Subj: Gained a lot of weight
Date: 5/12/2010
I’ve been on nexium (twice a day) for almost four months now and its really helped me due to acid reflux, but I did notice that I gained alot of weight now that I take nexium, could it be the pill?

Victoria

AskDocWeb: It could be, Nexium has been reported to cause weight gain in some people and weight loss in others. Judging by the feedback we receive here, weight gain is much more likely than weight loss.

Subj: Rash around stomach
Date: 5/14/2010
Started Nexium about 2 weeks ago. Brok out in rash, especially around my stomach. Didn’t think much about it but it went into the second week. I decided to take benedryl and stop the Nexium. Called doctor, he said he had never heard of this side effect. Since then, I’ve seen several posting on web confirming my symptoms. I’ve stopped the Nexium and really frightened to take any of the other medications.

Carolyn

AskDocWeb: Another possibility to consider is that the rash may something unrelated. There are over 1100 causes listed for a rash.

Subj: Osteoporosis
Date: 5/16/2010
I have taken Previcid for 15 years.. and my last bone density test results were great.. I am 58 F, with osteoarthritis and Lupus.. and the medications I was given to help these health issues were causing the GERD.. so the Previcid was prescribed. I feel that if the average age of the research group was 77, maybe there is a scare tactic in the researchers findings. As we age naturally our bodies change and bones and skin change.. so I don’t think that I would stop taking my Meds because of this particular research.. just my opinion. However, my sister has taken the Nexium for a number of years, and was diagnosed with Osteoporosis and her bones are just like lace.. very fragile.. she is not 77.. much younger.. and was on Forteo for the 18 months allowed, daily. This was to build the bones but.. her osteoporosis is Severe. Could this be a genetic thing or has the Nexium added to her problem? Her health care provider has given us many other factors that can be attributed to osteoporosis.. Smoking, Genetic predisposition, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and other medications that have the same cause and effect as the Nexium..so..again, before I would go off the Nexium, I would be leary as to the exact cause of the osteoporosis diagnoises… Thanks for having this forum for us to share our opinions.

Subj: Lightheaded, palpitations, diarrhea
Date: 5/19/2010
I was on Nexium for several years when I started to get lightheaded, palpitations, diarrhea. Doctor did all kinds of tests and couldn’t find anything wrong. I just had this feeling of not being well. Decided to stop the Nexium and after about a week I was back to my normal self. I stayed of the drug for about a year but my acid reflux was getting worst so I went back on Nexium thinking that maybe it was just a coincidence that it was the Nexium that caused all the trouble. Well, I was on it for another 2 years when it started happening again, all the same symptoms, so I stopped taking it again. I’m off it now for about 2 weeks and I’m getting back to my old self again. I’ve was told you should not be on any PPI for long periods of time. Have you heard tell of this form other people?

M

AskDocWeb: Diarrhea is listed as one of the possible side effects of Nexium but lightheadedness is not. Palpitations or an irregular heartbeat is listed as a possible side effect that should be immediately reported to your doctor.

Subj: RAPID weight gain
Date: 5/21/2010
I am just now realizing that nexium is causing RAPID weight gain! I have been taking it for 4 months I went from 133 pounds to 147 pounds…i thought i was pregnant? I am not pregnant. I have been starving, walking, drinking water like crazy to try and lose weight. The only thing different was this Nexium. Now I found this site and I am really mad that the doctor did not warn me about this. I am depressed! None of my clothes fit me. I am not taking this stuff anymore!!!

Emily

AskDocWeb: Rapid weight gain should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Med equal to Nexium?
Date: 5/22/2010
I have a hiatus hernia and suffer with heartburn and reflux. My Ins. company refused to pay for my Neium this time when I went to fill it. I haven’t found anything else that works for me. Do you know of a med that is equel to Nexium?

Betty

AskDocWeb: It is not exactly equal to Nexium but you could ask your doctor about Prilosec OTC, OTC Omeprazole, or Prevacide.

Subj: Numbness in hands and feet
Date: 5/23/2010
I have been on Nexium for about 6 months. I have numbness in my hands and sometimes my feet. I exercise by walking 30 min. a day, which has ALWAYS kept my weight down along with being mostly a vegetarian. I have gained 7.5 lbs. in 6 months to my dismay. Have to urinate at least 10x’s a day. My eyesight (I am 68) has suffered as well after many years of no changes; I get hot flashes for the first time in 20 years; I get leg cramps as well.

I have stopped taking the drug as of yesterday. I DO take Pine Nut Oil and it has done more for my gastritis than anything else. Plus it is not only soothing, but supposedly has healing properties. I have found this to be true in that my pain is gone. I do know what I can and cannot eat and prefer to help myself more naturally. Good luck to all of you out there.

Subj: Side effects
Date: 5/25/2010
I was prescribed Nexium 40 mg at the same time as being started on Teva-sertraline 50 mg. It is difficult to tell which medicine is making feel like I have an empty, kind of knotted, vacant and slightly irritated motion in my stomach. It is like upset, not painful but irritating stomach fullness. That, along with the feeling of wanting for a moment throw up when I swollow. There is a slight issue of tiredness and sometimes a lack of focus/attention. I have had the stomach issue only for a week or so. Thank you

Richard

AskDocWeb: That feeling of wanting to throw up (nausea) is a possible side effects of both drugs. Fatigue is not listed for Nexium but it is a possible side effect of sertraline.

Subj: Other antacids?
Date: 5/26/2010
I have had acid reflux for about two years, but never got it checked until recently since I have been having the feeling of wanting to vomit every time I eat. I feel nauseous and weak. I have lab work and blood work scheduled within the next couple weeks. Prilosec didn’t work at all for me. In the meantime, my doctor gave me samples of nexium. I took it for the first time this morning. I ate lunch earlier today, and felt like I wanted to vomit in the middle of eating again. The acid reflux is almost unbearable, so I called me doctor. She told me to take 2 tablespoons of maalox and take a zantac at night and to continue my nexium in the morning. Does that sound a bit much to you? I am paranoid about taking too many medicines. I hope I find a solution soon because this is interfering with my work life, and my every day life. It’s absolutely miserable!

Tiffani

AskDocWeb: The instructions do say that other antacids may be used while taking Nexium. They do not interfere with drug effectiveness.

Subj: Drop me lines about Nexium
Date: 5/26/2010
I am scared to take nexium now and I been taking it for more then 10 years and had the surgery for reflux and then they said I still had it so they doubled it to 2 40 mil a day. Now I hear all this stuff and I been so sick I cant work or anything. Now I am scared to keep taking it; people drop me lines about it if you’d like to help me make up my mind quit now or is all the damage already done; and the little relief I get worth keeping on taking it.

Subj: Suggestions on improving the outcome
Date: 5/26/2010
I have been on nexium for many years now due to having barret’s esophagus. My father died of esophageal cancer at 38 – I was diagnosed at 28 and am now 43. I have had huge struggles with my weight and with hair loss since being on the medication but truly it is the only one that seems to work. Are there any studies or suggestions on improving the outcome or I guess lessening these types of side – effects? I feel like I have lost my pretty years to this and want to be healthy – not get cancer but also feel good about myself – help! Thank you!

Amy

AskDocWeb: There are changes you can make to your diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes that may help lessen side effects of Nexium. There may also be other treatments available in order to control the symptoms so talk with your doctor.

Subj: Class action suit?
Date: 5/27/2010
Bottom line is I have been taking Nexium for since 2002(I am 62yrs). In November 2009 a bone fracture occurred in my foot and I (and my doctors) could not understand why it happen. In a news program this week, FDA announced linkages between fractures bones and Nexium. Will there be a class action suit on this?

Christine

AskDocWeb: We have already seen several law firms advertising for clients so it seems likely. In case readers missed it, yesterday the FDA warned that acid inhibitors like Nexium, Prilosec, Aciphex, Prevacid, Vimovo, Zegerid, and Protonix may cause fractures when used at high doses for more than a year.

Subj: So far so good
Date: 6/2/2010
I am on day 2 of my Nexium and have no side-effects! So far so good. Have had 2 x lap nissen procedures in 6 years and my acid just never stops. I have gastritis and pin pricks of bleeding in my stomach. No Baretts and no H-Pyolori. Hope this is my cure. Thanks for an excellent forum.

Subj: How long to wait before exercise
Date: 6/5/2010
Can someone please advise how long I need to wait before I can exercise after taking nexium? I trained on one occasion about an hour after taking nexium, and I experienced shortness of breath, nausea and severe fatigue. Please advise.

Subj: Long-term user
Date: 6/7/2010
As AskDocWeb says, it is always best to see your own doctor B4 changing or going off the dose of nexium. I am a long term user having been on it since 1992. I was started on 20 mg per day and recently had to be taken up to 40 mg per day. I have read pretty much all of the so-called expert “natural healing tablets” and “cures” and having tried quite a few of them my-self, have always had to return to my own G.P. and have had to go back onto Nexium having done more damage to my-self. People sticking a tube down your throat isn’t the nicest thought, but it sure beats the hell out off throwing up every time I got up in the morning and every time I ate some thing spicy or jumped around too much with the children and others in my family. Hope this helps.
