Subj: Long periods

Question I have been on ortho lo for about 3 months now I lost over 23 pounds and am very moody and get depressed easily, now for the past two month I have been getting my period a week early and would be having it threw my period week and then it will stop, is this normal, is my body still getting used to the Birth control?

Subj: Different side effects from generic

I’ve been on birth control since I was 18 (I am 28 now). In the past year, I have started taking Trinessa. It’s the 4th BC brand I’ve ever used and I’ve noticed side effects that are different from the others (even its brand name equivalent Ortho-Tricyclen). For example, if I miss one pill, I start spotting immediately, which I understand is probably normal. However, sometimes I start my period or start spotting heavily even when I DON’T miss any pills. I also get HORRIBLE mood swings! I am not sexually active, I take it to help with acne and cramps. Any suggestions as to what generic I can switch to?

I am concerned about my nursing my son and taking ortho tricyclen. When I was on ortho before having my son, who is now eighteen months old, I was on it for controlled bleeding during my menstrual cycle as well as for cystic acne. I am please to say that both the bleeding and the acne became quite positive. My cystic acne went away, skin was as clear as a blue sky and the bleeding wasn’t as bad, though I still had flood days.
Well, I have a question, I have been reading online that breastfeeding a boy, while on a combo pill, could lead to sexual issues later in life. Is this true? Gosh, I don’t want to take the pill and then end up with a son who has sexual issues (gay, bi, whatever is considered a sexual issue) and have my selfishness to have my acne cleared up, to be the problem. Does the combo pill have any effects on sexuality as it relates to being attracted to the same sex, if male? I really need help with my skin as it is horribly sore and itchy. I am not done breastfeeding. I probably won’t be for some time. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

AskDocWeb: We have not seen anything that would indicate sexual problems might be caused later in life from breastfeeding while on a combo pill. If new research has been published then please share it.

I used to take Apri before and I loved it because it made my skin so beautiful and glowing but I had to stop because of the cost. After 3-4 months of stopping, I developed acne again. My doctor prescribed ortho tri cycen lo, she said its almost the same as apri. I’ve been using it for more than two weeks now (prior to using it I had acne on my chin already) my acne seems to be getting more and more not only on my chin but all over my face. I believe its cystic acne and it’s very painful and bumpy. I want to stop taking the pill but I’m scared that it might get worse if I stop. Should I stop taking OTC lo as soon as possible and get another bc pill prescription? How many weeks/months does OTC lo becomes effective?

AskDocWeb: It appears there may be some confusion about the non-contraceptive benefits of Ortho Tri-Cylen Lo. Unlike Ortho Tri-Cylen, there is no beneficial affect on acne listed in the 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference (page 2414).

Subj: Abnormal bleeding

Well I been on ortho tri-cyclen lo for a little over a yr now and I’m experiencing abnormal bleeding. I got my period on the 2nd of June and it was regular, now on the 19th of this month I started bleeding and have been for the past 11 days. Should I be concerned?

Hi, I’ve been using tri cyclen lo for a month now and I forgot to take my pill one day about half way through the month and then the next day I took it about 4 hrs later than I usually do. and I started my period a week before the green pills and now I’m on day 8 and its still going strong. I’m worried about the problems this should cause. What should I do?

I have been on Orth Tri Cyclen Lo for about a year and a half and I have noticed a difference in my weight. I was 130 pounds and currently weight 148 pounds. I did everything I could to loose the weight. I had a personal trainer, proper dieting, water only etc… But it just wont go away… I am thinking about stoping the pill all together or look for an alternative.

I’m on ortho tri cylen lo and this month will be my first month of taking the pack. I’m on the last 4 pills and a still haven’t started my period yet. Should I be worried? Last month I had two periods in one month because of getting off one and starting another one. And losing that one. Could that throw my period off? Please help. Thanks

AskDocWeb: Yes, changing birth control pills can throw your period off and amenorrhea (absence of period) is listed as a possible side effect of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.

I started the pills of ortho tri-cyclen. The 6/14/09 and had been taking the enemgence pill also known as plan B. To make sure I wouldn’t be pregant. Toke a test NAGITIVE the 24th of this month. And got the pill plan B on the 25th of that month as I’m still on the birth control pill but I missed my expected period. Which now I’m spotting during my normal cycle, my brest are sore cramps but no period; exspect for whitish brown mixer like blood discharge. I’ve only been using the birth control pill for a month almost. Is it normal to miss your period during your cycle of menstration.

I used the ortho tri – cyclen low for 4 yrs. I just stop a month ago. I have my period for 10 days after, then I have a lower back pain, cramps at abdomen. I just wanna know if that’s the side effect and I just wanna how long I’m gonna wait to get pregnant… thanks,

AskDocWeb: It is possible for you to become pregnant any time after discontinuing the pill and cramping is normal. The length of time it takes to get pregnant after stopping birth control pills varies from days to sometimes more than a year, too much to give a specific time.

I did a quick start and starting taking the pill 2 weeks before my next period. I was wondering am I going to get my period when I’m suppose to or one week later because of the pills.

AskDocWeb: Starting the pill 2 weeks before your next period puts you into unknown territory because your timing is being forced to reset to a new schedule. It may take a few months for your periods to become regular again.

I just started talking trinessa and I was just doing a little research. It seems that many people are complaining about their increase in acne. I was wondering if this is the case for most people taking trinessa, also I use to have a mild acne problem and now its finally going away, I’m afraid that it will increase again.

Hi I am 19 years old and just started taking ortho tro cylen lo for almost 3 week. I have always had really clear skin but in the past week or so my face has been breaking out more then it ever has. Also after about a week after starting the pills I noticed my breasts size increased and have become very tender. (Which normally happens a week before I get my period but I am not due so I am thinking its the pill.) I know birth control takes about 3 months for your body to get used too but I was wondering if anyone else had the problem with their skin and how soon it cleared up? I haven’t noticed any mood changes yet if anything I think it helped me not be so emotional before I get my period but I’ll be on the look out and I already warned my boyfriend!!! LOL

I just started taking ortho-lo today, and after reading all these reviews, I already feel like stopping. Would it do any damage to my body? I’ve only taken one white pill.

AskDocWeb: Before discontinuing this pill you should talk with your doctor. There are no reports of any damage caused by stopping the pill however, your cycle will be disrupted for awhile and it may take some time for your body to adjust the change in hormone levels.

I started taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo about a week ago. My doctor told me it would be two cycles before I would be protected from pregnancy from the pill. However, all of the research I’ve done says anywhere from one-two weeks (Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo’s website says 7 pills). The last time I was on the pill, I was taking Ortho Tri Cyclen and the doctor told me two weeks. Two cycles just seems like a long time- am I way off base here? Thanks.

AskDocWeb: It seems likely that what you thought your doctor said wasn’t what he or she intended to say. According to the 2008 Physician’s Desk Reference, if you are a Sunday Start you are protected after taking the first seven pills.

DONT TAKE THIS PILL!!!!! I hate it! I’ve only been on it for 3 weeks, and I know that I should stay on it to see if the side effects pass, but 3 weeks is ENOUGH. I have become so irritable and such an emotional wreck I can’t even handle it. Not to mention I haven’t stopped spotting and on my second week I was hungry ALL the time. My moodiness is affecting all my relationships. I don’t even want to deal with it anymore to wait it out to see if it goes away after 3 months or whatever… I only started the pill to avoid pregnancy but honestly my relationship with my boyfriend was so much better before I started this pill. Take my word for it… ortho lo is bad news.

My girlfriend and I have had unprotected sex about 4 times in the past month. She has been using Ortho TRI-cyclen for the past year now. One week after we had our last intercourse, She misses her period. Could she be pregnant? Or, could it just be stress?
