Subj: Constant yeast infection
Date: 11/29/2008
Hey, I was on ortho tri cyclen reg, and had constant yeast infection, minus the itching, for about 6 months. Could switching to lo help this problem? Is this common?

T-hug

AskDocWeb: It may or may not, vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) is also listed as one of the possible side effects of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. The 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference says that there is an increased risk of this type of infection but they don’t say how common it is.

Subj: Passed out
Date: 11/29/2008
My daughter started taking ortho one week ago for her acne. She been experiencing nausea. This tends to make her not want to eat. Today she got up. Maybe to quick, not sure. Walked to BR and passed out. She states she awoke shaking and kicking at BR door. She said her tongue felt huge. She does not remember which position she was lying on floor. Maybe her tongue was blocking airway a bit? Maybe she had vaso-vegal response? Maybe she had low blood sugar? I had heard a story that a young girl was taking these pills and had some similar issues, which at first was thought to be seizures. It was said that after testing that they traced it to her birth control. Not sure what kind she was taking. Have you heard of such a thing? Please let me know. I am going to continue to have her take them. I will monitor her nausea, diet, and any further episodes. HELP!

Kimberly

AskDocWeb: Until her doctor checks her out you are only guessing about the cause and we would hate to hear that you guessed wrong. Please don’t guess about something this serious, get medical help.

Subj: Side effects of ortho tri-cyclen
Date: 12/5/2008
I don’t think I’ve gained much weight since I started ortho tri-cyclen 4 months ago, but now I’m concerned that I will. If I do, is it easy to lose if I exercise and eat well? Or will it not be easy? I also never vomited more in my life before I started the pill. I hate it. Plus, my breasts ALWAYS hurt and I’m so emotional, and I got severe acne when I started that hasn’t gone away yet. Should I just stop the pill? Is there any pill that doesn’t make you gain weight?

Amanda

AskDocWeb: Discontinuing or switching is something you should discuss with your health care provider. If there is a birth control pill that has not been associated with weight gain, we have yet to hear about it.

Subj: Began taking the pill at a weird time
Date: 12/8/2008
I am 19 years old, and I recently started taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. I’m on my eleventh pill. Two days ago, I began to bleed, and yesterday it became quite heavy. This morning I saw large blood clots, with consistencies that I’d never had before, and am experiencing a good deal of abdominal pain. Due to a highly irregular period, I began taking the pill at a weird time for my cycle. Should I keep up with the pill (will it eventually regulate my cycle anyway) or is there some larger problem at hand?

Margaret

AskDocWeb: Since you started taking the pill at a “weird time” we suggest you check with your doctor to find out if there is something to be concerned about or not.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 12/10/2008
I’m on my third month of ortho tri cyclen lo, and I’ve gained weight that I just cant seem to get rid of. The weight gain is only around my lower stomach. I’ve always had a very flat stomach and abs, but now it wont go down. I’m not pregnant, so is there any chance this will go away?

Kayla

AskDocWeb: It is not likely to go away without considerable effort on your part. Weight gain around the lower stomach (belly fat) notoriously difficult to lose.

Subj: Is it safe?
Date: 12/10/2008
I was taking ortho tricyclin lo and had no complaints. I stopped taking it for over a year because I wasn’t sexually active…do a need to see a doctor to start taking the pills again to be evaluated or is it safe to start using them again?

KB

AskDocWeb: To be on the safe side, check with your doctor. We believe in getting yearly physicals to catch any possible problems early.

Subj: Could I be pregnant?
Date: 12/10/2008
I have been on the birth control for one month and I was on the green tablets wen me and my boyfriend had intercourse…he ejaculated inside and later that afternoon I got my period.. could I be pregnant?

unkown

AskDocWeb: Since you got your period, that means that the current egg did not get fertilized so no, you are not pregnant.

Subj: Effectiveness of the pills
Date: 12/10/2008
Hi, I’m 25 years old and have been on ortho tryi cyclen for almost 3 years now. It has cleared up my skin so good, my appetite has increase over time, and my sex drive decreased. Should I be concerned or are these minor issues? Also I’ve been trying to grow out my hair and heard prenatal vitamins or just a multi vitamin will work too, can I take a multi vitamin without causing complications to effectiveness of the pills duty to work right?

Sara

AskDocWeb: The increase in appetite seems to be common with birth control pills as well as the weight gain that results from overeating. You will have to decide if the decrease in sex drive is minor or not. Vitamins have no affect on the effectiveness of birth control pills.

Subj: Late taking the pill?
Date: 12/13/2008
My girlfriend got on the pill about 2 weeks ago. and she was late taking it by 3hours and 25 min. Does this effect anything?

Travis

AskDocWeb: There is no reduction in the level of protection. It may effect her remembering the taking of future pills but that’s about it.

Subj: Sexually active?
Date: 12/13/2008
Hi, I an 20 byrs, never been on any kind of birth control in my life. Just recently I went to the doctor and told her I wanted to be on birth control, because I have really bad cramping during my periods, and because I suffer from breakouts on my face. My question is, do I have to be sexually active in order to be on birth control?

Jessica

AskDocWeb: No, you do not need to be sexually active in order to be put on birth control pills.

Subj: Gaining weight after going off the pill
Date: 12/13/2008
I had a bad experience with my last physical. The dr that I went to told me I had a “beautiful cervix” which was kind of odd. I didn’t go for my physical this year (I was due in April and it’s now December). Because I didn’t get a physical, I did not get any more pills, which lead me to the decision to go off. My last month of pills was in April and I noticed that between summer and now, I have gained nearly 50lbs. I *LOVED* being on my Ortho Tri-Cyclen because I lost a lot of weight…probably near 30lbs when I started because I was so sick and could not eat. My face is a human pizza face lately too. I used to think that I was just eating wrong and that caused me to gain weight, but there’s days when I don’t eat at all, all day, and I actually still gain weight…if someone can please help me…I’d appreciate the information.

AskDocWeb: If you are uncomfortable with your current doctor please choose another one rather than skipping physicals. You may have a hormonal, thyroid or other problem that needs attention.

Subj: In the middle of nowhere
Date: 12/14/2008
My doctor just started me off on ortho tri cyclen lo this month. I never took birth controls before. Unlike everyone else that takes their first bc pill on the first day of their cycle, I took it in the middle of no where. The reason for this is becuz I have a period two times a month and I dont know when my period is going to come. Therefore the doctor suggest to just start it. On the 14th day I started to have breakthrough bleeding and it end up to be similar to a period. It is now the 26 day and there is still bleeding going on. MY doctor told me to continue taking it. My question is if my cycle will return to normal and have my period when I am up to the green pills or will I continue to have my period in the middle of no where even on the pill?

Candy

AskDocWeb: There is no way of knowing other than just continuing to see what happens. It may take up to three months for your periods to become regular.

Subj: How long to get pregnant?
Date: 12/12/2008
I am finished with my first week of pills and have been on ortho tri cyclen for 7 years. Any idea on how long it will take me to get pregnant if I stop taking my pill now?

Veronica

AskDocWeb: Not really, the text (PDR 2008) says there may be some delay in becoming pregnant after you stop taking the pill but it doesn’t give any statistics. If your periods were irregular before you started taking the pill, it may be advisable to postpone conception until you start menstruating regularly.

Subj: Difficulty breathing
Date: 12/15/2008
I’m 17 years old and I just started birth control to help regulate my menstrual cycle. I have noticed that lately I have been having bouts where I have difficulty breathing. I do not have asthma and I was wondering if it is a side effect of Ortho Tri Cyclen.

Judy

AskDocWeb: That is not listed as a side effect. Any difficulty breathing should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Finger numbness
Date: 12/16/2008
I read one person said they have finger numbness. I also have experienced this. I thought it had something to do with my migranes, but I think both the migranes and finger numbness has something to do with the birth control. I have been on Ortho tri cyclen lo for about 5 years and I am 25 years old. I bled for 3 months when I first started taking it. Then things stabilized and I was doing fine up until about a year ago. Now I feel crazy. I have HORRIBLE migranes with the vision change and vomiting. I am very irritable. Mood swings. Hair loss(not major, but noticeable). skin problems(acne and red face). I feel like crap more than I feel good. I am planning on getting off it at the end of this pack in about 2 weeks. I hope it goes well. I just want to feel like myself again. I would like to know if the finger numbness is normal or dangerous. I also had numbness in my face one time. It is very scarey.

Sarah

Subj: Trinessa
Date: 12/16/2008
My friend told me about orthotricyclin, and I decided I wanted to try it. When I got my prescription it was replaced with trinessa. I have been taking it for a month and 3 days now. So far, I havn’t had major problems except right before my period me and my finace got into a big fight, and it was mainly me who kept raving on. I even considered breaking up with him, just because he didn’t bring me food. For the most part, I have taken the pill around the same time, except a few times I missed it by at most 3 hours. Me and my finace just recently had unprotected sex and I just started taking the white pills again after the green. Are the pills working yet? Could I be pregnant from taking it late just recently? btw, I still really want orthotricyclin, will the effects be the same with mood swings?

Jasmine

AskDocWeb: It is highly unlikely to become pregnant because of taking the pill three hours late. The side effects of the generic are the same as for the original. Read more feedback
