Subj: Nioxin on the banned list?
Date: 10/24/2009
Please advise whether any ingredient in the Nioxin hair loss products are on the banned list for elite sports people.

Peter

AskDocWeb: The banned list for sports people deals with the use and misuse of performance-enhancing substances. We have not seen any performance-enhancing ingredients in Nioxin.

My wife started using Nioxin scalp therapy after recent heavy hair fall. Surprisingly new hair generation started without any side affects.

Subj: Thinning getting worse
Date: 1/26/2010
I am 34 and started noticing some thinning of the hair about six months ago. I then started to use Nioxin shampoo and scalp therapy. I use it continually except when on holidays which usually last about 2 weeks at a time. About a month ago, I have noticed the thinning getting worse and hair loss increasing. I have also started to experience itchy scalp and dandruff. I have seen a dermatologist who has suggested discontinuing the use of Nioxin and trying Regaine for women 2%. I am about to start using Regaine but after reading some of the comments on this site, am unsure if I should just wait to see the effects of stopping the use of Nioxin. I have also started taking multivitamins about 3 months ago.

I have had the Nioxin scalp treatment at my hair dresser and I use the #3 shampoo and Conditionor and #2 shot treatment..but my question is..I have read the responses on causing cancer..but my question is..can it also cause your blood pressure to go up..I have never had high blood pressure but..I have noticed that since I have been using the Nioxin products that whenever I would go to the Dr..by BP would be up…I have never had high BP in my life until recently and I had and LPN at work tell me that that she had been told that the Nioxin products will cause this..so is this true…and if I discontinue using the product will my hair began to fall out again? AskDocWeb: The Nioxin products do not list changes in blood pressure as a known side effect.

I have used Nioxin for at least seven months. My hair has filled in where thin and is thicker. I love it but now I am concerned that some ingredients may cause cancer. I am a Leukemia survior!!!! My concern is great, cannot get a clear answer. Think I will see if Mayo Clinic has anything to say.

Ellen

AskDocWeb: The makers of Nioxin could clear this up if they would come out with a statement that says that they remove the contaminant 1,4-dioxane from their product. So far they are very quiet on this subject.

Subj: High blood pressure?
Date: 3/4/2010
Can anyone tell me if Nioxin has been linked to high blood pressure…I have been using Nioxin for over a year and I have never had high blood pressure until about 10 months ago..my BP has always run 17/122 over 76/80….4 months after having the scalp treatments and using the shampoo/conditioner/and leave in shot my BP was 132/84…I went to the dr backin Feb and my BP was 154/96…which is very high..so I never had this until I started using this product…I have stopped using it for now but I would like some kind of feed back on this…please.

Nita
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer does not list high blood pressure as one of the possible side effects of Nioxin.

Subj: Itchy scalp
Date: 3/8/2010
I have been using Nioxin off and on for over ten years. I have not experience any problems. However, with my last use I did notice an itachy scalp. I didn’t associate it with Nioxin until now, when I read some of the feedbacks. It would be nice to know for sure or not if this product causes illnesses. Too expensive just to toss out without knowing. I’ll just hold on to my supply (but won’t use) until I find more info.

Subj: Migraine headaches

I’ve been using the Nioxin 1 treatment for about almost 5 months now. About 10 weeks ago, I started getting migraine headaches. I wondered if any of your other readers have experienced this.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 4/23/2010
Does Nioxon affect weight loss? I’ve noticed since I started the vitamin my weight has increased with no change of diet or exercise.

Jamal

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of gaining weight while using Nioxin.

Subj: Headaches and nausea

I have currently been using nioxin for 2 days and have not had side effects like everyone else. I have had really bad headaches and nausea the morning after. Also have experienced a fast heart beat and shortness of breath. As of today I am discontinuing the product and will be trying to get an appointment with my doctor. Please let me know if you have any advise.

Subj: Hair loss at 23 years old
Date: 7/18/2010
Hello AskDocWeb, I have a terrible hair loss and my hair is thinning and people can see my scalp through my hair and I am worried as I am just 23 years old. I have gone through the products Rogaine and Nioxin. Both seem to have side effects. What do you recommend? Please advise. Thanks!

Fahad

AskDocWeb: Rather than trying one product after another, we suggest you consult with a dermatologist to find out why you are losing hair. That way you can get a treatment designed specifically for your condition.

Subj: Nioxin concern
Date: 8/7/2010
I’ve used Nioxin 3 for almost 2 years and recently switched to Niioxin 4 – I’m in my early 60’s and like the product and feel that it works and have had no other side effects. I recently had a full physical and my blood pressure, etc. is good, but may stop using Nioxin if there is a cancer risk and will do more research online. It would be helpful if the Nioxin makers put out a statement about this issue and consider removing what looks like one ingredient that is of concern.

Subj: Tingling sensation
Date: 8/17/2010
I have been using this product for about two months now, and i recently had a sinus surgery. I have had a tingling sensation all over my scalp since my surgery, and am not sure if this has anything to do with the surgery, or a side effect of the Nioxin Scalp Treatment? Any suggestions?

Joe
AskDocWeb: Although the tingling may be a little unnerving, especially when it continues after the shampooing is finished, that is one of the common side effects of Nioxin.

Subj: Safe for pregnancy?
Date: 8/28/2010
If you are planning on becoming pregnant and/or are pregnant is Nioxin safe to use? I’ve been using this product for the past 1.5 years. What shampoo/conditioner is SAFE to use in pregnancy? Thanks in advance,

Jenny
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, “There are no known side effects that prevent expectant mothers from using NIOXIN®…” But then they also note: “Always consult with your doctor before using any product during pregnancy, when breastfeeding or undergoing any other medical treatments.”

Subj: Possible cancer causing ingredient?
Date: 9/6/2010
Have been using Nioxin for about 3 weeks. Hair appears to be thicker but hair growth seems to have stopped. Have some irritation of the scalp. I am also concerned, now, about the possible cancer causing ingredient. If Nioxin will not come out and say if they eliminate the carcinogin, then I suspect that they do not.

Subj: Other stuff
Date: 9/12/2010
Does anyone know anything about hair loss after discontinuing. Mine is falling out, almost to half. I want to know if and when this will stop soon. I just had a hysterectomy and wondered if that has anything to do with it. Help I’m concerned I will have to ask my friends to make a wig. I have started using the shampoo and conditioner again but can’t afford the other. Will the other stuff make that much difference?

D’nise
AskDocWeb: Nioxin seems to have many products. What other “stuff” are you referring to?

Subj: Nixon pills?
Date: 9/24/2010
I have been using Nixon pills for a year and it’s done wonders for my hair I just bought a bottle for my mom I wanted to make sure it’s safe to use I ce across this i’m shocked it could cause cancer and sad I have to stop using it right when my hairs starting to look great.

Sara
AskDocWeb: This discussion is not about pills. The concern about cancer has to do with the possibility that their topical solutions to treat hair loss may contain 1,4-dioxane, often called dioxane. They neither confirm nor deny this. 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of the process (ethoxylation) used to convert sodium laurel sulfate into sodium laureth sulfate. Since the FDA considers 1,4-dioxane a contaminate rather than an ingredient, it is not require to be listed on the label. 1,4-dioxane is classified by the IARC as a Group 2B carcinogen: possibly carcinogenic to humans because it is a known carcinogen in animals. While the FDA encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane, it is not required by federal law. A number of health authorities around the world have banned imports of products containing 1,4-dioxane.

Subj: Redness of forehead and face
Date: 11/13/2010
I am using Nioxin scalp therapy and have developed redness of the forehead and face. Do you have any previous reports of this?

Linda

AskDocWeb: Not specifically of just redness but there are reports of inflammation as in the previous post.

Subj: Erection problems
Date: 1/3/2011
I have been using Nioxin full treatment for almost 7 months. I am experiencing some erection problems. I have never had something like this. Could be this related with blocks DHT? Thanks!

Carlos

AskDocWeb: That seems to be an unknown as erection problems have not been reported with Nioxin products. It would be helpful if you would report back when the problem resolves to let everyone know how long that took and whether you continued using Nioxin or discontinued use.
