But from what I have read on here I might take this drug for a long time, is this so? I don’t get hart burn just really bad cramps and a bubbling in ALL of my upper and lower stomath. No one has been able to tell me anything at all, Please help me and Thanks!
Bonnie
AskDocWeb: Nexium is designed to be used for short-term treatment (4 to 8 weeks) to heal the damage to the esophagus and to reduce heartburn symptoms that go along with it. For some patients who have not healed after 4 weeks, another 4-8 weeks may be prescribed. Nexium is also prescribed for maintenance so patients don’t have symptoms of heartburn and so that the esophagus can stay healthy. According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, the use of Nexium is not recommended for longer than 6 months.
Subj: Endless merry-go-round
Date: 4/28/2009
Since 2003 I have been having stomach and intestinal cramps and was diagnosed with IBS. Then I developed nausea and pain especially after eating. My doctor told me I had acid reflux and a hiatal hernia. From 2004 – 2008 I have been taking 40 mg Nexium 1x day. Then I developed food poisoning in Oct 2008 and couldn’t keep my regular diet and had to eat softer food for months. I try to avoid most red meat now because of digestion problems. My doctor upped the Nexium to 40 mg 2x day. This was too much as I was feeling even more nauseous with this high dosage. I cut back the Nexium to 1 1/2 day which I am still on for the past 6 months.
I have to get off this drug. In the past couple of months the nausea after eating has increased. I hate this nauseous feeling, cramping in my hernia and like someone is sitting on my stomach. I have vomited a few times over the past year and dread when I get hungry. About 1 hour after eating I have such a heavy feeling in my stomach I can’t stand it. I twice tried to go off Nexium in the past few years and ended up having to resume it within 2-3 days because I thought that I was going to die from nausea and a sick stomach. As soon as I resumed the Nexium I started feeling better.
I have to get off this drug as I have read numerous reports that long term use can cause stomach and mouth cancers as the drug was never tested for long term use of people being on it for years and years. My doctor also told me that I would have to be on it for the rest of my life. I am a very bubbly and happy person but these chronic stomach problems are really getting to me. I want to eat a regular diet and not just soft, safer foods. I’m trying to take digestive enzymes, DGL, red delicious apples and chamomile tea daily but I find that I still need to stay on the Nexium 1 1/2x day!
I am finally seeing a specialist after an 8 month wait. In the last couple of weeks I have developed intestinal cramping and diahreah and constipation and have difficulty falling asleep because of the cram ping. It looks like it may be caused by the Nexium. This seems to be an endless merry-go-round. You shouldn’t feel like vomitting every time you eat. God help all of us that are taking these drugs. The stories and global complaints all pretty much sound the same.

Subj: Barrett’s Esophagus
Date: 4/30/2009
I have been taking Nexium 40mg for about 9 years for Barretts Oesophagus. I suffer from both terrible numbness in my feet and lower legs and also from tinnitus, both of which seemed to start at about the time I started on the Nexium so I was interested to read from many of your contributors that they suffer from the same problem. You seem to suggest that Nexium is a short term treatment but I am being monitored regularly at a research trial at my local hospital and have been for 9 years although the doctors seem blissfully unaware of the side effects. Thanks to your site I can now approach them with a bit more evidence.
Dave
AskDocWeb: We don’t suggest that Nexium is a short term treatment, we are quoting the 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference (page 628) under the heading for Healing of Erosive Esophagitis it says, “Nexium is indicated for the short-term treatment,” under the heading Maintenance of Healing of Erosive Esophagitis it says, “Controlled studies do not extend beyond 6 months,” and under Risk Reduction of NSAID-Associated Gastric Ulcer it says, “Controlled studies do not extend beyond 6 months.”
Subj: Anyone else experienced these symptoms?
Date: 5/1/2009
I recently began taking nexium as a result of a diagnosis received of hiatal hernia with esophagitis which was discovered during an endoscopy. The reason I had the endoscopy was because I have been choking on certain foods and large pills such as calcium supplements. I have only taken 5 nexium pills so far and after reading all the comments on this site I am considering stopping this medication. I feel hyper/energetic since I started taking it and my appetite has decreased and I am experiencing an increase in sexual desire. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms while on nexium? I am not complaining about these symptoms because I enjoy the increase in energy and decrease in appetite and who wouldn’t enjoy an increase in sexual desire? However, I do not want to experience all the bad symptoms I have read on this site and now I fear taking it.

AskDocWeb: Remember that that possible side effect are only that, possible, not everyone will get them. Your doctor weighs the known benefits against the possible side effects and only prescribes it when the benefits outweigh the possible risks.
Subj: Weight lift, sauna or steam room?
Date: 5/1/2009
I occasionally to go gym twice a week until a month ago, I had so heartburn. Actually, I have it on and off since 7 years. I had endscopy last week and they finally found I’ve got hiatus hernia or gastritis. I’m on Nexium since a week. I’m in 30s and well slim, should I go to gym doing weightlift, running or both? Will it erodes my gastritis? I’ve got minor heartburn at the moment.
Nezar
P.S. Can sauna or steam room not affect my gastritis?
AskDocWeb: A sauna or steam room is good for you and is not likely to cause any problems with the gastritis. Weight lifting and other straining activities can result in a prolapsed stomach but some gentle abdominal exercise is essential to good stomach health. Running may aggravate gastric problems in as little as 10 minutes, especially if the intensity of the exercise is high.
Subj: Nexium has stopped working?
Date: 5/8/2009
I’m a 43 year old female with Barrette’s. I was diagnosed about a year ago. My gastroenterologist prescribed Protonix. I took it for awhile but stopped when I read that prolonged use could be associated with gastric cancer. I asked my primary care physician if I could try Nexium. Up until about 2 weeks ago, it was working wonderfully. Now, I feel like I have reflux and heartburn. Is it possible that the Nexium has stopped working?
Roni
AskDocWeb: Nexium and other PPIs do sometimes stop working or lose effectiveness for some people after a while. You might want to ask your doctor about Aciphex as several have said they get better results. Another option that you can discuss with your doctor is taking an H2 blocker (i.e. Zantac, Pepcid) in addition to the Nexium.
Subj: Vomited at the table
Date: 5/9/2009
I went to an ENT to address my snoring and waking myself up during the night. I have had heartburn may twice in the last year. As far as I can tell, I do not have acid reflux. The ENT gave me 40mg. of Nexium to take once a day. I took it twice, and when I went out to dinner I vomited at the table, right in the middle of the meal! This freaked me out because I never had this happen before…I don’t think I should be taking this Nexium since I have no symptoms…what do you think??
Jean
AskDocWeb: We think you should discuss this with your ENT specialist. Nausea is one of the possible side effects of taking Nexium.
Subj: Black stools
Date: 5/9/2009
Since I have been taking nexium again, I find I have black stools.
Budd
AskDocWeb: A black stool can indicate bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as the stomach but can also be caused by iron supplements, Kaopectate, Pepto-Bismol, and black licorice. It may also indicate diverticular disease, gastritis, or peptic ulcer so check with your doctor.
Subj: Panic attacks
Date: 5/11/2009
On 10/29/2006 DEBRA wrote: “My son has been using Nexium and has started to experience panic attacks and feels ‘odd’ when he is taking it. It sounds to me like slight paranoia. Is this usual for Nexium takers?”
This is the main reason I had to quit taking the stuff. I had such bad paranoia, I couldn’t conduct business. I felt ‘suicidal’, I stopped taking it and felt great. Immediately. Not to mention the eye floaters, the creepy crawly’s on my skin, breathing problems, etc… Nexium is poison!

Subj: Drug tests?
Date: 5/11/2009
Can nexium cause false positives on drug tests for anything?
Lindsey
AskDocWeb: There are no reports of Nexium causing any problems on drug tests.
Subj: Pain in my upper back
Date: 5/14/2009
2 months ago developed a sore throat with burning in my chest. More recently I developed a burning pain in my upper back between my shoulders. My Dr put me on antibiotic but that never cleared it. 2 weeks ago he put me on Nexium and since then I have lost 3KG, have a tight throat, feel light headed and have bad abdominal pains, mainly after eating. Yesterday, I had a Baruim meal as I was concerned about esophagus cancer. Tests came up fine and no reflux was detected so I’m going off the Nexium. I’m still concerned about the pain in my upper back, can this be the result of gastritis that has cured and needs time to heal? The pain is not always present and not failry dull now.
Gyula
AskDocWeb: If it was gastritis and the gastritis was cured then it wouldn’t be causing any pain. It sounds like you have something else going on but you would need more tests to find out what.
Subj: Shortness of breath
Date: 5/15/2009
I have been suffering from shortness of breath for four years. I didn’t realize that my condition started shortly after I started the Nexium until last month. My condition has gotten progressively worst over the years. I stopped the Nexium two days ago and do not plan to go back on the pill. I have reduced my meal sizes and will try alternative treatment.

Subj: Nausea, flush feeling, headache, and diarrhea
Date: 5/15/2009
I have taking my first pill this evening at supper time, after experiencing side effects such as nausea, flush feeling in my face, headach, and diarrah I decided to do some research on the pills.. I have come to the conclusion that even though I was precribed these by my doctor I don’t believe they are right for me. I am going to stop taking them, but was curious to how long I was going to feel this way before the pill wares off.
Krystal
AskDocWeb: The half-life of Nexium ranges from 1 to 1½ hours. That’s the amount of time for half of the drug to leave your system. Read more feedback about Nexium.
