Subj: Non-productive cough and shortness of breath
Date: 7/27/2010
I have been taking Nexium about 2 1/2 years. In the last 6 months I have had a non-productive cough, like a smokers cough(I don’t smoke). Have been on couple inhalers now a steroid inhaler. Cough calmed down but now have shortness of breath to point of gasping for air. Dr. thinks it may be from Nexium??
Jennie
AskDocWeb: Yes, difficulty breathing is listed as one of the possible side effects of Nexium.
Subj: Gallbladder function
Date: 8/2/2010
I have been taking Nexium for about three years. Now, after a gallbladder attack I have been diagnosed with chronic cholecystitis. The HIDA test eject fraction = 6% (Normal is greater than 35%). I found a medical study saying that using PPIs in a long term reduces gallbladder eject fraction. Do you think if I stop taking Nexium that will recover my gallbladder function? Thank you.
AK
AskDocWeb: There is at least one study (Mitchell A. Cahan, MD, University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill) that shows discontinuation of PPI therapy for reflux disease resulted in normalization of preoperative biliary dyskinesia in a significant number of patients.
The gallbladder is a sac that holds bile coming from the liver. The body uses this bile to help digest (break down) the fats that you eat. A gallbladder ejection fraction test measures how much bile leaves the gallbladder when it contracts (squeezes) and empties. This test is also be called cholecystokinin (koh-lee-sis-toh-KEYE-nin)-choleskintigraphy (koh-lee-skin-TIG-rah-fee), or CCK-CS. A normal gallbladder ejection fraction ranges between 35% and 75%.
Subj: joint pains
Date: 8/3/2010
I have been taking nexium for past three weeks for acid reflux. My symptoms are a lot better now. I have just now developed joint pains. Is it something to worry about?
Salim
AskDocWeb: Joint pain is listed as one of rare possible side effects of Nexium. According to the manufacturer, it affects less than 1 in 1000 people. However, it is something to discuss with your doctor.
Subj: Weak, drowsy, mouth dry and bitter
Date: 8/4/2010
I started using Nexium Hp7 this morning, 20 minutes before breakfast, then 20 minutes before dinner. The reason I chosen before meal is to allow time for Nexium itself to work effectively to stop acid, as it’s the Nexium help preventing acid production to allow stomach to cure. The other 2 antibiotics are to kill the bacteria. First day reactions, more gas produced, not sure that’s because the bacteria are disturbed by the antibiotics. I felt very weak and bit drowsy, mouth dry and bitter. Somehow, the mouth feel bit more clear, not as sticky as before.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 8/4/2010
Nexium does cause weight gain, and several other awful side effect. I don’t know where the 1% of reporting comes from. I have told my dr. about the symptoms but don’t know if they report it to anyone. Are these figures only noted when they are studying the drug? Have tried all of the proton pump inhibitors and have had the same problem. Very discouraged.
Kelly
AskDocWeb: When you report adverse effects to your doctor, that helps your doctor improve their practice but they are not required to report your symptoms to the FDA. Once a drug is put on the market it is up to patients to file after market reports of adverse effects. You can report serious problems directly to the FDA by phone at 1-800-332-1088.
Subj: Nexium experience
Date: 8/4/2010
I’ve been on nex for 6 months and has helped. I also have a gall stone that needs to be removed. I stop taking nex for 2 weeks and had a very bad pain under my rib cages as if someone hit me on a bruised area, and traveled to my back. Ended up in ER but went away in 3 hours. So I went back on nex and all is ok. I lost weight. But only because I now watch what I eat. I believe just because you are on nexium dont mean you can eat all that bad stuff. You still have to eat good foods to make it work. Because of the gall stone, I can not eat no greasy foods or spices. And I’ve learn(ed) to eat the proper foods. Its all what you eat. I know I have the gastritis problem and the gall stone so I watch what I eat and lost weight and have no pains.
I would still like to get a scope done cause I too would like to get off the nex if I can. But first I’m schedule to get the gall bladder removed then we will see about the nex. One thing at a time. Oh, when I was off the nex. I took a 1/2 glass of warm water to one teaspoon of baking soda and drank that and walked around and make yourself burp. This is what it’s all about BURPING THE GAS OUT. If you dont burp it dont help. NEVER eat and go lay down or sleep. Wait an hour or so before you sleep. Baking soda sure helped me! Until I got back on the nex. Every time I decide to eat something spicy or bad, I still drink the baking soda and it helps me! Doesn’t hurt to try it. Hope this may help.

Subj: Weight gain?
Date: 8/13/2010
I have just started to take Nexium 20mg. I have just lost quite a lot of weight, reading all these reviews I am worried about the weight gain side affects. Dose this happen to everybody?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: Both weight gain and weight loss are listed by the manufacturer as occurring in less than 1% of those using Nexium.
Subj: Unexplained weight gain
Date: 8/14/2010
I have been taking Nezium for 4 or more years for a diagnosed ‘stomach ulcer’ following a ‘Scope’….until today it has never occured to me that my unexplained weight gain might be directly connected to this medication…I have put on approx 2 stone. I am hoping the ‘Ulcer’ is now healed, and I can discontinue this medication…. Is there a similar product that is not associated with weight gain? What is your recommendation?
H (Please do not print my full name)
AskDocWeb: Full names are never published here so you are safe in that regard. Unfortunately long-term treatment with all proton pump inhibitors have been associated with undesired weight gain. (Source: World Journal of Gastroenterol 2009 October 14; 15(38): 4794-4798)

Subj: Gastroparesis
Date: 8/17/2010
I have been taking Nexium for GERD, esophagitis and gastris for 3 months and it seems to be helping gradually. However it seems it has caused gastroparesis, as I am not eating regularly as I used to. The problem is I have lots of appetite but cannot eat when I want to because the stomach is still full. What do I do?
Kate
AskDocWeb: Consult with your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Gastroparesis can be diagnosed with tests such as x rays, manometry, and gastric emptying scans. The clinical definition for gastroparesis is based solely on the emptying time of the stomach and not on other symptoms. The severity of the symptoms doesn’t necessarily correlate with the severity of the condition. Therefore, some patients may have marked gastroparesis with few, if any, serious complications.
The possible treatments for gastroparesis includes dietary changes (low-fiber and low-residue diets, and in some cases, restrictions on fat and/or solids), oral medications such as Metoclopramide (Reglan, Maxolon, Clopra), Cisapride (Propulsid), Erythromycin (E-Mycin, Erythrocin, Ery-Tab, EES) and Domperidone (Motilium); adjustments in insulin dosage for those with diabetes, a jejunostomy tube, parenteral nutrition, implanted gastric neurostimulators (“stomach pacemakers”), botulinum toxin, or Mirtazapine.
Note that there are possible complications of gastroparesis, which include:
- Bacterial infection due to overgrowth in undigested food
- Fluctuations in blood glucose level due to unpredictable digestion times
- General malnutrition due to the symptoms of the disease as well as the dietary changes necessary to manage it
- Intestinal obstruction due to the formation of solid masses of undigested food
- Severe fatigue and weight loss due to calorie deficit
Most gastroparesis sufferers are female. One possible explanation for this is that women generally have a slower stomach emptying time than men. There is also a possible hormonal link as gastroparesis symptoms tend to worsen the week before menstruation, when progesterone levels are highest. However, neither theory has been proven.
Subj: Half-life of Nexium
Date: 8/18/2010
What is the half-life of nexiam? Is there a link between the use of Nexiam and ChromograninA?
Rochelle
AskDocWeb: The half-life of Nexium ranges from 1 to 1.5 hours. According to Richard Warner MD, all PPIs will alter CgA results. Dr Warner says that the PPI “should therefore be withheld for about 1 month prior to CgA test. Zantac or Tagamet can be substituted during this period.”
Subj: Heartburn
Date: 8/18/2010
I have been taking nexium for 6 days. The first five I had no heartburn, but today the 6th day the heartburn started back just as strong as before.
Lynn
AskDocWeb: The initial treatment of Nexium is for 4 to 8 weeks because it takes time to work. For some patients who have not healed after 4 weeks, another 4-8 weeks may be prescribed.
Subj: Serious pain in neck and headache
Date: 8/25/2010
I was diagnosed with acid reflux and have been taking nexium for 14 days. I went to doc because of chest pain, sore throat and severe pain in my neck (right under the rt. collar bone where it meets my neck). I still have a serious pain there. I have had chest x-ray, stress test. Should I be taking a heavier dose? And I seem to keep a head ache, could this be from the nexium?
Lee
AskDocWeb: Yes, headache is one of the most commonly reported side effects of Nexium. For an appropriate dosage we suggest you rely on the opinion of your doctor, which is another reason for keeping your doctor informed about how well your treatment is progressing.
