Subj: Breaking out in hives
Date: 3/15/2006
I’ve been on Nexium for 10 months for acid reflux, and it’s the only medication I take. Three months ago, I started breaking out in itchy hives a couple times a week, one here, one there. My doctor can’t figure out a cause. Can this be attributed to Nexium?

AskDocWeb: If it was an actual allergic reaction you would have hives each time you took the Nexium. Since you only have them a couple of times a week, it sounds like it is something else, something with intermittent exposure. If it continues to be a problem we would make an appointment with an allergist to do some testing.

Subj: Extreme nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
Date: 3/19/2006
I have been taking Nexium for several months; I also take Anaprox (years), Lovastatin (1 wk) Paxil 3yrs). Occasionally over the last several months and frequently over the last two months I have been experiencing extreme nausea (vomiting) and diarrhea. I have Gerd. What do you think?

AskDocWeb: We think you should be examined thoroughly by the appropriate specialist. Sounds like you need to talk to a gastroenterologist.

Subj: Dry mouth
Date: 3/20/2006
Hi, I’m 23 years old, and just started taking nexium for Gerd, (on a trial basis for a month) I’ve noticed that my mouth gets very dry (and I’m only on my 2nd day). I’ve downed about 4 24oz bottles of water and my mouth is still dry. Is this anything to worry about? Should I stop? Thanks,

AskDocWeb: This is a side effect that has bothered many people. You can try chewing gum or sucking on lozenges that may work. If it is something you just cannot deal with, discuss this problem with your physician. Nexium is one of the best products on the market for GERD, others just don’t seem to work as well.

Subj: Ringing in ears
Date: 3/26/2006
Have been on nexium for two years. Developed ringing in my ears or extra sensitivity in my ears? Is that a possible side effect? If so if I stop taking it will it go away? Please,

AskDocWeb: The ringing in your ears (tinnitus) could be caused by another problem so make sure to tell your doctor about it. And yes, Nexium is known to cause this problem in some people. If you discontinue use, it should go away in a couple of days.

Subj: Nauseating feeling
Date: 3/28/2006
I have been taking Nexium for eight months since I had bleeding ulcers and since December I had chronic bronchitis and was hospitalized as I was having spasms in my throat. When I coughed I would gasp for breath and the nurse said I was having anxiety causing my throat to close up and I was given Avian to calm me down but I was than put on Nexium twice a day and I am still having problem. When I cough, at times I feel like I losing my breath. I now have this nauseating feeling all the time. I do not have trouble swallowing or eating but I just feel this feeling sometimes for two days at a time. It will pass than I get it all day again. It can be very depressing feeling this way all the time. Could it be the Nexium? I am on Evista, topral and a fluid pill everyday. Evista is a new pill I have been recently prescribed. I would appreciate your opinion on this sick feeling. Thank You,

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need to see an ear nose and throat specialist in your area. And when you talk to the specialist, tell them what meds you are on.

Subj: Fertility
Date: 3/31/2006
I am taking Nexium 40Mg daily. I was wondering if Nexium could have any effect on my sperm count or my fertility in general. Thanks, for you help.

AskDocWeb: No, it won’t have any effect on your sperm count and has no affect on fertility in general.

Subj: Gained weight on Nexium?
Date: 4/18/2006
I’ve been on nexium for 2 weeks, I hit the gym everyday after work for 2 hours and am not eating fattening food and I gines 2 kilos? Am so upset my doctor told no way that you can gain weight on nexium, is that correct? Please, I need an answer. Thanks in advance,

AskDocWeb: Your doctor is right about most people but not 100% correct. Nexium does cause weight gain for a small number of people, less than 1%, but for those people it is real weight gain.

Subj: Burning, tingling in legs
Date: 4/19/2006
I’ve been on Nexium a good while. Right now I’m having burning, tingling in my legs. Not feet just the calves of my legs. Very uncomfortable. Can this be caused from Nexium?

AskDocWeb: This is not one of the listed side effects of Nexium.

Subj: Terrible stomach pains
Date: 6/18/2006
I have been taking 40 mg of nexium bid, for 3 weeks. However, I started having terrible stomach pains, and cut back to 40 mg a day. Shortly after starting the nexium, my hypertension got worse, and I started having palpitations. Nexium is the only “new” medication that I started, and that is when my symptoms started. I have read that less than 1% of people experienced “rare” side effects during the clinical trials. Is it possible that I fall into that category?

AskDocWeb: Yes it is possible for anyone to be that l%, abdominal pain is one of the listed side effects.

Subj: How long?
Date: 6/19/2006
I had been on nexium for over 4 years until three weeks ago. My doctor took me off of it because I am now having liver problems and my thyroid gland has enlarged. I am going to have blood work done on my liver and have an ultrasound done on my thyroid the last week of august. How long does it nexium to get out of your system once you are off of it?

AskDocWeb: Of course it varies but in general it should be out of your system in 72 hours.

Subj: GERD
Date: 6/20/2006
Have gained 30 pounds in one year on Nexium. Tried to talk to GI regarding this and he denies causality. He in fact increased dosage to 40 mg 2 times per day. I have worked with trainer for 3 months 5x per day…have gained 6 pounds. I need GERD relief provided by Nexium but is there another drug I should try? Protonix hurt my stomach. Also, what to use for esophageal spasms? Already tried stretching.

AskDocWeb: Other drugs used to treat GERD include Aciphex, Axid oral solution, Pepcid, Prevacid, Tagamet, Zantac and Zegerid Powder for oral solution. On the other hand, there have been some reports that taking ibuprofen makes this condition worse.

To get relief form esophageal spasms you might try the old fashion remedy of two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a half a glass of water. Some people report good results from using this twice a day. It’s not the best tasting drink but then medicine is not suppose to taste good. Let us know if this works for you.

Subj: Light headed, dizzy
Date: 6/22/2006
Just took my first Nexium this am and this afternoon around 3:30-4:00 started to feel light headed, dizzy. Could this be a result of Nexium?

AskDocWeb: Those symptoms are not listed as side effects of Nexium but you could be having a bad reaction. Make sure someone is around to keep an eye on you or get to where they can. If you have difficulty breathing or think you may pass out, phone for help.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 6/25/2006
Nexium made me gain weight… lots and lots of weight very quickly… there’s a choice here… be fat or have less pain, good one.

Subj: Hives
Date: 6/25/2006
I’ve been taking nexium about 3 months and breaking out in hives that itch. I’ve been treating with a cream the doctor gave me for about a month. Then I went back and he gave me a shot and a different cream. I think it’s the nexium! Do you have any info on this from others?

AskDocWeb: There have been well documented reports of individuals with a history of penicillin hypersensitivity reactions who have experienced severe reactions when treated with Nexium. This happens in less than one percent of users but it is a real possibility. An adverse reaction such as hives is enough reason to talk to your doctor about an alternative.

Subj: Severe itch on abdomen
Date: 6/28/2006
I have been taking Nexium for 3 weeks and now have developed a severe itch on my abdomen. No rash. Is this a side effect of Nexium

AskDocWeb: Possibly, but it could be caused from something else too. Consult with your physician on this.

Subj: Long-term use of Nexium
Date: 6/28/2006
I have taken Nexium for a couple of years, then stopped because I was cautioned against long-term use, specifically an increased risk of carcinoid tumor. Can you comment on this?

AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard anything about that so far. The main concern with long-term use seems to be the increased risk of pneumonia. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium can make people more susceptible to pneumonia, probably because they reduce germ-killing stomach acid. Users of these drugs faced almost double the risk of developing pneumonia compared with former users.

The acid in normal stomach fluids kills many harmful bacteria. Suppressing this germ killing acid with drugs may make the body more hospitable to such germs, which may then infect the lungs and cause pneumonia.

Since older patients and those with asthma or other chronic lung ailments are especially vulnerable to pneumonia they should use these medicines “only when necessary and with the lowest possible dose.”

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) include:

  • Aciphex (rabeprazole)
  • Losec (omeprazole)
  • Nexium (esomeprazole)
  • Pantoloc (pantoprazole)
  • Prevacid (lansoprazole)
  • Prilosec (omeprazole)
  • Protonix (pantoprazole)

Subj: Gall bladder
Date: 7/2/2006
I have been on Nexium 40 for about 3 years. It works great for me. However, I am now recovering from an emergency operation to remove my gall bladder. My surgeon said after the surgery that it was very unusual to see a gall bladder as infected and cause such a severe attack as mine. I am wondering if the Nexium may have masked earlier signs of gall stones or other gall bladder problems? Thanks,

AskDocWeb: Nexium could have masked some nausea but it would not have masked other symptoms such as fever, chills, etc. that may have been present. Read more feedback about Nexium.
