Intense gas pressure
Date: 4/2/2013
I was taking nexium for a few years. My GI decided it was time to stop, so I stepped down from 40 to 20 then to Famotidine. I am now experiencing severe gas. I will experience repeated bouts of gas pressure. On the toilet I will release gas and some small fragments of stool. Some time regular movements but always preceded by a intense gas pressure. Is this a side effect? does it go away? Also, I notice a yeasty smell that wasn’t present before getting off nexium. (I say yeast since the smell is reminiscent of horse manure).

AskDocWeb: Famotidine (Pepcid) is actually supposed to help eliminate gas and hyperacidity. Gas problems are a constant battle for many people. Most often the symptoms are related to diet. We firmly believe that if more people consulted with a dietitian there would be a lot less complaints about gas. Have you read the page about Bloating?

Can nexium cause blisters?
Date: 4/6/2013
can nexium cause a blister on my nose?

Sug

AskDocWeb: Blistering or peeling of the skin is not very common but it is a possible side effect of Nexium and should be reported to a medical professional immediately.

Cluster headaches
Date: 4/10/2006
Well, the Nexium is working perfectly for my GERD. Restarted daily coral calcium for fear of bone density issues. However, have experienced severe cluster headaches. Now considering stopping the coral calcium because of associated issues of low magnesium which is symptomatic with Nexium.

Photosensitivity
Date: 4/18/2006
I am taking Nexuim. I know with some drugs you can’t be in the sun for long time. What about nexium?

Mojgan

AskDocWeb: There are a number of drugs that cause photosensitivity but Nexium is not one of them.

Nexium HP7
Date: 5/12/2006
Us it safe to take a 14 day course of Nexium HP7 for Helicobactor Pyloris? First 7 day course sometime ago didn’t work. Is a 14 day program ok not experiencing too many side effects at the moment. Thank you.

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: A small percentage of people with acid reflux do not respond to proton pump inhibitors. It is also possible that the antibiotics may not always kill Helicobacter pylori. Since there is no evidence that Nexium Hp7 is addictive, your doctor may prescribe this medicine for another use.

Bloated stomach and back pain
Date: 5/25/2006
Have taken 40mg every morning for just under 2 weeks for an ulcer. Have developed a bloated stomach, with some pain – also a very sore back. I know its from this drug so I have stopped taking it today and will stick to the ranitadine pills my Dr gave me. How long will it take the side effects of nexium to go away?

Rose

AskDocWeb: To be safe, please talk to your doctor before discontinuing Nexium. Since this drug has such a short half-life (1 to 1.5 hours) it is completely out of your system in less than 24 hours.

Lost sex drive
Date: 6/12/2006
iv lost sexual drive and its been for days since i finished my course of nexium hp7 will my sex drive returne on its own or not if it will how long?

Sexual drive loss

AskDocWeb: Tell your doctor about any side effects that bother you or that do not go away. Drug induced sexual dysfunction usually goes away after the drug is discontinued. How long that takes varies widely from one individual to the next. It is rare for the libido not to return but if it doesn’t, consult with your doctor.

LPR reflux
Date: 6/20/2006
I was diagnosed with LPR reflux. I have been on Nexium for 3 days. How long before the mucus stops coming up in my throat and down the back of my throat? I am also on Allegra for post nasal drip. Thanks any information is appreciated.

Paula

AskDocWeb: LPR reflux (Laryngopharyngeal reflux) is similar to GERD but the symptoms are different than those that are typical of gastroesophageal reflux disease. With LPR reflux, you may not have the classic GERD symptoms such as a burning sensation in your lower chest (heartburn). That’s why it is sometimes called silent reflux.

There is a ring of muscle (sphincter) at both ends of your esophagus. Normally when you eat, these sphincters keep the food moving one way — to your stomach. But with LPR reflux, the sphincters don’t work right and stomach acid backs up into your throat, voice box, or even into the back of your nasal airway. This can cause inflammation in areas that are not protected against digestive acids which can result in the production of mucus.

The treatment for LPR reflux in adults may include lifestyle modifications such as:

  • Avoiding alcohol.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes around the waist.
  • Chewing gum to increase saliva and neutralize acid.
  • Elevate the head of the bed 4 to 6 inches.
  • Lose weight (if needed).
  • Quit smoking (if you smoker).
  • Restrict chocolate, mints, fats, citrus fruits, carbonated beverages, spicy or tomato-based products, red wine, and caffeine.
  • Stop eating at least three hours before going to bed.

Although some people respond well to self-care and medical management others need more aggressive and lengthy treatment. If your treatment is not effective or if symptoms recur, your doctor may suggest surgery (Fundoplication).

Bubble/pressure in throat/esophagus
Date: 7/8/2013
I was prescribed nexium for my GERD, and feeling of a bubble/pressure in my throat/esophagus that never seems to get relief, until I eat, and comes back. However, I’ve been taking it for a week now and can often feel a burning sensation in my chest, which sometimes goes to my right arm. It’s not heart-related, and feels more like someone rubbed Bengay EXTRA, EXTRA strength all over my chest/arm… Just wondering what’s with that? Also, wondering how long does it take for the bubble/burping sensation to get relieved.

Mac
AskDocWeb: Hopefully you have discussed the burning sensation with your doctor. If not, please do that. Unfortunately the time it takes to get relief varies widely from a few days to several weeks and is not guaranteed.
