–my joints hurt like hell–I have lost hair—gained sooo much weight–I was always a thin person until Nexium–have hives like crazy foggy mind and memory at times–

Lavonna

Subj: Pain in the middle of the night?
Date: 2/9/2008
I have been on nexium 40mg for 2 year. It was working ok, except I sometimes have pain and gas. I am quite happy to accept it. Recently, it not working at night, I have been waken in the middle of the night with very bad heartburn. Once the esophagus is burnt, the pain stay for a week. I then to liquorice root to relief the pain. It works very well. But what can I do to stop the pain in the middle of the night?

Wendy

AskDocWeb: Remember that it is okay to take antacids while on Nexium which may provide some relief for pain at night.

Subj: Mild lightheadedness and memory issues
Date: 2/10/2008
Hi – I have been on Prilosec and now Nexium for the past 11 years. I have Barrett’s and Crohn’s. Several years ago I started getting mild lightheadedness and memory issues. I have talked to my Gastrologist and my Primary Care Physician and have not found the cause. I was referred to a Neurologist and eventually referred to the Lahey Clinic in the Boston area. The only medication that seems to stop the lightheadedness and memory issues is Klonopin, an anxiety medication. This works but all my doctors agree I do not have an anxiety disorder.. I am starting to think the symptoms could be linked to the long term use of PPIs. Any thoughts from this form? Thanks…

Ed

AskDocWeb: Several people have reported memory issues and dizziness with Nexium. These are listed as side effects of Nexium (2008 PDR) but are limited to less than one percent of Nexium users.

Subj: Nexium and right dieta
Date: 2/19/2008
I took Nexium for 1 month and I start feeling better. I have changed my dieta: I eat fruit 1/2 to 1 hour before each meal, never eat fruit after meals it will cause acid reflex. Use in moderation: sweets, coffee and alcohol. Drink before meals and 1 hour after. Eat slow and chew food good before swallowing.

Anna

Subj: Bile reflux?
Date: 2/27/2008
Just started taking nexium for like 2 days now. My heartburn episode seems to be reducing but I have started experiencing some sort of bloatedness and indigestion. Could it be a side effect? I also have bile reflux? Is nexium good for bile reflux? Or just gerd?

Adeniyi

AskDocWeb: Although the primary purpose of Nexium is to reduce the production of stomach acid, it may also help reduce bile reflux. One problem that may arise is that reducing the amount of stomach acid may also reduce your ability to digest food. This could lead to a fermentation in the gut which causes gas, bloatedness and indigestion.

Subj: Diarrhea
Date: 2/27/2008
I have been taking some kind of drug for Acid Reflux for quite a few years. In the past few years my Gastro Intestinal put me on Nexium, until recently, I have done O.K., but lately I have had diahrea and asking if Nexium could be a side effect, while I am also taking Blood Pressure Medicine, Hydrazaline, Atacand, Toprol XL, Hytrin, Synthroid for my thyroid, Aggrenox for circulation, Depakote for my Seizures.

Becky

AskDocWeb: Yes, diarrhea is one of the possible side effects of Nexium.
