Subj: Considerable weight gain
Date: 5/27/2008
Do all of the medications for GERD cause wght gian? I am on nexium and have put on considerable wght. Stopped premarin and did loose 8 lbs. without dieting.

Kathryn

AskDocWeb: Weight gain seems to be one of the side effects of using a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).

Subj: Diarrhea with pain and burning
Date: 5/31/2008
Hi, I am on my fourth day of Nexium. I am 20 years old and have had intense pain in my left side under my rib cage. This morning I awoke and had the sudden erge to have a BM. I was literally in the bathroom for an hour with horrible pain and burning in my lower stomach, I had diariah. Is this from the nexium or was I misdiagnosed or do you think I may have IBS?

Jennifer

AskDocWeb: Diarrhea and abdominal pain are listed as possible side effects of Nexium.

Subj: Feeling of something is stuck in my throat
Date: 6/3/2008
I have just started to take nexium (2nd day) it has helped the heartburn but the indegestion and the feeling of something is stuck in my throat is still there. Should nexium help with this as well or do I need to talk to doc about other medicine.

Chris

AskDocWeb: It would be wise to talk to your doctor about that feeling in your throat. It is suspiciously similar to a difficulty in swallowing which is a warning sign of trouble.

Subj: Going back and forth between constipation and diarrhea
Date: 6/6/2008
I have been on Nexium 3+ years- 40mg/day. I am 42 yr old male, about 80lbs overweight. Recently, I have decided to simply get healthy & get off med’s. My 1st & safest drug to remove was Nexium. I feel ok as long as I eat properly, and the slightest acid is cured with a Mylanta chew. My problem, however, is since coming off Nexium, I don’t have normal bowel movements. For the past 3 months, every bowel movement is pure diarrhea. Not just soft stool- more like liquid. If I eat a trigger food, and take Nexium, I then become constipated instead. Any ideas?

Tim

AskDocWeb: If you haven’t done so already, you may want to consult with a gastroenterologist. They may be able to help you sort this out.

Subj: Vitamin D
Date: 6/12/2008
I’m taking Nexium 40mg for past 6 years. Recent blood test showed my Vitamin D is very low, measurement is 16 instead of 80. Any relation to Nexium usage?

Chris

AskDocWeb: We’ve not heard about any problems with vitamin D in relation to the use of Nexium.

Subj: Thanks to the makers of nexium
Date: 6/19/2008
I’ve been taking nexium for about a month, now prior to that I was in such severe pain that at first it was thought to be a heart attack, now I’m only 32 so you can imagine my terror. Well after all the tests were done the doctor concluded that I had a torn chest muscle, and prescribed me a nsaid, so I took that then a bout a month ago I began to get severe tightening of my chest like someone was squezing the life out of me so I went back to the Dr. He said my heart sounded great. My lungs were clear. Then he said do you have heartburn, I said yes, I’ve had that most of my life, so he said I think you have a severe form of GERD. He gave me nexium and it seemed to work right away. I still have some trouble but not like before. I have totally changed my diet but I do cheat sometimes. I haven’t noticed the weight gain yet but I have noticed that somedays I am really tired, but that’s worth it to get rid of the chest pain and the heart burn, and the abdominal pain has almost completely subsided thanks to the makers of nexium, wish I had gotten on it sooner.

Subj: My stomach hurts almost all the time
Date: 6/20/2008
How does one get off of Nexium? It has resolved my GERD symptoms but since I also had a duodenal ulcer, I ended up staying on Nexium for a year. I have tried various strategies to get off the stuff, but now my stomach hurts almost all the time; No GERD symptoms, just what feels like hyperacidity that is more acute when I eat or drink. I have been “cold turkey” for 5 weeks and am still miserible. Had I known it was this difficult to get off the stuff (or had been so advised), I would have looked into other options.

John

AskDocWeb: Since you are still having problems we suggest you see a gastric specialist. There may be another issue that needs to be addressed.

Subj: Stomach pain, ear pain, and the taste of acid
Date: 6/23/2008
I have been taking Nexium 40 for about a week now, and I haven’t noticed any reduction in acid. I am however experiencing stomach pain, ear pain, and worst off all, the taste of acid in my mouth throughout the whole entire day. Are these side effects? Should I stop taking Nexium? My ears are so irritated!

Joel

AskDocWeb: The stomach pain may be a side effect and Nexium is one of many drugs that can alter your sense of taste. With your ear pain you better see your physician.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 6/30/2008
I have been taking nexium for almost three months. As soon as I started to take it I noticed stomach/abdominal pain, and gradual weight gain. I do exercise regularly. I have gained about 5lbs in three months. I just feel bloated all the time. Also, I am 47 and going through menopause. Is weight gain common, and if so is there a med that I can take without weight gain a side effect. Also, I have a videoscope next week. I don’t think nexium is helping. I have no heartburn…never did. Just clump of mucous in throat and some hoarseness at times.

Diane

AskDocWeb: Nexium causes weight gain for a small percentage of people, less than 1%, but for those people it is real weight gain. Your alternatives would depend on what the scope and other tests shows.

Subj: Wish it was cheaper

I am doing well on Nexium, my throat is much better. I wish it would be cheaper.

Subj: Uroxatral and GERD
Date: 7/2/2008
I have been taking Nexium twice a day for about 5 months and I still seem to be suffering from sore throat and sour stomach in the morning and evening. I also take Uroxatral for BPH. My urologist started to take me off the Uroxatrol and my GERD seemed like it was getting better. Had to go back to Uroxatrol because of urinary problems and the GERD seemed to get worse again. Urologist says this beta blocker should not contribute to acid reflux but symptoms seem to dictate otherwise. Have you heard of Uroxatrol causing GERD?

Kelly

AskDocWeb: Between one and two percent of Uroxatral-treated patients experience abdominal pain, dyspepsia, bloating, heartburn, constipation and nausea.

Uroxatral is a prescription drug called an “alpha-blocker” that is used in adult men to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Uroxatral may help to relax the muscles in the prostate and the bladder which may lessen the symptoms of BPH and improve urine flow. The most common side effects with Uroxatral are dizziness, headache, and tiredness.

Subj: Long-term use of Nexium
Date: 7/2/2008
I would like to know if any one you know with long term use of nexium had damage to their esophagus. My uncle who was 75 years old, recently passed away, had to have a feeding tube inserted in stomach a year before he died, nerve damaged couldn’t swallow. Now my mother who took it for years has the same problem, she just had a feeding tube inserted in her stomach. I honestly beleive it was caused by long term use, what is your feeling in this matter

Gary

AskDocWeb: In most cases Nexium helps to heal damage to the esophagus (erosive esophagitis) caused by acid reflux but not always.

Subj: After I quit taking it
Date: 7/10/2008
I’ve been on Nexium for about 3 years. Every time I went to see my gastroenterologist he advised to stay on Nexium. I am heartburn free, but I have very dry throat and still there is a burning feeling in my stomach and chest (even though I take Nexium). Maybe there really is no reason to continue taking it, since I can take anything else for just my heartburn (like Gaviscon) whenever I have it? But I plan on quitting Nexium (it’s been awhile and I heard it could be dangerous for your bones, and well some other parts of your body as well, since it’s masking symptoms). One thing I’m concerned about is how difficult it would be and for how long will I experience anything like nausea after I quit taking it. Thank you!

Andrey

AskDocWeb: That would depend on your condition. Please talk to your doctor about this before trying anything.

Subj: Nexium and cough
Date: 7/11/2008
I have been taking Nexium for over a year now and it has worked great for me. However, I recently got a sore throat and was put on antibiotics for it. The sore throat went a way for a week but now it’s back. My Dr did a swab and says that there is no infection. She thinks it may be my GERD acting up. I also have a dry cough (usually at night). This has been going on for a month now and does not seem to be getting any better. I take 40 mg of Nexium a day. Can Nexium stop working after a while? I’ve had a scope done when I was first put on the Nexium and nothing unusual showed up.

Darlene

AskDocWeb: It is more likely that your condition has changed. Several others have mentioned developing a cough while on Nexium.

Subj: Nexium weight gain
Date: 7/13/2008
Since taking nexium I have noticed I’m gaining weight fast! Is this common? Can I try something different that wont cause me to gain weight?

Danita

AskDocWeb: There are many reports of people gaining weight while taking Nexium. Unfortunately the manufacturer doesn’t publish what percentage of people gain weight. You will have to talk to your doctor about what might be a safe alternative to Nexium.

Subj: Extreme weight gain
Date: 7/27/2008
I have been taking Nexium for 30 days and noticed extreme weight gain. I work out 5 days a week and had no significant change in diet. I am seeking an alternative, maybe prevacid. Do you have any information regarding prevacid and weight gain?

Melanie

AskDocWeb: Sorry, we don’t but many people are going that route. Let us know how it works out for you.

Subj: Nexium
Date: 7/30/2008
I have been on it for a year now after being diagnosed with a slight hiatal hernia. I have not had any side effect from it other than a weight gain of about 24 pounds, and it may not even be from the Nexium necessarily. I notice however that when I run out for a few days that my reflux is horrible, however as soon as I am back on it I a feel just fine. I excercise 4-5 days a week, take B12, B6.B complex, Flax oil, Mulitivitamin, and Calcium in addition to Synthroid (Thyroid Medication). My Blood Pressure is 100/60, my thyroid is normal now, my cholesterol is perfect, and my over all health is fantastic. I just can’t seem to lose the weight despite intense excercise and nice healthy diet full of clean food. I am 5’8″ and weigh 219.0 and I weighed 195 when I started the Nexium. Maybe I should trying going off of it as an experment to see if it’s me or the purple pill. I will try the apple mixture if it comes back while I am off to see if that does the trick. Thanks!

Lisa
