Subj: Chest pain on the left side
Date: 2/19/2008
I’ve recently started taking ortho and ever since I’ve had some chest pain on the left side. I’m 27 and recently had a baby. Is this a normal side effect or should I be concerned?

Amber

AskDocWeb: It is doubtful that this is caused by your birth control but it could be costo-conchondritis so consult with your doctor.

Subj: Take a month off
Date: 2/20/2008
I had been on Ortho Tri-Cycin for over a year and recently decided to get off the pill because I was experiencing severe depression during my exam time, I found myself very unmotivated which is an extreme indicator to me because I have always been self motivated. I was just wondering, I chose to take a month off from taking any pill and my period is a few days late, I am sexually active but use condoms every time. Is this a possible side effect?

Cecilia

AskDocWeb: Discontinuing the pill can result in your period being late or early. If you take a month off from taking your birth control pills it will take another three months for your body to get used to them again. That could add up to more trouble than it is worth. Please talk to your doctor before doing anything like that.

Subj: Block androgens?
Date: 2/20/2008
I was on ortho tricyclen for birth control and hormonal acne. It definitely helped for both. Three months ago I decided to go off the pill because I wanted to try and better my health without the pill. I ended getting horrible acne as a result. My face is a wreck now. I’m not back on the pill. Wonder if the pill will be able to help with my acne a second or will it make it worse. Mostly it should help right because it would block androgens?

Kayti

AskDocWeb: Yes, that is correct.

Subj: Stopped taking the pill
Date: 2/22/2008
My husband and I have decided to start a family, but I have been on the “pill” for about 8 years (at least), and we have been using condoms since I have stopped the pill. However, I haven’t gotten my period this month, and I am not sure what to do. I know I am not pregnant, but I wonder if there is something else that could be wrong. This would have been my first cycle since stopping without the pill.

Sarah

AskDocWeb: Most likely your body is just becoming adjusted to being off of the pill. If you don’t get it the second month, then do a home pregnancy test or see your physician.

Subj: Conceived on Yasmin
Date: 2/23/2008
I conceived my son on Yasmin, so after he was born the Dr put me on Ortho Lo, I had been taking it for about 2 years. I had not been able to loose weight and I run 2-3 miles a day and walk at least 3 miles with my husband and son and I do at least one work out video a day. I stopped the pill 6 months ago, had unprotected sex a month after I stopped and I have not had a period in 2 1/2 months. I my hands and feet have been a little swollen but all of the over the counter birth control tests have come back negative, Could I still be pregnant or is this normal?

Allison

AskDocWeb: You do have a concern here because you should have had a period and you haven’t. Your doctor will tell you what you need to do, which may include being put on a birth control pill to start your mensis.

Subj: TriNessa
Date: 2/23/2008
I was prescribed ortho tri cyclen but Walgreens gave me TriNessa. Is this a bad contraceptive?

Abby

AskDocWeb: No, it is not a bad contraceptive. Tri-Nessa is one of the generics for Ortho Tri-cyclen®.

Subj: Had unprotected sex
Date: 2/24/2008
This is my first month of Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Today I am suppose to start the green pill at one, I’ve taken all the other pills as directed and everything’s been fine. My doctor also gave me some vitamins to take too, I take those before I take my BC. This is my first time ever taking BC. I am sexually active, and had unprotected sex two days before I am suppose to take my green pill. Should I be worried?

KT

AskDocWeb: There is no cause for concern. You are beyond the period of time where you needed to use a back-up form of birth control.

Subj: Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo hard on my system
Date: 2/25/2008
I just finished the active pills in my first pack of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Prior to that, I was on a couple of different BC pills for the past four years. This last month, I have been miserable, particularly over the last week and a half. I’ve had nausea, lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, breast tenderness, etc. A home pregnancy test was negative this morning, by the way. I never had any problems with my prior pills. Why is this one so much harder on my system? Will I likely adjust in time or should I switch back?

Julie

AskDocWeb: You will have to go through a second month to find out if you will adjust or not. If things get too miserable, remember that you don’t have to wait to request a change in pills.

Subj: Cut out my period
Date: 2/26/2008
On sprintec 28 day – continuous to cut out my period, so I take only the pills with the hormones, it was working for about 2 months, now about 5 months in, I’ve got spotting, brown everyday – its annoying as can be – not a real period just something light everyday – has any one else had this? How long before it goes away? Is just because I’m using the generic?

Nmr

AskDocWeb: Using a generic has nothing to do with this. More likely it is because you are not taking the sugar pills and that alters your body’s natural schedule. You may be able to get away with that for awhile but it sounds like your body is starting to rebel against it. Either start taking them as directed or talk to your physician about alternatives.

Subj: Delay in getting period after going off the pill
Date: 2/26/2008
I’ve been on Ortho tri-cyclen for years. I just went off of it recently – and I was wondering if people ever experience a delay in getting their period after going off the pill.

Natalie

AskDocWeb: Yes that does happen. It can take months for your body to return to normal after discontinuing birth control pills so give your body time to recover.

Subj: Increase appetite?
Date: 2/27/2008
Does Tri-Cyclen lo increase your appetite? I have noticed about 5 lb weight gain since being on this bcp. Is that normal? I have been on other bcp’s and have not experienced this side effect.

Vanessa

AskDocWeb: Yes, changes in appetite is listed as a side effect under adverse reactions so you may want to discuss this with your doctor.

Subj: No problem
Date: 2/27/2008
Well I have been on Ortho tri cyclen, TriNessa (the generic of it) and Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo…and well I pity these people who have all these problems with it. I have never gained weight, had mood swings, depression and my acne has only improved with being on it. It seems I am the odd ball in comparison to these other people, but personally I haven’t had a single problem with any of the pills.

Terri

Subj: Difference between ortho cycline and ortho evra
Date: 2/27/2008
What is the difference between ortho cycline and ortho evra?

Lisa

AskDocWeb: Ortho Cyclen is a pill containing norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol. Ortho Evra is a transdermal patch containing Norelgestromin and Ethinyl Estradiol. They have different progestational compounds.

Subj: Good experiences with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo
Date: 2/27/2008
I have generally good experiences with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, meaning no severe mood swings as when I was on the patch, and no migraines as when I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen regular. My question is, is there a generic version of the Lo form? I graduated college and am now on a very basic insurance plan until I get benefits from work and my insurance doesn’t cover prescriptions.

Amy

AskDocWeb: Sorry Amy, there is no generic version out yet.

Subj: Black out and get hot flashes
Date: 2/28/2008
I started ortho-lo 12 days ago. I was started in the middle of my cycle. My hormones are out of whack and when my period starts I black out and get hot flashes so I was started mid-cycle in hopes of preventing this problem. The first week was fine, I was moody and my back and my breasts hurt but no period. Then when I started my second week that’s when all went to hell. I started having this brown sticky discharge, got super bloated, and eventually started having a full blown period. I am having the worst cramps of my life. Even when my periods were screwed up, I have never had cramps this bad and I am even passing clots which is not normal for me. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, will it ever stop!!!

Sarah

AskDocWeb: Blackouts are a major concern, please see your physician.

Subj: Sex without risk of becoming pregnant
Date: 2/29/2008
I am starting ortho tri-cyclen lo tomorrow (Saturday). When is the first day that I would be able to have unprotected sex without the risk of becoming pregnant? Next Friday would be the 7th pill I take, does that day count, or am I not protected until Saturday (I understand that there is still the 1% chance always). Thanks,

Lisa

AskDocWeb: To wait the full seven days you would have to wait until the following Saturday.

Subj: Increase in acne
Date: 3/2/2008
I started taking the Trinessa almost a month ago. I have a large increase in acne on my forehead, severe lower back pain, and a yellowish discharge. I also have problems with lubrication during sex. Is all of this normal?

Acneisadrag

AskDocWeb: No, it is not normal and don’t put up with it, consult with your physician.

Subj: A BCP to cure acne?
Date: 3/4/2008
I have been on ortho tricyclen lo for nearly 1 month, should I change to the regular ortho tricyclen pill (not lo) since it is approved by FDA as a BCP to cure acne skin. Let me know thanks!

Zhi

AskDocWeb: That is something you need to discuss with your physician.

Subj: Concerned about pregnancy
Date: 3/4/2008
I have been on Tri-Cyclen Lo for a little less than a year. I missed a couple of pills a month ago, but I’ve taken them regularly ever since. My last period was in January. I did not have one in February, and it’s now March and still no period. My nipples are tender and the period I had in January was shorter and less severe than any I’ve had in my life. I have been very cautious and have used condoms every single time and my partner has not once climaxed inside of me. I took a pregnancy test two weekends ago and it was negative. Should I still be concerned about a pregnancy?

Lisa

AskDocWeb: You should probably do another test.

Subj: Am I okay?
Date: 3/4/2008
I have been on ortho tri cyclen lo for about 7 months and are very regular with my periods, but I had unprotected sex and my boyfriend ejaculated inside of me. I took my pill on time the day we had sex but the next day I was 5 1/2 hours late on taking it, it was my 3rd day of the white active pills. If I continue to take my pills at the same time everyday from now till I’m supposed to get my period am I ok?

Tina

AskDocWeb: Yes, you are okay. Read more feedback
