Subj: I was surprised.
Date: 6/2/2008
I have been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo since the ’04 birth of my daughter. I had unprotected sex Mar 7, got my period Mar 12, and then finally stopped taking my pills Mar 18 cause I wanted to have another baby. Well, my period came on AGAIN Mar 25. Had unprotected sex on that day b4 it came on again and then after that period was over….well, I’m pregnant now. My ovulation calendar says my conception was April 8. Is it possible to get pregnant that fast? I was surprised.

Malerie

AskDocWeb: Yes it is possible, congratulations.

Subj: Unbelievably moody, tired, and upset
Date: 6/2/2008
I’ve been on tri-cyclen lo for about 3 years. And my boyfriend used to tell me that right before my period I was almost unbearable to be around and I used to get extremely upset, I thought this was just part of the menstrual cycle however, I went off of the pill for about 2 months and am now getting back into it and am finding myself unbelievably moody, tired, and upset, could I have the pill to blame for my ill temper this entire time?

Lauren

AskDocWeb: Well yes you could, but you could also consult with your physician about changing your birth control pill.

Subj: Irritation, and soreness around vagina
Date: 6/2/2008
I have the same problem as one of the women above. I have had every STD test, and tests for yeast/ bladder infections. I have irritation, and soarness around my vagina. They can’t figure out what it is and I’m starting to wondering if it could be a side effect from ortho low. I think it started about a month after I started taking the pill, at first mild and its been getting worse.

Mandel

AskDocWeb: Yes, there is an increased risk of vaginal infection (candidiasis) with the use of ortho low.

Subj: Could I get pregnant?
Date: 6/2/2008
I was depo shot. I only took one shot and bleeding every 3 month for 2 weeks! My doctor gave me ortho tri cycle -lo last month. I bleed for 10 days. Now I switched to ortho tri cyclen and I didn’t protect my self the first two days, could I get pregnant? I am a mother of a 1 yr old and a 4 yr old. Why so much bleeding? It’s very heavy too and bright red. Thank you,

Natalie

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible that you could be pregnant but with your irregular mensis it’s doubtful. Bleeding does vary and if it is a concern you should check with your doctor.

Subj: I am considering stopping
Date: 6/3/2008
Hi, I’ve been on ortho tri cyclin and lite for nearly 20 years with no side effects. I am 51 years old and low risk, non smoker. I am considering stopping and want to know if this will throw me into menapause which I have not yet experienced. Also, should I be concerned over weight gain or acne?

Mary

AskDocWeb: At the age of 51 it’s normal to start menopause. You shouldn’t gain weight from stopping the pill. You are more likely to lose ten or more pounds.

Subj: Birth control pills to clear up Acne
Date: 6/4/2008
Hi. I was on Yazz and now I am switching to Ortho Tri – Cyclen Lo. I’m mostly taking birth control pills to clear up my acne. I was wondering if this will help clear up my acne?

April

AskDocWeb: According to the 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo doesn’t help with acne problems. The original Ortho Tri-cyclen® does help with acne.

Subj: Hives
Date: 6/5/2008
I have been taking OTC Lo for a little over 2 months and until just recently everything has been OK. Out of the clear blue sky I am now breaking out in hives. How likely is it that the pill causing them? Has anyone else had an incident like mine? I have been on a bunch of different sites looking for someone that had this kind of side effect and have not encountered one case. Help!

Eve

AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of this happening with OTC Lo, better consult with your physician.

Subj: Stopped taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo
Date: 6/5/2008
At first I was doing well with the Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo until I lost my drug coverage. I have not taken the pill for about two weeks. I have had unprotected sex. Should I start taking the pills now or should I wait to see if my cycle come. I was taking the pills for over 1 year. And also how long do the pill stay in your system. I think It will be too early to know if I’m pregnant, but I took a test and it was (-).

Tanya

AskDocWeb: The directions say to wait until your mensis comes and then start the Sunday after. You may want to do another home pregnancy test now just to make sure, but your mensis will probably come early due to the stopping of the birth control pill.

Subj: I missed a pill or two
Date: 6/6/2008
I’ve been on Ortho Tri-cyclen for 9 months now, and I missed a pill or two last month and now this month my periods are messed up. I bleed alot the second week of my pills and a lil the third and now I was suppose to start on sun but never did now I’m 5days late. I was wondering if there was a chance I could be pregnant???

Jenn

AskDocWeb: It may not seem like it but there is a big difference between missing one pill and missing two pills. If you miss taking one pill you can make it up the next day by taking two pills and that will not affect the level of protection provided by the pill. If you miss taking two pills in a row then you could become pregnant and should use a backup form of birth control for the following seven days. Please consult with your doctor or at least read the directions as to what to do when missing more than one pill. You may want to do a home pregnancy test to make sure that you are not pregnant. And because there was a break in the pills, your period may be off for awhile. If this continues please consult with your health care provider.

Subj: Wondering and being anxious
Date: 6/6/2008
Wondering and being anxious if this is the appropriate BC pill for me. I already experience anxiety, depression; I’m already overweight. I was on Yasmin, and gained weight on that, and then, Low-egestrel, and gained quite a bit of weight, along with having migraine headaches on that. Now, my ob/gyn nurse is thinking of putting me on Ortho-Cyclen Lo. I’m really worried if this pill will work for me…or just make my current problems worse? I already have low back pain from a lumbar spinal fusion, I already have skin issues. I’m probably going to get the ortho pills tomorrow. I’m really nervous, worried, concerned, and scared. I don’t need a larger cup size, nor do I want to become a crying freak again. I know this is necessary, but I feel as if I’m going to play “human guniea pig.” If I gain more weight on the Ortho-Lo, what is the best strategy to get it off…if my appetite cravings are going to “hog wild”?

Susannah

AskDocWeb: The best strategy would be one tailored to your condition and metabolism. There is no guarantee that any pill will or won’t cause you to have the same symptoms.

Subj: WHAT GIVES?
Date: 6/8/2008
My periods have lasted much longer. The last period I had lasted an entire pack. It’s only been about 6 days, and I’ve started my period again! Isn’t birth control supposed to shorten and supress them a BIT? WHAT GIVES?!

Marilyn

AskDocWeb: You are right, that should not be happening. Please consult with your physician. Your birth control pill may need to be changed to another type.

Subj: Irregular period?
Date: 6/8/2008
I have been on Tricyclen lo for 19 months now. MY first period last for 2 weeks and little spotting for about a week. I wasn’t really scared at all because my dr. warned me about all that when I first started the pill. I have been having an irregular menstruation for the last 3 months. Its like I bleed every two weeks. And sometimes it’s really dark, brownie and clumpy type. My first month of irregular bleeding was in February. I didn’t me bother at that time because I thought it was just from stress. I just started going back to school and I was still adjusting specially with my compressed and accelerated program. I didn’t expect it would still happen the following month, then following month. And I still haven’t gone to the dr. yet because of my hectic schedule. I know I missed one of my first week pill one time, because I forget to pick my prescription and that was it. I take my pill on regular day and same time of the day. Should I be worried about being pregnant? Is irregular bleeding normal with Tricyclen -lo? I feel great, I’m not sick or anything. I don’t have any pain or headaches. I’m just kind a sick of it. And I don’t think bleeding twice a month is healthy and normal. I hope you can give some information about this. I am just so confused right now.

Mitchie

AskDocWeb: Missing pills may cause an irregular mensis but this sounds more than just a little irregular. Please check with your doctor.

Subj: Haven’t started yet
Date: 6/8/2008
Hi, this is my first month being on orto tricyclen and I took my first sugar pill today and I know that your suppose to get your period then and I haven’t yet. I’ve had protected sex without a problem (such as a broken condom) 5 times this month but I had already taken at least 8 pills before I had sex could it be my body trying to adjust to the pill? PLEASE SOMEONE RESPOND IM REALLY SCARED!

Jennifer

AskDocWeb: It is much more likely that this is just the typical irregularity that occurs for the first three months while your body is adjusting to the new pill.

Subj: Am I at risk?
Date: 6/10/2008
I had been taking ortho-tri cyclen for almost a week when I had unprotected sex for the first time. Am I at risk? If so what is the risk?

Sarah

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately “almost a week” is less than the 7 days that a backup form of birth control is recommended. The risk is that you could be pregnant if you don’t use that extra protection.

Subj: I haven’t gotten my period yet
Date: 6/16/2008
I’m on day 2 of my green pills …. And I haven’t gotten my period yet! This is my 3rd pack … And the 2nd time I got my period, it started before I reached the green pills …. Is this normal? Should I be worried?

Kara

AskDocWeb: You have to expect some variation during the first three months of starting a new pill. It should start any day now.

Subj: Very discouraged with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo
Date: 6/19/2008
I started to take Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo 8 months ago as a first time birth control user. The first month was completely fine, I had no problems. The second month through the present I have been having some extreme side effects. I have never been moody around my period time and since the 2nd month of taking this pill I have episodes of rage, extreme sensitivity, hysterical crying, and times of depression (of which I’ve never had before. Also I have only had very light cramps, as few as once a year, and now I get very severe striking cramps so bad that I cant move when they occur. When I have intercourse, I lose my sex drive very quickly and cannot orgasm ever. I am very discouraged with this pill, I have already tried the patch but it didn’t seem to work for me. Are there ANY other contraceptives that are worth taking?

Stacy

AskDocWeb: The standard answer is that your physician knows which birth control pill will be the best one for you, but the truth is that it is often a case of trial and error in finding what will work best for a particular individual. The most qualified individual to make an informed guess is your doctor. Read more feedback
