Subj: Change my diet?
Date: 10/1/2009
I was diagnosed with gastritis and my doctor put me on Nexium. It helped almost immediately with my stomach pains. It has been almost a week since I started taking it, and now I’m getting bad stomach pains again. Do I need to change my diet as well to keep the stomach pains away?

Michelle

AskDocWeb: Sometimes making a small change in your diet can result in a big change in how you feel. If you keep track of what food and drink you consume before suffering acid reflux, you may be able to find out what triggers the reflux and eliminate those things from your diet.

Subj: Abdominal pain
Date: 10/1/2009
I have been taking Nexium for about a week now. A couple days ago I accidently took advil 20 minutes after I took nexium not realizing it. MY ABDOMINAL PAINS ARE INCREDIBLE!!! About an hour after eating a meal, I can’t even talk without feeling like I’m about to throw up and for about 3 hours after eating I’m nauseous. In addition, I have yeast in my colon and this is preventing me from pooping. (I was prescribed Nexium in the first place for the colon infection which I’m not even sure is right) Any ideas?

Michael

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need to check back with your doctor as soon as possible.

Subj: Levothyroxine needs gastric acid for absorption
Date: 10/2/2009
Have been taking levothyroxine for years. Just started on Nexium, for GERD, this April. I am a runner and in July started noticing indigestion feeling in my chest for the first part of my workouts. It is not angina. My doctor told me that it was okay to take both medications at the same time, because they both demand an hour’s wait before eating. Finally, yesterday, stopped taking the Nexium. Have started to notice signs of relief from the indigestion feeling. THEN I found out that levothyroxine needs gastric acid for absorption. Will look for other ways around the GERD.

Subj: Healing powers
Date: 10/4/2009
I switched from Prilosec to Nexium two years ago in hopes of helping heal an irritated esophagus that was causing spasms, hiccups and difficulty swallowing. The problems cleared up and have not returned and I have experienced no negative side effects. I typically take 40 mg. of Nexium each day. To be honest, I always suspected that Nexium was more or less identical to Prilosec and was being marked purely because Prilosec went over the counter and the manufacturer needed to replace lost revenue. However, I have now concluded that Nexium truly has the advertised “healing powers” that Prilosec lacks.

Subj: Stomach problems
Date: 10/4/2009
I’ve been having stomach problems for over a month now, at first the doctor thought it was a stomach bug and prescribed me promethazine and generic zantac, when I came back almost a month later he told me to take Prilosec in the AM and the generic zantac at night but after 9 days of Prilosec it was only about 50% helpful so he gave me a prescription of Nexium to take (and told me to stop taking Prilosec). It has been about 3 days of Nexium in the morning and generic zantac at night and my symptoms have gotten worse. I’ve been suffering from lots and lots of gas bubbles, acid burps, stomach pains, and bouts of extreme nausea. I’m only 20, how long should I wait to see if Nexium works? Should I be seeking help from a specialist?

Kristina

AskDocWeb: According to the patient insert, some patients who have not healed after 4 weeks may need another 4-8 weeks of treatment with Nexium. You may want to consult with a gastric specialist, a gastroenterologist.

Subj: Nexium and Viagra?
Date: 10/16/2009
Does Nexium and Viagra mix well?

J.

AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any interactions listed for these two drugs but there were a couple of side notes you may want to keep in mind if you are taking both drugs. The manufacturer of Nexium reports that taking Nexium with food may interfere with the absorption of this drug by up to 53%. That is a reduction in effectiveness if taken with food. The other note was on Viagra: Taking Viagra with grapefruit juice may increase the affect to the point of toxicity and may also delay in the onset of action.

Subj: Irritation of the urethra
Date: 10/16/2009
The day after I started Nexium for acid reflux, I developed irritation of the urethra. I am wondering if the Nexium is the cause because it reduces acid in your stomach and passes out the urethra, possibly changing the PH level as it goes. The vagina and urethra is normally an acid environment. Anyone else noticed this side effect?

Kay

AskDocWeb: Abnormal urine and fungal infections are listed as a rare possible side effect (less than one percent) for Nexium.

Subj: Nexium impotence?
Date: 10/16/2009
I have been on Nexium for 5 years now continuously and recently I have started experiencing decreased sexual desire…and now impotence….do u think it could be related….cannot find an answer, am 41 and with two kids…

Rowni

AskDocWeb: We could find only 2 reports of Nexium involving decreased sexual desire. When you consider the millions of doses taken each year, the chance of an unrelated side effect occurring is quite high. We suspect that those reports are only a coincidence.

Subj: Bad breath?
Date: 10/18/2009
Does acid reflux cause bad breath? I stopped taking my Nexium in case that was the problem, but there was no change. My dentist and my ENT see nothing that could be causing the problem. I scrape my tongue and use special mouthwash and toothpaste. Nothing works. Is there anything else I could try?

Callie

AskDocWeb: If you have acid reflux, there are several ways this can cause bad breath. First is the digestive acid that is refluxed up into the esophagus. This has an odor as well as a foul taste. Once the esophagus and throat are damaged, they too can be a source of bad breath from the burned tissues. If you eat a strong smelling meal, such as one containing garlic and onions, the odors from the foods are more likely to cause bad breath because of the acid reflux. Nexium is also on the list of causes for Taste Perversion.

Subj: Iron absorption
Date: 10/19/2009
I have used 40mg of Nexium for two years. In the last year my iron count is dropping even with one-a-day and iron supplement. It is now at 27 with 60 a recommended guideline for women. I read that prescription meds that reduce acid in the stomach can interfere with iron absorption. Is this true of nexium? Nexium has helped me tremedously…I would hate to have to stop using it.

Karen

AskDocWeb: It is known that stomach acid is required for the absorption of iron and Nexium does reduce that acid but it does not neutralize all of it. Nexium has not been associated with iron depletion or anemia in people with normal iron stores. Those who have an existing anemic condition before taking Nexium, need to make sure that their doctor is fully informed about their condition.

Subj: Nexium side effects
Date: 10/21/2009
I am 28 years old, and have been put back on Nexium after a flare up of acid reflux. I’ve been on it for about two weeks now. During the last couple days I have noticed that the lower abdomen gets irritated. In addition, my bones feel a little loose. I’ve been taking calcium carbonate supplements and B12. Overall it has been helping, but am wondering if this side effect has been documented. I was on Nexium for 3 months almost a year ago and stopped because symptoms abated.

Gary

AskDocWeb: Abdominal pain is well documented in the clinical trials for Nexium. However, there is no documentation that refers to loose bones. Before taking calcium supplements it is important to check with your doctor, especially if you are taking thyroid hormones, corticosteroids, tetracycline, or iron pills. Calcium supplements can interfere with the function of these drugs.

Subj: Decided to discontinue Nexium
Date: 10/22/2009
I was prescribed Nexium on 10/14/09 (first day of taking drug). This is after many years of taking Zantac which has worked fine, but I was up to about 2-4 150mg pills a day. Within 7 days of taking Nexium I began to feel a dull pain in my lower right abdomen, A slight sore throat and last night I laid in bed with tingling feet. All of these symptoms I have read about on line. As of today I have decided to discontinue the Nexium, consult my doctor and return to Zantac.

Subj: Alternatives for Nexium?
Date: 10/30/2009
I am on Nexium 20mg for 1 year now. I had a few small bleeding ulcers last October that were treated. This last week my nausea and burping have come back with a vengeance as well as periodic sharp pains in my stomach. The symptoms I am having now are the same ones I had when the ulcers were detected. Is there another medication that does a better job than Nexium. I too, have ringing in the ears, and have noticed a weight gain even though I eat better now than ever. I do not want to continue with these side effects but the symptoms of ulcers are horrible!

Michelle

AskDocWeb: No one drug works better than another for everyone. The alternatives may include Aciphex, Axid, Pepcid, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix, Tagamet, Zantac, and Zegerid.

Subj: Nexium helps alot but STILL
Date: 11/2/2009
does nexium give you gas? I am taking it and it helps alot but I STILL GET A STOMACH ACHE, BLOATING AND GAS EVEN AFTER EAIN JUST A LITTLE BIT, THANK YOU

Sheila

AskDocWeb: Yes, gas (flatulence) is one of the possible side effects. A small percentage of patients report stomach ache or abdominal pain and bloating.

Subj: Total symptom relief with no side effects
Date: 11/9/2009
I was diagnosed with GERD at least 10 years ago and started taking a variety of H2 blockers. I had symptom break throughs with most of the current over the counter medications. About 8 years ago I started Nexium and had total symptom relief with no side effects. When ever I stopped taking Nexium the GERD symptoms would return in a matter of 2-3 days. As a result of this response I have been on this medication for the last 8 years. Luckily my insurance has not quit on support for this medication. I was tested for calcium loss and have normal bone density. I have been on this medication a long time I hope it is OK.

Subj: Anxiety?
Date: 11/10/2009
I just started Nexium yesterday since I was having this weird feeling of fullness even when only eating 1-2 bites of food. And about 7-8 hours after a meal, I’d burp that meal. So, this morning I ate a hearty breakfast (won’t do that again with talk of weight gain), now I have this funny, anxiety feeling in my chest. It’s not painful, just annoying. Does Nexium cause a person to feel anxious? I’ve felt full all day…not hungry at lunch so I just had a yogurt cup. Is anxiety a side effect of Nexium? Thanks.

Sharon

AskDocWeb: No, anxiety is not listed as a side effect of Nexium. Read more feedback about Nexium.
