Subj: Cold medicine?
Date: 10/27/2008
I have been taking ortho tri cyclen lo for over a year and I resently was taking cold medicine (Nyquil) the week after taking it I had sex. Will the Nyquil counter act with my birth control causing me to get pregnant?
Jess
AskDocWeb: No, the only over-the-counter products (that we know of) that might affect the effectiveness of your birth control are herbal products containing St. John’s Wort (hypericum perforatum). Those products may also result in breakthrough bleeding. There are many prescription drugs that could affect the effectiveness of your birth control; antibiotics, anticonvulsant, and drugs that increase the metabolism. Some examples include barbiturates, phenylbutazone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, felbamate, topiramate, oxcarbazepine, rifampin, and griseofulvin.

Subj: Unprotected sex
Date: 10/31/2008
I have been on ortho tri-cyclen for about two years now. I missed two of my blue pills last Friday and Saturday. When I remembered I took them on Sunday. We had unprotected sex. Do you think I could be pregnant?
Amber
AskDocWeb: The short answer is yes, there is a possibility that you could be pregnant. Did you follow the directions about throwing out the rest of the pack and starting a new one? It makes a difference which week you are in when missing 2 consecutive pills. Please take the time to read the directions.
Subj: Increased sex drive

Is this normal and has anyone else felt this way because all that I hear on this site is complaints. I too, was on ortho lo for 2 years and had bad acne, I also had beautiful skin before.

Subj: Missed a dose
Date: 11/5/2008
I have been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for around 3 years and last week missed a dose, resulting in taking a double dose the next day. In the following days I experienced breakthrough bleeding. It has lasted for three days now and does not coincide with my regular menstrual pattern. I have read that this may be a sign of pregnancy? Can you offer any solutions?
J
AskDocWeb: Missing pills is known to be a cause of spotting, light bleeding, and breakthrough bleeding, even when you make up the missed pills.

Subj: What to expect when I stop
Date: 11/5/2008
I have been on Ortho tri cyclen lo for about 9 years. I am wondering what to expect when I stop taking this birth control???
Andrea
AskDocWeb: If you suffered from female pelvic pain, acne, irregular periods, PMS or other condition, that may return when you discontinue using the drug. Your period should start again within three months after you stop taking the pill. Most women will have a period within four to six weeks. Those women who took the pill to regulate their menstrual cycles may not have a period for many months (post-pill amenorrhea). If you don’t have a period within three months, take a pregnancy test to make sure you’re not pregnant. If after six months you still don’t have a period, see your doctor.
Subj: Giving up on hormone based birth control
Date: 11/8/2008
I have been using birth control for 12 years, with all the results listed on these pages and have decided to stop using any hormonally influenced drugs. I was on ortho tricyclen for the first four years with only minor emotional side effects (and potential weight gain which was my reason for switching). I then took ortho evra (the patch) and had no real side effects except for the initial week (i.e. hives). Next, tried Depo for ease of use (killed my sex drive). Finally tried ortho tricyclen lo, wanting a lower dose (have been on it for 2-3 years). Everything was fine until the past two months. Spotting (breakthrough) after my period for a week, major mood swings (i.e. crazy person), migraines which I hadn’t attributed to this, and recently, loss of sex drive. I will be consulting my doctor about the use of a non-hormone IUD.

Subj: Unnatural and uncomfortable
Date: 11/8/2008

Subj: Horrible side effects
Date: 11/10/2008
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT GO ON Ortho Tricyclen Lo. I tried it about 5 years ago with HORRIBLE SIDE EFFECTS. I immediately gained 12 pounds (all within the first three weeks… no kidding) and most of it was in my stomach and sides. I work out religiously, so this was a shock for me. Suddenly I had love handles and back fat. My doc said “it’s just your body adjusting. Give it time”. In the four months I “gave it time” the weight continued to pile on. I bled every two weeks (lasting 7-10 days). I suffered two yeast infections. And I went from extreme depression to extreme anger. When I quit… it took another three monts for the irregular periods and the irritability and depression to go away. Since then I have NEVER BEEN ABLE TO GET RID OF THE FAT AROUND MY MIDDRIFT.
I work on TV and lost my modelling contract, which has cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars. I no longer earn what I use to. I also had to eventually buy an entirely new wardrobe because my clothes no longer fit. My sweaters are too tight, and my waste size went from 26″ to 34″. I exercise 90 minutes a day 5 days a week. Even when I intensified it to 2 hours 7x week and put myself on a strict diet… the fat would not come off my middle. My trainer couldn’t believe it. He had never seen anything like it before. Last month I decided the only way this fat is coming off is if I get liposuction. It will probably take me another two years to save up for it… and I will have to use a week’s of vacation, too. Not to mention I must undergo a risky surgical proceedure. By then it will have been 7 years since I quit Ortho Tricyclen Lo. For the four months I was on it… it has cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars. I just want to get my life back. Do NOT EVER go on Ortho Tricyclen Lo.

Date: 11/13/2008
I’m on the Ortho Tri- Cyclen Lo and my husband and I are wanting to get pregnant when he gets home from Iraq so I was thinking about stoping the pill but not sure where to stop or what is the biggest risk of getting pregnant I need help understanding this pill…I guess what I’m asking If I start the pill where should I stop to get the results of getting pregnant?
Proud_armywife
AskDocWeb: It is possible to get pregnant just two or three days after you discontinue the pill but that is not guaranteed. There are many factors involved, your fertility, his fertility, where you are in your cycle when you discontinue the use of birth control pills, etc. all affect your chances of getting pregnant. Some couples try for months without success and others take right away. Good luck.
Subj: Abdominal pain and sore breast
Date: 11/13/2008
Can you get abdominal pain and sore breast after you period went away?
Nikki
AskDocWeb: If you mean, can that happen between periods then yes, it is possible to have abdominal pain and sore breasts anytime.

Date: 11/14/2008

Krista
AskDocWeb: It does happen in a small percentage of patients. The home testing kits available at your local drugstore are worth the money for the peace of mind they can provide.
Subj: Is it safe to have unprotected sex?
Date: 11/16/2008
I have a major question! I am a day one starter meaning I started my pills on the first day of my period. On the package it says that it you don’t need a alternate method during sex. I am on my 11 day on the pill and i have been taking it on time every day and haven’t miss one. Is it safe to have unprotected sex? Would i become pregnant? People say it takes 7 days for the hormones to kick in…
Josalyn
AskDocWeb: According to the Physician’s Desk Reference under Day 1 Start, “You will not need to use a back-up method of birth control since you are starting the pill at the beginning of your period.”
Those who use the Sunday Start are instructed to use a back-up method of birth control during the first seven days of the first pack. Once you are through the first pack the back-up birth control is not needed, unless of course you miss pills.
Subj: Safe from pregnancy?
Date: 11/16/2008
WHEN IS IT THAT YOU BECOme safe from pregancy while your on ortho tri-cyclen lo?…and is it possible to get pregnant if yOur in yOur secOnd week and miss day and had unprotected sex with a partner which has came inside you?
Shabraya
AskDocWeb: Missing any pills increases the chance of getting pregnant. That is why it is important to remember to take them at the same time every day. It is possible but, if you made up for missing one pill by taking two pills the next day then the chance is very small. Read more feedback
