Subj: Stomach erosion
Date: 7/21/2009
I’ve been on nexium for several years. A year ago I started having stomach discomfort. I got an EGD and found that I have stomach erosion. Doubled the dose of nexium for one year, this week had another egd and found worse erosion. The Doctor is baffled. He decided to change my med to prevocit. Anyone else experience this problem? Heartburn from reflux is gone but now have stomach erosion.

Subj: Apple vinegar
Date: 7/24/2009
I also found that my face was getting face lately and I did like any pictures of me because it looked so bloated. My husband reminded me that in the Natural Cures book by Kevin Trudeau, he said take apple vinegar because you really need more acid, not less. While on vacation for a week, I stopped taking Nexium and took 2 tablespoons of vinegar (with water) with each meal. It’s only been two weeks and the entire reflux feeling has not gone away completely yet but I can live with it. However, the best thing was that I loved the picture we took that first week, and I swear my face is not fat anymore. And that was just the first week. I’m gonna stick with the apple vinegar for now.

Subj: Bone density has become worse
Date: 7/29/2009
Since taking Nexium for 2 1/2 years due to a bad reaction to osteoporosis drugs, my bone density has become worse for the hip. I have been taking calcium supplements, but now read that nexium blocks calcium absorption and increases bone fractures. How can I take both without negative effects?
Jane
AskDocWeb: Many people are taking a calcium supplement such as calcium citrate but if you are considering this check with your doctor first, especially if you take thyroid hormones, corticosteroids, tetracycline, or iron pills. Calcium supplements can interfere with the function of these drugs.
Subj: Breathlessness, weight gain, and affect on voice
Date: 7/28/2009
I am 56 and have been taking Nexium (1 pill daily) for 6-7 years for heartburn and GERD. I have tried to go off of it several times but my heartburn always won that battle and I went back on it again. My voice has become gravely and it is increasingly hard for me to speak properly. Part of this is because of the breathlessness that others have mentioned. Other people notice my hoarseness and difficulty speaking and comment on it. I too have I have gained 20 lbs, and can’t seem to lose it, and notice that I want to eat all the time. I frequently notice the metallic taste also mentioned.
Four days ago I decided to try to go off Nexium again. This time I have a strategy that seems to be working so far. I have learned that bananas are very soothing to the stomach, so for breakfast I have a banana. I also have 1/2 cup of Rice Dream (rice “milk” found in the diary case) which is also soothing and contains no dairy products which can be irritating. For other meals I eat small quantities and select only foods that I know are not problematic for me (no red meat, citrus juice, chocolate, etc). So far I am not suffering. When I begin to feel a little burn I reach for ice water. Drinking water also helps me feel full and neutralizes that nagging craving for food. Its too early to tell for sure, but I feel that my voice has improved a little.
I would like to know if anyone else has found certain foods to be soothing. It would be great to find a list or a diet containing foods that would help us wean from the Nexium. Is there any conclusion or suspicion about whether Nexium can affect the voice?
Lorna
AskDocWeb: No, Nexium hasn’t been reported to have any affect on the voice. It is more likely that the GERD has an affect the voice. Making a list of foods that are soothing sounds like a worthwhile thing to do. Let’s start with the following;
- Acidophilus supplements
- Apples
- Chamomile
- Fruits
- Ginger tea
- Grapefruit
- Honey
- Ice cream
- Mint
- Raw apple cider vinegar
- Vegetables
- Wholegrain breads
- Wholegrain Cereals
- Yogurt
If the list grows too long we will make it a separate page. Feel free to add your suggestions.
Subj: Anxiety, irritability, constipation, and burning
Date: 7/30/2009
I have been on Nexium 2(40) since Feb for about a month, after that 1 (40) mg a day at night. The endosocopy said no ulcer or other infections just GERD. July 21 I was in emergency with the same pain, so they double my nexium dose to 2(40) again. Side effects are anxiety, irritablility, constipation but burning in my abdomen, chest an arms, top of feet. In emergency, they put me on Buscipan (muscle relaxer) to deal with this pain. It has now been 6 days on nexium and still feel burning sensation and uncomfortableness at night, sleep very little, awaken by the burn every hour on the hour, even with the buscipan. I am so afraid to change PPI, will I loose any benifits the nexium gained, I am at 80 mg of nexium a day, if they switch me to a lower dose of 60 mg or less will it work? Why would I have symptoms return, especially if I was always on this med since Feb. Should I change my PPI, I am so afraid to spend another two weeks hoping it will work.
Janet
AskDocWeb: Changes in diet can have a significant affect on your symptoms. It may be worth your while to pay more attention to your diet to identify foods that may cause problems. Some people keep a diet diary listing the time, what is eaten, and the symptoms noticed between meals. Eating too close to bedtime can increase nighttime problems.
Subj: Calcium absorption
Date: 7/30/2009
Does nexium effect on calcium absorption decrease in 24hrs? Will taking calcium before the next nexium dosage and waiting an hour be better absorbed than taking it after the first dose?
Jane
AskDocWeb: So far we have not seen this issue addressed in studies but it is worth considering.
Subj: How long does it take?
Date: 8/2/2009
I have been on nexim for 5 years, and now having a lot of side effects, the most serious problem is my stomach seems not digesting food now, I really worry about it, I have stopped using it for 2 days now, can anyone please tell me how long does it take the nexim to leave your system? Will my stomach get back to normal?
May
AskDocWeb: The half-life of Nexium ranges from one to one and a half hours, it varies by individual. That’s the amount of time for half of the drug to leave your system.
Subj: Midsternal pain
Date: 8/4/2009
I’m 38 year old female, been on Nexium 40mg for years for heartburn and reflux. I have recently had midsternal pain, it isn’t severe, but it’s there. It doesn’t seem to last, often relieved by flatulation. (I have had this ‘feeling’ near my sternum many times, but it scares me and I feel like I may be ignoring symptoms of Heart attack. Is this typical of heart burn and reflux/GERD? Again, no severe pain, no radiation to other parts of body, ect. Help. Thanks,
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: The pain of GERD is so similar to that of a heart attack that it was originally called heartburn. It is best to be safe so check with your doctor to remove any doubts you may have. This type of worry just adds to your stress and that makes the GERD worse.
Subj: Burning and tingling
Date: 8/8/2009
Not sure what is going on. I’ve only taken two Nexium. Last night was my second. When I went to lay down for the night, my hands and feet were burning and tingling. Today they have been warm all day. My hands and feet are usually cold. My throat is also a little raw, but that could be from the Gerd. Right now, the burning is going away and I hate to say it, but my carpel tunnel feels like it has been relieved slightly. I’m not sure what is going on, but could this have anything to do with my circulation? I also took a B12 to see if they would stop the tingling effects (I take a supplement)…
Michelle
AskDocWeb: It may have something to do with circulation but several people have also reported burning, numbness, and tingling sensations in their hands, legs, and feet.
Subj: Bowel problems, weight gain and NO sex drive
Date: 8/12/2009
I have been on Nexium 40mg. once a day for at least 5 years, Oh I have acid reflux. My body actually produces way too much acid. Anyway up until recently have had no problem, but have noticed a increase in bowel problems, weight gain and NO sex drive, also seem to be forgetting alot of things. Is this normal or should I be concerned?
Gina
AskDocWeb: That is not the typical response to Nexium. It sounds like it may be time for a physical or at least a checkup.
Subj: What else can one take?
Date: 8/14/2009
I have been on Nexium for a year now. I went through 9 months of having diarrhea and it went away for about 3 months and is back now. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy and they said I had colitis but kept me on the Nexium. What else can one take that’s natural to help Gerd so we can get off these meds that the doctors don’t tell you that cause all that they do?
Cindy
AskDocWeb: Colitis is a general term for inflammation of the large intestine, which can refer to either one of the irritable bowel syndromes but it can also mean one of the more serious long-term bowel diseases. The most natural treatment may consist of reducing stress and limiting the diet to bland foods and less roughage than usual. Because of the range of responses that people have to different foods, a diet may be created for each patient.
Subj: Ringing in ears and weight gain
Date: 8/15/2009
I have been on nexium about a year I have severe ringing in my ears and have gained alot of weight, is this possible? My doctor also told me that it also interferes with plavix which I am takeing.
Clifford
AskDocWeb: Tinnitus (that ringing is your ears) occurs in less than 1% of Nexium users. Several people have noticed a weight gain even with no changes to diet.
Subj: Cardiac issues with long-term use?
Date: 8/15/2009
I have been taking 40 mg. of Nexium 2X per day for the last 9 mos. for break-through acid reflux. For the last 3 evenings, I stopped taking my 2nd dose, and I have been doing very well… Is there a need to taper off of this medication? …And, is it dangerous not to do so…? Also, I’ve read different articles regarding Nexium potentially causing cardiac issues with long-term use. Would you be able to clarify if this is indeed a fact or something that is currently being researched?
Victoria
AskDocWeb: The FDA is currently investigating possible cardiac issues as well as possible pneumonia and bone loss with PPIs. We have not read anywhere of a need to taper off of Nexium.
Subj: Liver enzymes are 3x above normal
Date: 8/16/2009
I’ve been on Nexium for years (Prilosec before that) with no ill effects–however–over the last year, my liver enzymes have risen–and are now 3x above normal. All hepatitis tests are negative–am going for a sonogram next month. Could Nexium be contributing to this problem? I’m also taking two diabetes drugs and three blood pressure drugs. Any feedback will be appreciated!
Bonnie
AskDocWeb: While a couple of people have posted about elevated liver enzymes it has not been connected to Nexium. When cells in the liver become sick or die the enzymes leak out of the cells causing the blood level of these enzymes to rise. Although liver enzymes are sensitive indicators of damage it must be emphasized that higher-than-normal levels of liver enzymes does not always mean liver damage. The interpretation of elevated liver enzymes depends on the whole clinical picture and is best interpreted by doctors experienced in evaluating liver disease. If there is liver damage then your body may not be eradicating toxins as it should, which may cause a buildup of drugs in your system. Read more feedback about Nexium.
