Subj: On-and-off situation
Date: 4/11/2009
I was having really bad GERD and also a stabbing-like pain in my upper stomach, both occurrences after meals. The first day I took Nexium, I had NO reflux or stomach pains that morning, a little at night. Next day the opposite, a little reflux in the morning, none the rest of the day. It’s been off and on. Now on day six of Nexium, I’m having my old reflux again. Will my initial treatment/healing process entail an on-and-off situation like this? In other words, with Nexium and my condition, is it going to be one step backwards, two steps forward, taking awhile to feel 100% cured? Or should I be all well by now?
Bobby
AskDocWeb: It can take awhile, up to 8 weeks to heal the damage to the esophagus.
Subj: Esophagus swelling, chest and back pain
Date: 4/11/2009
I’ve been using nexium for about 2 months. I was taking it so I could take anti-inflammatories for my lower back pain. Those cause my gall bladder a great deal of pain and cramps. Axid usually helps but the Dr. put me on Nexium so I could take one pill a day instead. Both Axid and Nexium helped to keep my gall bladder from acting up. Now I have severe esophagus swelling and pain. I feel like something is stuck in my throat. I have chest and back pain all up and down where my esophagus is located. I feel like my glands are swollen. I feel like I have swelling and pain where the esophagus attaches to the stomach. …I stopped the nexium 2 days ago after reading these could be side effects of nexium. The only thing I’m taking now is tylenol once or twice a day for my low back pain. I wonder when will these side effects subside? 🙁 I’m miserable and wish I had never taken these pills.

Subj: Sore throat
Date: 4/13/2009
Hello, I’ve been taking Nexium 40mg twice a day for 10 months now. I have had a sore throat since an EGD (camera with biopsy) back on May 23rd 2008. I have seen like a total of 7 special doctors. The first EGD was positive for barretts and I had another EGD in Nov 2008 and it was negative for Barretts. The EGD on May 23,2008 the doctor dilated my esophagas. I’ve seen 4 ENT doc’s and none can help my sore throat. It’s very depressing having a constant sore throat going on a year now. I can’t understand why there isn’t some medicine besides the Nexium that could help my throat. Did the first doc doing the EGD and dialation cause damage to my throat. I can’t get a straight answer to this question. I stopped seeing that doc after my first EGD. I heard he was a drunk and been arrested for assaulting a flight attendant and the pilot had to turn the plane around back to the gate. I wonder what he may have done to my throat? Please help me with any information on something I can try to stop my sore throat pain. God Bless,
Mr.B
Subj: Calcium citrate
Date: 4/13/2009
I have been on Nexium for a while now and it works for me. My bone density test also was fine. I recently was told to take calcium citrate for my supplement while on Nexium, it is supposed to be better absorbed with this. Is this true?
Laurie
AskDocWeb: There is a growing concern that PPIs may reduce the body’s ability to maintain healthy bones. In order to counteract this possibility many people are taking a calcium supplement such as calcium citrate. If you take thyroid hormones, corticosteroids, tetracycline, or iron pills check with your doctor before taking a Calcium supplement. Calcium can interfere with the function of these drugs.
Subj: Increasing dose caused a problem
Date: 4/15/2009
I was on 40 mg of Nexium once daily for a year and it was wonderful. I had tried so many other proton pump inhibitors and had horrible side affects such as loose bowels, a dozen bowel movements per day, cramps, constipation etc. Several weeks following surgery to remove my ovaries and a kidney tumor I noticed I was having some AM throat clearing and experienced a small amount of blood. I went to a gastroenterologist who doubled my Nexium to twice a day. I immediately started having abdominal troubles, pain, cramping the feeling of bowel constriction. I had to stop the Nexium. I tried after 5 days to take one and the abominal problems started again. I waited another 6 days and tried to take one. Same problem. Pain that was off the scale. I am so angry that increasing my dose seems to have caused me to not be able to tolerate Nexium at all. Has anyone else had this problem? Does it eventually go away and allow you to take Nexium again? The days that I was off of Nexium I had terrible reflux pain. I am between a rock and a hard place.

Subj: Long-term effects
Date: 4/16/2009
I have been on Nexium for about 3-4 years on and off. I didn’t develop the side effects at first. Recently, over the last yr, I went through a stressful time and was on Nexium the whole yr. Here’s what happened: my hair fell out, I became acutely depressed, anxious, started panic attacks, had heart palpitations, had insomnia, was tired all the time, had vision problems, sore throat, nausea, fuzzy thinking and cognitive impairment, gained 40 pounds very quickly, had problems swallowing, very bad tinnitus, developed a rash under the skin on my face, had achy joints and muscles, back and chest pain, low libido and sexual dysfunction, and became so desperate I went to four doctors.
Some of the side effects I mention above may not be “listed,” yet when I stopped Nexium, ALL the side effects I mentioned slowly started to go away. That’s right FOUR doctors. Two ordered lots of tests, and two treated me like I was a depressed midde-aged woman seeking attention for faking sickness because oddly the tests came back normal. How about that? I was sleeping 12 hrs a day to get away from myself because I was so depressed and miserable. I’d rather have the acid reflux than the side effects! Keep in mind that every doctor was told I was taking Nexium, and that I have never had any of these symptoms before Nexium.
I stopped taking Nexium and for about 3-4 days had very bad acid reflux which I took Tums for. Then I slowed down on the Tums and made sure I sat up during and after I ate and slept with an extra pillow. And guess what happened? The acid reflux is gone. And slowly as this poison is getting out of my system I am feeling like the woman I used to be before Nexium. I categorize my life as BPP and APP (before and after Purple Poison). This drug was so destructive and my life so destroyed by it, it will take years before I can repair my losses and disruption.
If I hadn’t done the research on my own to figure out what was wrong, I would have been treated for the “illnesses” two of the doctors suggested: depression, weight gain, anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia, etc. They knew I was taking Nexium and wanted to give me more drugs for the individual side effects! Fortunately, I was smart enough to stop listening to doctors who clearly should have seen the problem. Now that I am off this poison I feel better by the day. I looked for class action law suits and all I found was the dispute over Prilosec and Nexium. My pharmacist then, did not mention the side effects. Foolishly, I didn’t read the enclosure because I believed in what my doctor told me and the acid reflux did get better. Tell me, please, does a doctor have an obligation to mention drug side-effects – especially when the side effects are the reason for the visit?

Subj: Skipping a dose
Date: 4/16/2009
I skip my dose of Nexium once a week. I don’t take it on the day I take Fosamax as have been told it interferes with calcium absorption. For the past 3 weeks, on the day that I skip it I generally don’t feel well (congested, strange like I’m on edge, stomach ache, slight indigestion). Can this be related to skipping a dose?
Vern
AskDocWeb: It is possible, the slight indigestion and stomach ache may be your original symptoms returning when you skip a dose.
Subj: Increased blood pressure
Date: 4/20/2009
I have been taking Nexium for a little over a year. Recently I have high blood pressure. I’ve always had low blood pressure until the last few months. I’m just curious to find out if the Nexium could be the culprit. As I have read over these reviews, I too have alot of the symptoms…weight gain, heart palpatations, etc. Please let me know what you think about the increased blood pressure readings.
Terri
AskDocWeb: There have been several posts from those using Nexium beyond 6 months that mention high blood pressure but it is not listed as one of the side effects.
Subj: Barrett’s esophagus
Date: 4/20/2009
I was diagnosed with Barretts Esopagus about 6-7 years ago and was prescibed Nexium 40 mg every day and to make the right diet and lifestyle changes. On my recent endoscopy follow up visit my doctor said everything looked great. To a point where he noted in my records as just having a history of Barretts and wants me to continue with the Nexium every other day. Why do I need to take it anymore?
ANNIE
AskDocWeb: In some patients there is a concern that the condition may lead to the development of cancer of the esophagus even if no symptoms are present. The risk of developing cancer is approximately 1% each year. There are several studies in progress to develop more effective treatments for Barrett’s esophagus.
Subj: 40 pounds to go
Date: 4/21/2009
I have been on Nexium since November 2008. I started a weight loss program in June 2008. I lost 60 lbs. prior to Nexium in 5 months. After taking Nexium I have lost 4 pounds in 5 more months. I have stayed on my weight loss plan. I will be stopping Nexium this week to see if my weight loss starts again. Have 40 pounds to go.

Subj: Gas and pain in the throat
Date: 4/21/2009
I have been on Nexium for GERD for 3 months now. It does not seem to be helping much. The doctor increased the dosage to 2 tablets a day recently. I have changed my diet too. My symptoms are: reflux “gas” pain in the throat, upper chest and diaphragm-and lots of burping!! Is there something else I can take along with the Nexium to relieve the gas?? I think that if I can just get a handle on the gas, the Nexium can take over. Perhaps something like Gaviscon? I have a scope scheduled in 2 weeks to rule out ulcers, but I think that he is just playing it safe. I would like to have it under control by then. Thanks!
Mary
AskDocWeb: According to the patient insert, antacids such as Gaviscon, Tums, Maalox, Mylanta, or Rolaids may be used while taking Nexium. They do not interfere with the effectiveness of Nexium.
Subj: A lot of stomach problems
Date: 4/22/2009
I have been on Nexium 40mg for 2 years, in 2008 I began having a lot of stomach problems like burning, gastritis, cramps and bloating. I had an endoscope and they found Barrett’s and mild gastritis. I am more problems now and the Nexium was increased to 40mg twice a day. My stomach burns continually and I burp a lot. My hands and feet are swelling and I have dizziness. Can Nexium be the cause of this? I just had another endoscope and nothing has changed. I don’t know what to do about all the burning.
Lucy
AskDocWeb: Nexium reduces the amount of acid that your stomach produces but that can take several days. It also doesn’t do anything about the acid that is already there. For immediate relief you may want to consider an antacid.
Subj: Fantastic results
Date: 4/25/2009
I’m a 22 year old female, and have been taking Nexium for at least five years with fantastic results. I’m an Ulcerative Colitis patient, and I really forget how fantastic it is until I miss a day or take a pill a little late. I still have to watch everything I eat, but even good for me foods would have me doubled in pain as a teenager. As well as the medication, I recommend lots of low-fat milk (it keeps my stomach calm), and to really say no to anything raw, and even some cooked fruits and veggies. It sucks, and I miss certain things, but my health is more precious than my taste in food.
