Subj: Weight loss?

I had a throat problem that my GI doctor told me is because of GERD. I was on Nexium for 8 months. I lost 9 lbs. for the past eight months. That throat problem is still there. Today My GI Doctor sent me for CAT Scan of the abdomen. Could that weight loss be caused by the Nexuim? Please advice. Thank you

Subj: Sore throat and tiredness

I’ve been taking Nexium for 4 months. It was prescribed to me for stomach pains, bubbly feeling, felt like bad indigestion starting 2 hours after eating evening meal. If I massaged my stomach and make myself burp, I would feel some better! This only happened in the evening. I can eat breakfast, lunch, snacks during the day without a problem. But whether I eat dinner at 5 PM or 8 PM., it’s the same thing. As long as I take a 40mg Nexium 1 hour before dinner time it helps. I want to get off of it now because I have severe muscle aches in my back and leg cramps at night. I started feeling tired all the time, nauseated frequently. I didn’t have these side effects in the beginning. Recently I have also had a bad sore throat, my Dr. did a strep test, normal. I think my body can’t tolerate the Nexium anymore. He thinks I have Carotidynia that is causing the sore throat and tiredness, but says that it is unrelated to the Nexium, what do you think ?

AskDocWeb: Not sure about Carotidynia but Carotodynia is a soreness along the carotid artery. It is possible to have multiple health problems at the same time.
Subj: Swelling in nose

As soon as I started taking Nexium I started noticing some swelling in my nose. I have stopped taking the drug, but it seems that I am now having symptoms of rosacea. I noticed that another person mentioned the same thing. Is this common? I found on another site that a doctor mentioned that drugs like Nexium, because they decrease acidity in the stomach, might allow an increase in bacteria which could then cause some related allergy. Any thoughts or observations?

AskDocWeb: Rosacea is not common and is not even listed as a side effect of taking Nexium. Stomach acid is one of the body’s defenses against harmful bacteria. Decrease the stomach acid and some of those bad guys get into your digestive tract where they can flourish. This hasn’t been studied enough to know what all the possible consequences are to decreasing stomach acid.
Subj: Constant chest pain/pressure

I have been taking 40mg Nexium once a day for a couple of years or more. I have constant chest pain/pressure on my left side. Have been checked for heart problems but everything is okay. Can it be the Nexium? I also have headaches and see that is a frequent side effect.

AskDocWeb: Yes, Nexium has been reported to cause both chest pain and back pain in some patients although the manufacturer does not say what percentage of users experience pain in those areas. Notify your doctor if you have any chest pain, tarry stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, throat pain or severe stomach pain.
Subj: Barrett’s esophagus

Doc says I have Barrets. I do not complain of GERD, but a strange feeling lump in my throat. Sort of like phlegm. He prescribed 40 mg. With no change in the throat issue, he doubled the Rx to 80 per day. No change after a year. I’ve been trying to lose weight, as he suggested, but no luck.

Subj: I need serious help

I’ve been on Nexium for about 3 months now. It works. I was on Zegerid for first 2 months and it kinda worked at first but then didn’t help out at all. I suffer from pain under my right ribcage that waxes and wanes between meals–morning and night. I started on the PPIs when I was having bad gut problems. I did ALL the tests: Endoscopy, Barium CTScan, Galbladder tests (Ultrasound and HIDA Scan with CCk injection). Gastritis was the only diagnosis they could give me. All the Galbladder test came back negative, although the CCK injection induced the pain in my right side. I’ve been told I have two problems, one is Acid Reflux and the other is IBS. But I’ve tried Hyoscymine for 3 weeks and pepperment oil for 2 weeks and nothing could help with the pain.
It should be mentioned that I do have Ulceritive Colitis but I’ve been doing fine with it the past 3 years. Have been taking Colozal, 6 a day, and it seems to work. I was on generic for a while and thought that might have enduced all my problems. But they are all still there. I’ve lost a lot of weight, haven’t been able to work due to the pain and discomfort, I have in my sternum and right side. I can deal with the cramping, most of the time. I saw a surgeon today and told me he could help me. He said it isn’t my galbladder. But I’ve read many stories of people have similiar symptoms and when they opt for the surgeory, they recover from it all. What can I do? I will try the apple cidder but what about my pain in the right side? Could it be from the nexium? Did the Zegerid bring the pain and the nexium is still carying it? I tried weening off of nexium to 1 a day, but I didn’t last more the 2 days. It seems I need it so I can eat, and so my stomach doesn’t hurt. I need serious help. I can’t function and live like this. I even tried all the dietary changes. I do every one. I live off rice, baby food, pasta, and bananas. I eat small meals. Don’t eat before bedtime. I don’t smoke, drink alchohol or caffeine, and I don’t eat chocolate. If it is IBS what else is there to try excluding the Pepperment oil, Crystilized ginger, and Hyoscymine? I don’t feel the pain is caused by the movement of my bowels. I’ve been living with UC for 3 years and its a different type of pain. Can my galbladder be giving me all my stomach issuses? Even though all the tests have come back negative? Can it be giving me GERD? Can Proton Pump Inhib. be the cause of the pain in my right-side just under my rib cage? Please help. Thank you.

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may need to consult with a specialist, a gastroenterologist, to find out what is going on. Others here have reported the same pain on the right side while taking Nexium.
Subj: Leg pain?

I have been taking Nexium for a few years now and have had no indigestion, however, I have recently been experiencing severe leg pain at night. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced leg pain after being on Nexium for a long period of time. Also, do you know if leg pain could be a side effect? Thanks!

AskDocWeb: We wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Nexium might cause leg pain but it is not listed as a side effect. Several people have reported numbness, sensitivity to cold, burning sensations, tingling, and swelling in their legs. These side effects appear to happen to less than one percent of users.
Subj: Weight gain

Started taking Protonix shortly before my hysterectomy in 2007 then switched to Nexium earlier this year. Experienced an 8-10 lb. weight gain with these medications. I am a runner and I could not figure out why even with all the miles I was logging & trimming my diet way down, I could not lose any of that weight. It just continued to inch up. At one point I was training for a half marathon & running close to 40 miles a week and GAINING weight the entire time! The weight made it even more difficult/frustrating to run. Until landing on this site & reading all the notes that sounded so much like my experience, I had not made the connection. Now I have & hopefully now the weight will finally go away.

Subj: Relieved by taking the Nexium

I am 44 and have been on Nexium for several years now. I was told to take two a day but got severe diarhea when I did so. I have always stuck with the one a day and done fine with the heartburn. On different occasions I have tried to go without the Nexium but get severe chest pain in the center of my chest like a knife that goes thru to my backbone. It is only relieved by taking the Nexium. Recently after a hysterectomy I am noticing pain in different parts of my body dealing with my hip joints shoulders, back, aching and sometimes so sharp I cannot bare weight on one of my legs…could this have anything to do with Nexium and the bone report? Would a test for bone health be something I should consider? I have had a back surgery also about 2 years ago requiring replacement of a disc and was told I had a degenerative condition…arthritis. How would Nexium effect any of this and what is a good alternative I could consider? Thanks for any input anyone has.

Subj: Upset stomach and diarrhea

So I have been taking the recommended dosage of Nexium for almost two and a half weeks now. I still feel symptoms of upset stomach and I have been having bouts with diarrhea that’s green. Cramping feeling in my stomach has also been a problem now and again, but mainly it’s the burning feeling in my stomach. Sometimes I get pains in my stomach, sides, chest, all over that general region… My doc brought me in for an EKG and said it was perfectly normal so that the pains were probably gas pains at best. Does Nexium cause gas and diarrhea and does gas cause such pains? They aren’t crippling pains but they are quite uncomfortable.
In addition to the Nexium once a day in the morning I am taking a supplement of Aloe Vera Capsules, should I stop taking those? One more question… I have only been taking the Nexium for two and a half weeks, should I just be patient and give it more time to work and heal? I’m 23, never really been sick before. Scared out of my mind. Also I just got taken off Doxycycline (antibiotic) the other day, I was on that while on the Nexium. Please, some good, calming advice would really put me at ease. Thank you.

The upset stomach and diarrhea are possible side effects of Nexium as is the gas which can cause abdominal pains. Be sure to keep your doctor informed about any supplements you are taking including the aloe vera capsules.
Subj: Dry cough

I have also been on nexium for about a year. I take 40mg once a day. I had severe heartburn especially at night and it was preventing me from sleeping. I am practically heartburn free since I have been on the nexium, but I have gained about 20 pounds in just the last few months and also have been occasionally experiencing really bad dry cough at night. It will usually last for a week or sometimes more. I thought it was just my allergies but now I am thinking otherwise. The doctor originally wanted me to take 2 pills a day but I hate becoming dependant on meds. I started with the 2 pills but have worked down to taking 1. Will changing back to the 2 pills a day help with the dry cough I am experiencing or should I try another medication?
