Nexium Side Effects

Subj: I stopped Nexium

Side effects after taking Nexium include; Dizziness, headaches, continuous cough, constant sinus drainage, red flushed face, vomiting, irregular stole; from constipation with the consistancy of a thick paste to diarrhea, gruggling stomach, etc. But, cured my symptoms it was prescribed; acid reflux, ulcers and slight hernia. I will not take any more of these pills for long term cures. Once I stopped the Nexium all adverse symptoms slooowly went away.

Subj: Dry burning nose?

Has anyone had a side effect when on Nexium of dry burning nose? I also take Efient and wonder which one is the culprit? Thanks.

Subj: I want to taper off the Nexium

Went to see primary doctor, because I had (just) heartburn for three days. I used over the counter heartburn meds to no avail. I was prescribed prevacid had breakthrough heartburn and it made me feel ill. Then I was prescribed Nexium which I have been on for a little over two weeks, most days are good, but sometimes I feel a bit of burning on the right side of my chest (by my breastbone) and upper epigastric pain. I have broken out with a small rash on my face. I have scheduled an appointment with a gastroenterologist. I want to taper off the Nexium, but I have read in previous post that the heartburn can come back. Ive only been on Nexium for a little over 2 weeks, will I have the same problem? I am not on any other med, and other than heartburn in good health.

AskDocWeb: That depends on too many factors to guess. They may have to put a scope in there in order to evaluate whether or not it might come back.

Subj: Irritable and my hands shake

I have been taking Nexium for about 3 years now and have recently stopped taking it because I ran out of my prescription a few days ago. Since I have stopped taking it I have been extremely irritable and my hands shake. I read that Nexium doesn’t have withdrawal symptomns but this is the only medication I have stopped taking.

I took Nexium for over ten years. Last summer, I suffered from a heart problem called Torsades de point. Basically my heart stopped. Turns out I had no magnesium and extremely low potassium. the doctors think Nexium may have blocked my bodies ability to absorb minerals. I have heard recently that the FDA is having the maker of Nexium put warning labels on the bottles saying it can cause low magnesium. I had wonderful success controlling GERD with this drug. Of coarse, I no longer take this medication. Still get some nasty heartburn now and then but honestly, I am lucky to still be here so I use tums and watch my diet much closer.

I don’t know how common this problem is or how long you have to take Nexium before this issue can develop. I should say that this heart condition and low magnesium are very rare. So rare that they don’t really test for low magnesium. So if you are having muscle cramps, severe dizziness or other odd symptoms, I suggest you ask your doctor to test your magnesium and potassium blood levels. I wish someone had told me this. I hope this information helps someone. Good product just bad for some of us.

I have been on nexium for 3 or 4 years and have experienced all sorts of pain until my insurance wouldn’t pay anymore and then I realized, as I have been off nexium for 6 months now, that things are starting to normalize. I believe it caused my ED condition.

Subj: Hiatal hernia

I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia a little over 2 weeks ago, after suffering from panic attacks, stomach pain and pressure, and problems breathing for about 2 months. I lost about 25 pounds at this time, but I was also taking in less then 1000 calories a day. My doctor said I was having GERD caused by the hiatal hernia, but I really haven’t had problems with heart burn, more stomach pains and breathing problems. I am mildly asthmatic. I started nexium 40mg twice a day and have now tapered to once a day 30 min before breakfast. Stomach problems come and go, but I am eating regularly again, but the breathing problems never went away. Any idea what may be the case? I hate taking medicine, and because I started eating regularly again, I went down to 1x a day. Again, any recommendations would be great. Thanks so much!

Subj: No libido

I’ve read all through your pages and have not found an answer. My boyfriend has been taking Nexium, and ever since he has absolutley no libido. The only thing that we can connect it to is Nexium, it appears to have happened as soon as he started taking it. Is this a side effect?

AskDocWeb: Nexium has no effect on libido or any sexual side effects. What few side effects it does have are primarily in the gastrointestinal system.

Subj: Irregular heart rates

I have been on Nexium since about 1993. I have developed a condition that I am unable to eat anything spicy or oily or butter. Once it makes it to my colon I feel bad and have irregular heart rates. As soon as what ever I have eaten passes I feel better. Could this be due to being on Nexium for so long? I have had my gallbladder out – so it’s not that. I had colon cancer in 1999 and recovered fine. They have been back in 5 times to check and have never found anything.

Subj: How long does it take for side effects to go away?

How long does it take nexium to stop working and any side effects to go away. Took two doses one on Tuesday after getting it from doctor who said ok to put in immediately even though I had 200 mg OTC Cimetidine in, and then another dose next morning without Cimetidine. That first day no problem had a little lightheadness after h2 blocker war off next day nuasea worsened as day went on also backache and some lightheadedness. Today did not take ant at all will it take a while for effects to wear off?

AskDocWeb: Most side effect are gone within 4 days but there are a small number of reports of side effects persisting from 4 to 6 weeks.

Subj: Chemical/smoky odor in my nose

I have been on Nexium 40mg for 5 years. It was prescriped after I developed Thyroid Cancer and one vocal cord damaged. It was when I went to a ENT for the vocal cord repair that they put me on Nexium due to reflux, hyatal hernia, vocal cord spamas. In the last few months I started having a chemical/smokey odor in my nose. The odor was occassionly and lasted only a few mintues. However in the last 3 weeks it is coming more often and lasting longer. I would like to know if the Nexium has caused this in anyone eles. I am pretty sure that it is the Nexium because I have tryed taking it every other day and the odor was better then I tried 3 days without it and the odor went away but the orginal reasons for taking it are back because I had to continue the nexium. Can anyone help?

AskDocWeb: Nexium is not listed as one of the drugs that change smell. However, acid reflux can vent gases from the stomach into the esophagus, which may result in some strange smells. If you are smelling it intermittently, more prominently after meals, or when sitting, it may be acid reflux. Here are some of the other possible causes for smelling a smoky odor:

  • There may actually be smoke present
    • Something may be on fire
    • Laptop or other electronic gear may be overheating
    • Air Conditioner may be leaking freon
  • Spices or seasoning (Everglades Seasoning)
  • Sinus infection
    • Candida or
    • Some other kind of fungal infection
  • olfactory hallucinations
    • Schizophrenia
    • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • brain damage (rare)
  • damage to your smell receptors

Some of the above causes require medical attention so you may want to check with an ENT specialist (ear, nose, and throat).

Subj: Stopping the medicine

been on Nexium for 4-5 months now and have noticed joint pain and parethesia on the left side. Decided that I will stop taking the medicine and see what happens. It’s only day 1 without it. Hopefully stopping the medicine will make me feel normal again.

AskDocWeb: How successful you will be depends partly on whether your GERD is complicated or not. GERD with strictures shorten the esophagus and increase the likelihood of reflux. Hopefully you are aware of the possibility of rebound hyper-secretion or rebound reflux. There have been reports of rebound reflux or acid rebound when a PPI is stopped suddenly. Those reports indicate that the rebound symptoms last anywhere between 4 or 5 days up to three months.

In the July issue of Gastroenterology (2010), one study concluded that proton-pump inhibitors may cause or aggravate the very acid-reflux symptoms they’re used to treat. The reason for this rebound reflux is acid hypersecretion, which results from the body’s increased acid production when Nexium is stopped. This rebound reflux may worsen the symptoms of gas and heartburn. It is typical for mild to moderately severe reflux symptoms to show up within a few days after discontinuing of a PPI.

There are encouraging reports from those tapering off PPIs where they first take them every other day, and then gradually add more off days. This is aided by the use of over-the-counter antacids such as Tums, which can quickly reduce heartburn symptoms by changing the pH balance in the stomach. Of course you should discuss stopping the PPI with your doctor before trying anything like that. If you have complicated GERD, e.g. GERD with stricture, chronic daily PPI therapy may be mandatory for optimal control of acid reflux. Read more feedback about Nexium.
