Subj: Gas and stomach pain
Date: 2/3/2009
I have been on Nexium for two days. I have taken it in the past and it has greatly helped my acid reflux which would sometimes cause food to painfully and slowly go down. However, I have also noticed, and recently now on days 1 and 2, that I have gas and stomach pain, after eating. I didn’t have this before. Can the Nexium cause this?

Jonathan

AskDocWeb: Yes, both are possible side effects of taking Nexium.

Subj: Atrophic gastritis
Date: 2/5/2009
I’ve been on Nexium for 3 years for a gastric ulcer. I’ve never really had heartburn except for about 3 weeks prior to being dx with the ulcer. Every time I try to go off of the Nexium, my entire esophagus burns and according to my scope 3 years ago, I didn’t even have esophagitis or GERD at that time. I seem to have more of a problem now (only when I attempt to go off the Nexium). I’m wondering if my stomach is too used to having low acid in it b/c of the Nexium so that when I go off of it, my stomach can’t handle a normal amount? What is atrophic gastritis? Thanks

Kristy

AskDocWeb: Atrophic gastritis is a long-term inflammation of the stomach accompanied by a breakdown of the mucous membranes of the stomach. This serious condition is sometimes seen in elderly patients but is also seen in patients with dangerous anemia. Ferri’s Clinical Advisor recommends surveillance gastroscopy because of the increased risk of gastric cancer.

Subj: Long-term use of Nexium
Date: 2/5/2009
My partner has been on Nexium for approx. 5 years for gastric reflux. Over the past few years he had been bothered with diarrhea, mainly after eating greasy foods. This has been increasing in frequency over time. Over the past 5 years we travel on vacation and he always gets a severe case of diarrhea, when no one else does. I believe he is having a side effect of this medication and this appears to be exacerbated by consuming an increase amount of alcohol while on vacation. It is ruining our vacations and now he is at the point he does not want to travel anymore. Is this a cause of long term use and is this a possibility that it is causing irritable bowel syndrome or gastritis.

Rob

AskDocWeb: Sorry Rob, it seems there is very little information about what happens beyond 6 months, most likely because the use of Nexium is not recommended beyond that point.

Subj: Undigested food?
Date: 2/6/2009
I started taking Nexium just over 4 weeks ago for a suspected ulcer – though the stomach pain subsided quickly, I have had the following side effects (at least I THINK they’re from the Nexium) – Constipation for the first 5 days or so, followed by loose stools, 3-4 times a day, consisting of what appears to be undigested food. Has anyone else noticed undigested food? Is this a common side effect? Also have mild pain (like a pulled muscle) in my right shoulder / neck… any advise or comment?

Erica

AskDocWeb: It is possible that the reduction in stomach acid may result in some undigested food passing through the system.

Subj: Beginning to have symptoms again
Date: 2/9/2009
I have been taking Nexium (20mg), one per day for about 3 years. Until recently, it was working fine, but I am beginning to have symptoms again. I was on Protonix prior to Nexium and had the same problem. Can one’s body actually become immune to these type of drugs?

Lynn

AskDocWeb: According to the 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference, Nexium is only recommended for use up to 6 months. We would see a specialist if symptoms persisted beyond that.

Subj: Abdominal pain
Date: 2/9/2009
I was diagnosed with mild chronic gastritis in Dec 2008 through upper endoscopy. About a month before that my doctor prescribed 40 mg Nexium. I’ve been on Nexium now for over 2 mos but don’t feel much improvement. I’ve drastically changed my diet by not drinking coffee, alchohol, fruit juices. I’ve also tried to avoid tomato based food. My only symptom is minor abnominal burning. When I take the Nexium, I feel the abnominal pain gets worse. I understand one of Nexium’s major side effect is abnominal pain. My question is how long should I continue to take Nexium and what is the average amount of time to heal mild chronic gastritis? I appreciate your feedback.

Rowell

AskDocWeb: It may take 4 to 8 weeks to heal the damage to the esophagus and to reduce heartburn symptoms that go along with it. For some patients who have not healed after 4 weeks, another 4-8 weeks may be needed.

Subj: Gained 30 pounds
Date: 2/10/2009
Weight Gain 30 pounds since starting Nexium, for GERD and Hiatus Hernia. I am so glad others have gained weight. I have tryed every diet, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Weight doctors, I go to the Gym and use a trainer. I was ready for lap band but not now. I will talk to my Doc about my stop taking nexium, but I have a question. I have been seeing a gastroenterologist for 27+ years and I have been through all the Meds. Nexium does work, but my last scope I had 25 polyps removed from my stomach and 2 from the colon. Do you think long term Nexium use could have something to do with this?

Madeline

AskDocWeb: Sorry Madeline, not enough is known about the long-term affects in order to say one way or the other.

Subj: Salty taste and burning sensation
Date: 2/13/2009
I have been taking Nexium for sometime now and have been getting this salty taste and burning sensation in my mouth, I was wondering if this could be caused by your product.

Robert

AskDocWeb: Nexium is not our product, it is made by AstraZeneca LP. It is possible that Nexium may cause the salty taste. Nexium is one of many drugs that can alter your sense of taste. Others have reported the taste of bile, a metallic taste and an acid taste.

Subj: On Nexium for over 10 years
Date: 2/17/2009
I have been on Nexium for over 10 years and for the most part it has done well for me. Now I have a feeling of something in my throat and a full feeling in my stomach right below my rib cage and I am belching all the time when I swallow as well as a feeling of being bloated. I had also gained 20 lbs. I recently had an endoscopy and the doctor says everything looks normal and he dialated my esauphagus and said to double up on my nexium I normally take 1 per day of 40mg and to call him in a week. My symptoms are still the same and it is very annoying. Could Nexium be the problem of what is happening?

Carolyn

AskDocWeb: Nexium may account for some of your symptoms, others have reported the same full feeling, abdominal pain, and bloating.

Subj: Gas, burping and pain under sternum
Date: 2/22/2009
I had an endoscopy and biopsy – endo showed gastritis / esophogitis and the biopsy was negative, no barrett’s or anything else. I was put on Nexium – now after 7 days I have started experiencing gas, burping and mostly pain under my sternum. Can this be caused by the Nexium? I also had a Hida Scan and Gall Bladder is 83%.

Mike

AskDocWeb: Yes, the most common side effects are headache, diarrhea, nausea, flatulence (gas), abdominal pain, constipation, and dry mouth.

Subj: Not able to work for three years
Date: 2/24/2009
I have read all of the input in this forum and it amazes me that the doctors do not know the side effects of this medication. I have also been taking it for around 4 years and have had terrific neck pain, headaches, diarrhea, joint pains, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, ringing in the ears etc. Also tachycardia and anxiety. I have been trying for a long time to figure what was wrong with me. I am 60 years old and have not been able to work for three years because I have felt so bad. The nexium helped with the GERD but gave me so many problems that are exactly like the others who voiced their problems in this forum. I even asked my doctor about nexium causing diarrhea and she said it is not one of the side effects. I have had tachycardia for so long but the doctors say my heart is fine just beats fast. I never had that problem before nexium but I must have really been blind to these side effects. Now I have to try and get off these pills and hopefully get my sanity back. What disturbs me is the lack of knowledge the doctors have and they are prescribing all these medications.

Subj: Nothing but misery
Date: 2/24/2009
I have been on Nexium for a month and I am miserable. I have abdonimal pain daily along with tons of gas and bloating. Plus nausea. I can’t take it anymore and I am going to stop. I am going to use gaviscon for my acid reflux. Nexium is horrible – what it does is inhibit your stomach from pumping out the acid that digests food – what you are left with is food that is slow to digest and sits in your stomach/intestines – fermenting so to speak. That can surely cause weight gain, gas and all of the other symptoms. Zantac, Tagamet and others in that class are acid reducers (actually they are all forms of antihistamines) but they don’t shut down the pumps that shoot the acid. I would recommend trying prescription doses of these medications over the proton-pump inhibitors. Nexium has caused me nothing but misery.

Subj: Severe reactions to Nexium
Date: 2/26/2009
I’ve had pretty severe reactions to Nexium (40 mg). Symptoms include: signs of rosacea, chest pain, back pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, headache, skin rash (hands and feet) mood swings. I’ve since stopped taking the medication and switched to natural remedies (extra virgin pine nut oil) and the results have been a blessing.

Subj: After a year of Nexium
Date: 2/27/2009
Initially Nexium worked excellent for me but after a year or so of using it I started feeling upset stomach and esophagous burning. The doctor tries Ranitidine and lanzoprazole and they give the same problem. Presently I am using omeprazole 20% and still have the same problem as with Nexium. Is it a problem caused by using Nexium for more than a year?(Long term usage?)

Emendoza

AskDocWeb: Nexium is considered a short-term treatment of 4 to 8 weeks, and a possible second treatment of another 4 to 8 weeks. Please note that the manufacturer does not recommended the use of Nexium for longer than 6 months. The effects of using it for longer than 6 months is something that needs more study. So far there isn’t enough known about this to be able to tell if your symptoms may be due to long-term use of Nexium or not.

Subj: Skin rash?
Date: 3/1/2009
Can nexium cause skin rash?

Joe

AskDocWeb: It is possible to have an allergic reaction to Nexium so consult with your doctor ASAP.

Subj: Nexium and eye problems?
Date: 3/1/2009
I had only taken Nexium about a week when I experienced white thing lite flashes at the outside of my left eye–and then, some floaters–my eye doc said this could be the sign of a detached retina–checked–mine was ok–symptoms diminishing now–he said he found it hard to believe it was from the Nexium–but I am afraid to try it again–also had some intermittent mild dizziness?

–Vicki

AskDocWeb: The patient information does list blurred vision as a possible side effect that should be reported to your doctor. Read more feedback about Nexium.
