Subj: Worried about being pregnant
I was taking Ortho Tri Cyclin Lo for seven months. Then I stopped because I was no longer with my partner. I have a new partner now and have been back on the same pill for a month now. I am currently in my fourth week (the green pills) and I missed a pill. I usually take them at 6pm every day. I forgot this one and didn’t take it until about 3am. The next day I took my next pill at 6pm. Two days later my partner and I had unprotected sex. I was wondering if I need to get EPC since I missed that one green pill? Am I at risk of getting pregnant from it? Is there another birth control method that works better than the Ortho Lo? I really don’t know what to do.
AskDocWeb: No, your risk of getting pregnant is almost nil. If missing pills is a problem you might consider changing over to the birth control patch. And since you are with a different partner you should consider using condoms to protect yourself from a STD.
Subj: Brown discharge
I’ve been taking TriNessa for almost a full month now and two side effects are really bothering me. First, I have small amounts of brown discharge daily. I don’t know what that is or if it will go away once I adjust to the pill. Secondly, I have moderate to severe external vaginal itching and dryness that is really creating a problem. Is this serious? Will these side effects disappear? What can I do to ease the annoyance? Thanks.
AskDocWeb: The brown discharge or breakthrough bleeding should stop within the first three months of use. The external vaginal itching is a problem that should be checked out by your gyn, by vaginal exam to check for a yeast infection.
Subj: Girlfriend’s problems
My girlfriend is typically a very self-confident and happy go lucky girl. The past 5 or 6 weeks she has become incredibly moody, depressed, and her self-esteem has suffered greatly. She has also been experiencing upset stomachs and headaches. She switched her pill to ortho-lo a week or two before this all began. She has also lost her sex drive and become less affectionate. Can this be a direct cause of switching pills and what would you recommend? Go off the pill for a month and use condoms to see if this is the cause?
AskDocWeb: Yes, this can be a direct cause of her birth control. Unfortunately, it takes about 3 months for a woman’s body to return to normal after they discontinue most birth control pills. A better option would be for her to talk with her doctor about adjusting or changing her birth control pills.
Subj: Stopping ortho tri-cyclen lo
Date: 12/27/2004I have been on some form of pill for about 15 years (am 30). I am not trying to get pregnant, but I want to stop taking ortho tri-cyclen lo because I think it’s made me gain weight and also totally obliterated my sex drive. I feel very emotional in the last week of ‘on’ pills, and I get very bloated then, too. My question is, is it safe to stop taking it mid-week? i.e. I am in the worst week now (3rd) and want to just stop, rather than finishing out these last 4 pills. Is this ok?
AskDocWeb: Your mensis will change once you stop and may not be normal for about three months. After taking the pill for 15 years it is a good decision that you have made to quit. Yes, you can stop at mid week.
Subj: Slurred speech
I have been on Nuva ring for two months(samples from Doc) with a lapse of one month because of insurance approval now I have been back on for one month. I have had a few bouts of weakness, feeling faint and one case of slurred speech that only lasted about 30 seconds. I have seen my regular dr. for tests no positive results on any test. Could this be an allergic reaction to the ring?
AskDocWeb: Without knowing your age, it’s difficult to say, but you may have suffered a small stroke. This is something that may not be recognizable on a regular exam. You would have to see a heart specialist to check this out.
Subj: I hate it!
I have been on the otrho lo for 3 months, I hate it. I have gained weight, I’m tired, acne, spotting, severe cramping – I hate it.
AskDocWeb: Your body is going through a change, but by the end of the third month you should have been feeling better. Check with your doctor on changing your birth control pill to another one. This one definitely is not working for you.
Subj: Spotting after missing 2 pills
I am on Ortho-cyclen and I missed 2 pills but followed the directions stating to take both pills on the same day then continue to take one like normal but I have started to spot. Do I Stop taking them and let my period come or continue to take them?
AskDocWeb: Spotting is normal when there is a break in taking the pills. If you miss more than one pill during the cycle, do stop them and start a new pack as directed.
Subj: Changes in skin condition
I started using the birth control pill to help out my terrible acne. I was on Mircette for a year before switching to Ortho Tricyclen because my acne did not improve. I am about to finish my sixth pack and although I do notice improvements in my skin, I still have constant breakouts all over my face, especially on my chin where I didn’t really break out as much before getting on Ortho Tricyclen. I was wondering if the improvements I am seeing in my acne will continue after the six months or is this pretty much how my skin will remain? I also notice that during my second week of each pill pack my acne gets significantly worse, is there any explanation for this? I’ve also notice that my acne that used to be large undergrounders are quicker or immediately turn into white heads so I was wondering if this was a sign of improvement? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
AskDocWeb: You will continue to see improvement with your acne with this birthcontrol pill. Try using an over the counter acne cleanser too. Everyone’s skin condition is different, yours just needs a little more help. Skin cleansing is very important and to use an estringent after cleansing.
Can I be preg wit a yeast infection and can u miss 2 months of yo period and still be preg?
AskDocWeb: Yes, you can get pregnant while having a yeast infection. I recommend you get and use a home pregnancy test immediately.
Subj: I have a question
Hi, I’ve been taking Ortho tri-cyclen tablets for over 7 years to help control my Endometriosis. So far so good. My endo is under control, and I’ve experienced far less cramping then other birth control pills. However, my question is this, I plan on trying to conceive in June and I’ve been told you need to be off of birth control for quite some time otherwise conceiving will be difficult. I’m 31 years old and this is going to be my first child. Is this true? I’m wondering if I should stop my pill and discuss with my doctor if I should start taking prenatals? I have a girlfriend who also was on birth control for many years and stopped taking her birth control for 1 month and got pregnant. (with twins!) Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks…..
AskDocWeb: You can become pregnant soon after being off the pill, but usually for the first three months your period may be irregular. Until they are regular with no breakthrough bleeding it will be hard to get pregnant. I suggest you start taking prenatal vitamins while you are trying to get pregnant.
Subj: When to stop
Is it safe just to stop taking ortho-tri-cyclin after 6 months?
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is safe to stop taking Ortho Tri-cyclin after 6 months, or any number of months.
Subj: 2 periods?
I am on the birth control pill and I got my period two times this month is that normal
AskDocWeb: Yes, one of them is likely to be breakthrough bleeding rather than a period. This is normal for the first three months of use. If it continues longer, consult your physician for a change in your birth control.
Subj: Extremely moody
I have been taking Ortho Tri-Cycline for about 3 years. I have not taken it for the past couple of months. Lately, I have been feeling extremely moody. Could this be related to going off of the pill?
AskDocWeb: Yes it could be related. Another month and your hormones should be back to normal.
Subj: Moody with Trinessa
I just started taking Trinessa and I feel more moody than I used to. I’ve heard some scary stuff about Trinessa. Should I switch to Ortho-tricyclen? Please, any advice…
AskDocWeb: Yes you could change to Ortho Tri-cyclen®, if your mood swings are more than you can handle. When you visit your doctor, tell him/her what is going on so they can make the correct change for another birth control.
Subj: Depo NOT recommended
Back in September I got the Depo shot. Within the first month or so, I gained weight and started getting terrible acne. I’ve never had a problem with acne, only a couple pimples around my period each month. When it was time to get my next shot of depo (December) I decided to switch to Ortho Tri-Cyclen and so far I am still having major problems with acne. I am hoping that it will just be a matter of time and adjustment to slow the acne. If anyone else has had this problem, could you tell me how long it took for the side affects of the depo to go away? It’s extremely frustrating and depressing and makes me want to stay in the house, my face is so bad at times! I’d never recommend Depo to anyone! Thanks to everyone for sharing their own experiences.
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says it could take three months for the depo to be completely out of your system. Make sure you stay away from deep fried foods, they are bad for your skin.
Subj: Just started Ortho-tri cyclen lo
I am 17 and just started taking Ortho-tri cyclen lo yesterday. I woke up this morning at 5 vomiting and dizzy and I’ve been nauseous all day. After reading all this feedback I’m very apprehensive toward finishing this month and waiting to adjust. My skin can be easily irritated and I frequently get migraines, so I’m nervous that this might only make my problems worse.
AskDocWeb: With sensitive skin you may want to replace soap with a skin sensitive product.
Subj: Long periods
I have been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for about 6 months now. I have always had bad cramps and the contraceptive did not help at all.(which is why I’m taking it) Lately my periods start at the beginning of the 3rd week of my pills(blue) and end after the 4th is over(green).
AskDocWeb: That’s two weeks of having your menses which is abnormal. Suggest you have a pelvic exam and discuss this with your gynecologist. Read more feedback
