Subj: Terrible intestinal Yeast infection
Before starting, I seen my doctor right away about this. I started taking Nexium late March of this year. At 1st it did nothing for my heartburn and after several day’s it started to kick in. Than the horrible gas started, followed by cramps in my stomach and than I noticed blood in my stools. At that time I also had a terrible intestinal Yeast infection that took many pills for it to go away, and not to mention the dry mouth. I had to take water to bed with me. I would wake and it would feel like my mouth was glued shut…The makers of this drug really needs to do some more research on this!
Subj: Swelling and trouble swallowing
After weeks on priolsec 20mgs. I was still having throat sysmptoms at night. Feeling of a lump or swelling and sometimes trouble swollowing. Doctor put me on Nexium 40mgs. Today is day three and I’m still having throat symptoms. When can I expect this symptom to subside? I gave up all my favorite foods seven months ago and my bed is evevated. I’m also in good shape and do yoga. The Nexium does help with my chronic acid tummy. I was scoped and had a slight irritation.
AskDocWeb: Although Nexium starts working within hours of taking it, it may take several days to notice a reduction in symptoms. Make sure your doctor is aware of your difficulty in swallowing.
Subj: Can not lose any weight
I just learned from this site, why I got fat and can not lose any weight. I have been on nexium for a few years now. I take one 40 mg pill a day. Will stopping it allow me to lose weight? Or did this drug make me permanetly fat? How long will it take for me, after stopping it, to be able to start loseing weight? again? Also, Is the bloating that I have that you say is fermantation in the gut, really yeast? I have tried the yeast diet and the bloating did not get any better. Will the bloating go down to from stopping this drug or do I need to go on the yeast diet to get rid of the bloating after I have stopped it?
AskDocWeb: Don’t stop taking any prescription drug without first talking to your health care provider. You would need to be evaluated by a gastroenterologist to find out if it is fermentation or something else that is causing your bloating. We have yet to hear of a drug that would make you permanently fat.
Subj: It was a living nightmare
I took Nexium. Shortly after I started, I started getting bad muscle cramps and bad I mean really bad stomach cramps. I continued to take it and it got to the point that whatever I ate or drank came out the other end rather violently, this went on for several days with the severe pain, then it started looking a lot like blood, dark red and stuff, from using the bathroom. I got off of Nexium and within about a day, I was already getting better. It took a few days for my stomach to return completely to normal. It was a living nightmare. It literally felt like I was loosing my insides, but this only happened on the pill, because my doctor resubscribed it to me several years later as my heartburn was getting worse and I tried it again, with the same result, only problem was, this time it has not cleared up as quickly and my tummy still has it ups and downs.
Subj: Concerned with fetal defects
For those women who were concerned with fetal defects, I took 40mg of Nexium throughout my whole pregnancy and my baby is completely normal and is thriving well.
Subj: Concerned about long term use of nexium
Like some of the other users of Nexium, I am concerned with the effects of long term use (I have been using it for 4 years for a GERD problem). I have a problem with low hemoglobin and have read on the net that Nexium interferes with the absorption of B-12 which is necessary for the bone marrow to produce normal blood. Also, there is a recent alert that long term use of nexium may possibly cause heart problems. What is your take on the matter?
AskDocWeb: You may want to check the date on your alert. There was a lot of concern raised in 2007 about the possibly heart problems caused by Nexium. At that time the possibility could not be confirmed or denied by the studies involved. The reduced secretion of gastric acid and pepsin produced by Nexium can reduce absorption of protein-bound (dietary) vitamin B-12 however, clinically significant vitamin B-12 deficiency is unlikely unless there is prolonged use (2 years or more) or dietary vitamin intake is low.
Subj: Tightness in the chest and fatigue
Tiredness and some tightness in chest from Nexium? I have been taking Nexium for about 5 days and noticed that about an hour or two after I take it. It seems like I feel more tired and have some tightness in my chest, almost like I need to cough or something, and sometimes I also have a feeling like there is a lump in my throat. I was wondering if this can be a normal affect of Nexium, and if it is something I should worry about? I also have allergies so some of it could be part of that but I seem to notice it after I take the pills, so I’m not sure what is causing it. Is it something serious that I need to talk to a doctor as soon as possible about or is it just something I can mention to my doctor in a few days?
AskDocWeb: A tightness in the chest and fatigue are signs of a heart attack so check with your doctor as soon as possible.
Subj: Calcium absorption
I have been taking Nexium since it became available and it has helped with my GERD. I was diagnosed with OsteoPena last year and have been taking calcium supplements as a treatment for my bone loss. Now I am reading that use of Nexium can cause bone loss because calcium absorbtion is hampered by its use. True?
AskDocWeb: A study of nearly 14,000 hip fracture cases in Britain reports elderly people who take drugs like Prilosec, Prevacid, or Nexium may make it difficult for the body to absorb calcium. According to Dr. Abiodun at Marshfield Clinic, “The longer you are taking this medication they found out that they risk of fractures actually goes up almost exponentially.” The researchers report a 44 percent increased risk of breaking a hip during a fall.
Subj: Nexium and low iron stores
I have been on Nexium for 13 years. Since being prescribed Nexium I have had fluctuating iron levels. Now for the past 5 years I have been anemic with low iron stores. Every two years I have a colonoscopy and endoscopy. There is no rational reason for the loss of iron. Being a woman, it was assumed that the cause was from heavy menstruating, but now in menopause this no longer exists. I continue to remain anemic with low blood stores unless I am consistently taking iron pills, 300mg x 3 per day. Looking over my medical history this all coincides with the time frame that I started taking Nexium. Does Nexium cause anemia? Can the long term use of iron supplements cause liver damage?
AskDocWeb: Because Nexium reduces the production of stomach acid, it may interfere with the body’s ability to absorb iron salts resulting in anemia. If you have any of the following side effects, notify your doctor immediately: Abnormal bruising or signs of bleeding such as bleeding from the gums, nose, digestive tract, vagina (females), faintness, dizziness, loss of consciousness, or rash (signs of problems with blood clot formation). Taking iron supplements can damage both the heart and the liver and should not be done unless instructed to do so by your doctor.
Subj: Insurance companies do not want to pay
I have been also been taking nexium for about 10 years. Prior to that I was on Prilosec, Prevacid, and Zantac. I’ve been reading these testimonials and the answers given back and it seems that most answers state that Nexium is not recommended to be taken longer than six months. If doctors know this then why are so many people being put on it for years. I also have heard that you can have surgery to correct acid reflux but my dr. says that if the medicine works they don’t want you to have the surgery. He stated because the surgery to tighten the flap in your throat will weaken again several years later and you will be back where you were. I personally think if that is true that it is the insurance companies that do not want to pay for the surgery. I have been having back and hip pain for several years and recently had an MRI and was told I had 2 herniated disc. I now wonder if my pain is being caused by the nexium…Would appreciate any suggestions…thanks,
AskDocWeb: Less than 1% of Nexium users experience back pain but it is a reported side effect. It is a fact that the pills cost less than surgery. So what are we to do when treating the symptoms is cheaper than curing the condition or disease? If anyone has a good answer to that then you have our support for the next election.
Subj: 5 year old taking Nexium
My 5 yr old daughter has been taking Nexium for 2 yrs. When we try to change her to a lesser medicine (prevacid & prilosec) she displays reflux symptoms immediately. Yet if I forget a does of nexium she seems ok. Should we be trying to wean her from the nexium instead of going cold turkey?
AskDocWeb: According to the 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference, the safety and effectiveness of Nexium for the treatment of symptomatic GERD in patients less than 12 years old have not been established. Please consult with your health care provider.
Subj: Nexium for nausea?
My dr. had suggested taking NEXIUM for my nausea, but I’ve already been tested for a stomach alcer which was negative and I don’t have any acid reflux problems so I’m hesitant to take it. Do people usually use it for nausea, I’ve read that it could actually cause it. Thanks,
AskDocWeb: Nausea is a common side effect of Nexium and is listed as one of the signs that may indicate a need for dosage adjustment.
Subj: Elevated blood gastrin levels
I’ve been on Nexium for about a year and like some of my fellow Nexium users I too have experienced some weight gain as well as minor pain in the upper abdomen and on each side, my back about the base of the rib cage. But my question is a little different. A little over a month ago I asked the doctor to order a blood test to measure my gastrin levels. The test came back at 101 pmol/L. She reordered the blood work last week and the results came back at 168 pmol/L. Has there been evidence that Nexium can cause elevated blood gastrin levels?
AskDocWeb: During treatment with antisecretory drugs the serum gastrin increases in response to the decreased acid secretion. In the clinical trials for Nexium, there were dose-related increases in mean fasting gastrin levels which reached plateaus at 2 to 3 months and returned to previously established baseline 4 weeks after the drug was discontinued. According to the manufacturer of Nexium, less than 1% of patients were reported to have hypergastrinemia or GI dysplasia. Historically, Nexium has been given for as long as 5 years without concern for the development of gastric neoplasia. The overall risk of carcinoid tumors during therapy with PPIs is low and monitoring of serum gastrin levels during PPI therapy is generally not necessary.
Decreased gastric acidity due to any means including PPIs, increases gastric counts of bacteria normally present in the gastrointestinal tract. Treatment with PPIs may lead to slightly increased risk of gastrointestinal infections such as Salmonella and Campylobacter.
Subj: Enlarged abdomen
After taking Nexium for 2 weeks, I noticed my abdomen was quite enlarged. It went from a 32 waist to a 40 waistline. After reading other peoples comments about weight gain, I am pretty upset since I am usually a medium built man that now looks pregnant. Any comments?
AskDocWeb: Only to suggest that you talk to your doctor about possible alternatives. Read more feedback about Nexium.
