Subj: Yeast infections
Date: 9/27/2010
I have been on various PPI’s and H2 blockers for past 4 months PPI bid with an H2 blocker at bedtime. I have followed the ulcer diet rules with limited success. I stayed on the nexium for 6 weeks before a trial of a more expensive drug- only to return to nexium because of the increased incidence of diarrhea. I have had recurrent yeast infections though and although there is no direct listed side effect of this- yeast infections. I am wondering if the proton pumps are so strongly affected that it is having an effect on my pH?

Subj: Diarrhea and bacterial infection
Date: 9/30/2010
BEWARE!! Longtime USERS of this drug!!! I’ve been taking nexium 40mg a day now for the past 7 or 8 years. Never had any side effects til recently came down with BAD diarreah. All tests were taken and it appears I’ve developed some kind of bacterial infection in my intestines!! I truly believe that this is the cause. The nexium over long term gets rid of your good bacteria and eventually bad bacteria take over your body to destroy it. I’m still sick over a month now and loosing weight. I will never take this DRUG ever again!! Dr. Do you think that the nexium has caused this bacteria. Now that I have it how do I get rid of it!!!???
Jill
AskDocWeb: According to an article in the May 2010 addition of the Archives of Internal Medicine, PPI antacids such as Aciphex, Dexilant, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and yes, Nexium, are linked to increased risk of a bacterial infections as well as broken bones.
Subj: Anemic and have osteoporosis
Date: 10/11/2010
I have been on Nexium for 7 years. Now I am anemic, going for infusions every 8 weeks and have osteoporosis. I am a white 54-year-old woman. I weined myself off of the Nexium, tapering it slowly over 30 days. I am not experiencing any GERD now but am going in for a scope in 3 weeks to check the status. I would not recommend Nexium and am convinced that this has caused my problems. I did not think like others that you could get off of this medication but after considerable thinking it made sense to taper its use and it worked for me.

Subj: Losing weight
Date: 10/25/2010
I am on nexium almost 2 months now for gerd but i have noticed i am losing weight is this a side effect?
Paulettellyttle
AskDocWeb: Weight loss is listed as possibly or probably connected to Nexium and has an incidence rate of less than one percent (2010 PDR).
Subj: Losing weight
Date: 11/7/2010
I have been using nexium 40 mg for 10 + years I had a distal esophagus and upper stomach surgery for early stage cancer. I lost 50 + lbs and have never been able to eat much, always feeling full… Should I furthur consult for emptying issues to try as I am still losing!!
Jim
AskDocWeb: Depending on what you weighed before losing the 50 pounds, that may or may not be desirable. It is certainly not desirable to continue losing weight indefinitely. What is your current BMI?
Subj: Absorption of vitamin B12
Date: 11/11/2010
I’ve been taking nexium and other PPI for over 10 years for Gerd and Barret’s. I often feel tired, stomach spasms and cough. Recently I read an article about PPIs and how they block the absorption of vitamin B12. My question is should patients on PPIs take a B12 supplement?
John
AskDocWeb: Acid blockers or PPIs do reduce absorption of Vitamin B12. This malabsorption (lack of absorption) of vitamin B12 may cause nerve damage (pain, numbness, pins and needles sensation, etc.) in the peripheral nerves, those outside of the brain and spinal cord. This is called peripheral neuropathy. The likelihood of developing clinically significant deficiency over time is unknown. Currently, the affect of PPIs on the absorption of vitamin B12 taken in the form of oral supplements is also not known. This is an area that needs more research.
Subj: Missed a dose of Nexium
Date: 11/12/2010
I’ve been taking nexium for about three weeks now. I missed a dose yesterday and ended up taking it last night when I remembered it which was about 12 hours later. I woke up this morning with some heartburn, and took the next does this morning on time. I still have heartburn. Is this normal or should I consult my doctor. Was the heartburn caused by me missing a dose?
Sabrina
AskDocWeb: Several people have commented that if they miss a dose of Nexium it causes their heartburn to act up. The instructions say to take the missed dose as soon as you remember it however, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medication to make up for the missed dose.
Subj: Stopping Nexium
Date: 11/15/2010
Been having acid problems, first was using Aciphex and worked good, then the doctor switched to Omeprazole and started having muscle pain, then switched to Nexium and muscle pain got worst than ever before, I’m still taking it. Now I realize it may be possible that Nexium is the cause of all my pains, can’t take it anymore. I’ll stop it for a time been to check if it is the cause.
Ricardo
AskDocWeb: Always talk to your doctor before discontinuing any prescription drug. Stopping Nexium suddenly may result is rebound reflux.
Subj: Yellow stool?
Date: 11/17/2010
I started Nexium 18 days ago for LPR, noticed that my stools have change color to yellow, is this normal?
Margo
AskDocWeb: It is not unusual for people with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) to have yellow stools. Reducing the amount of stomach acid can cause food to pass through the digestive tract relatively quickly, which may result in yellow stools. However, there are many possible causes of yellow stool, such as insufficient bile output. Bile salts from the liver give stools their brownish color. When bile output is diminished, it often first appears as a yellow stool. As bile output is decreased, the stool may lose almost all of its color, becoming pale or even grey. A yellow stool can also be a sign of a bacterial infection in the intestines.

Subj: Help with the pain
Date: 11/21/2010
yo I have bad stomach pains and am on nexium is there any thing to help with the pain and a non narcotic?
Nickc
AskDocWeb: The best non-narcotic help may be to change your diet. Following your doctor’s suggested diet can help minimize several of the symptoms of GERD in addition to the stomach pain.
Subj: Increasing dosage?
Date: 11/22/2010
I have been taking Nexium 20mg for about 7 months now, I’m running low and I’m in afghanistan doing contract work. I was wondering if I could start taking 40mg if that would have a serious effect on my body?
Sam
AskDocWeb: Increasing your dosage should be done only on the advice of your doctor. In most cases it will not result in faster healing time and may result in serious digestive problems. Remember that the patient information for Nexium says that regular over-the-counter antacids may be used while taking Nexium.
Subj: Bad reaction to Nexium
Date: 11/23/2010
My 11 year old daughter went on Nexium 40 mg and yes the first week it helped her reflux but after that we were in trouble. Stabbing knife pains in abdomen, bloating, back pain, headaches, and the worse being insomnia. The poor little girl was so tired in the mornings it was interfering with school. We have stopped it completely. I’m a nurse and have never seen this before but I also know that with meds and differ people anything is possible no matter what the dr’s think!

- Psychiatric drugs
- Medicine taken to lower fever (antipyretics) such as aspirin and acetaminophen
- Many other drugs including cortisone, prednisone, and prednisolone, have also been associated with night sweats.

Night sweats are typically harmless however, they may also be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Those with unexplained night sweats should seek medical care to determine the cause. Read more feedback about Nexium.
