Subj: PMS and cysts
Date: 1/27/2010
My daughter has been on ortho tricyclen lo for a couple years. She was prescribed to prevent recurrent large painful ovarian cysts. She also had very painful periods and bad PMS type mood swings. Since starting the cysts have gone away and not returned, and her periods are much much better. PMS and mood swings much improved. Also some weighloss possibly due to the lack of being bloated. Problem is that the trade off seems to be headaches. She is not very good about taking them at the same time each day and I suggested she take them in the morning when hormone levels are usually highest. Not sure if getting on a strict timing regimen would help? Is there a certain optimal time of day to take the pill? Also is ortho tricyclen low associated with headaches more than other birth control pills?

Becky

AskDocWeb: We’ve not heard of an optimal time of day but taking them at the same time each day makes it easier to remember to take then. By adding up the feedback about headaches reported with both pills, it appears there are about 40% more reports of headaches with Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo than there are with Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Subj: Constant UTIs
Date: 1/28/2010
I went on ortho tri cyclen lo to combat horrible cramps on the first day of my period. I had never before been on birth control, but figured at 21 I could try it out. I have never had any type of medical issue of any sort, especially nothing re-occuring. Anyways, just about a month after going on the pill I didn’t pee after sex. I try so hard to think back if I have ever done that before, and I really think I have, I always knew you wanted to, to avoid UTIs, but in this case I just simply forgot. About a week after, I had horrible burning when I urinated and went to the dr. He said he never saw such a bad UTI (I was peeing blood). Took an antibiotic, went away I was fine. ALWAYS peed after sex after that. The next month though, same thing. Months went by with the same thing happening and I noticed a pattern that it always came about the same time of the month (about a week or so before my period). I took all action against this – home cures, gyno visits wayyy to often, only drank water, took cranberry pills daily…nothing. Got an ultra sound to see if I had a kidney infection, nothing…finally went to a urologist. He prescribed me Hiprex, which is basically an oral antiseptic, making my bladder unihabitable. That worked for a few months and I got yet another one. I asked could this be from my birth control, as soon as I went on it, the frequent UTIs began, which once lead to yeast infections from the side effects of the antibiotics. EVERY dr. said absolutely not…no way. I went off of the pill on my own decision. My body in general feels normal again. So hard to explain but I do not have that constant thought about pain. My lower body was consantly burning. If you suffer from constant UTIs, pleasee look into your birth control. I wish someone told me this and didn’t make me feel crazy when I brought it up.

Subj: Lost weight on depo
Date: 1/29/2010
I have been on depo for 9 months know and lost weight could depo be the problem. After my third shot I was put on otho cyclen could that cause more weight lost?

Ashley

AskDocWeb: Both weight gain and weight loss are listed as possible side effects of Depo Provera. According to Brown University Health Services, 70 percent of women gain weight, 20 percent lose weight, and 10 percent have no weight change while taking Depo Provera.

Subj: Could I be pregnant?
Date: 1/30/2010
I started ortho lo January 17, 2010 and had unprotected sex on the 23rd(without my bf coming, but he had came in a condom an hour earlier). I got paranoid and took plan b the next day on the 24. I’ve had sore breasts for about a week and the past couple days I’ve had to pee a lot(I usually pee a lot anyway but it seemed more than normal). And I feel irritable and less in the mood for sex. There’s no way I could be pregnant right? At least not from these symptoms so soon. And I haven’t felt sick or unusually tired. I’m thinking the symptoms are from the pill.

Amie

AskDocWeb: The symptoms of pregnancy do not show up that fast. It usually takes between 2 to 8 weeks before the first signs of pregnancy show up.

Subj: Birth control failed

I was taking ortho tri-cyclen lo for almost 8 years and I found out this month that I am pregnant. And I never ever missed a pill. So I guess I will be having another child thanks to my failing birth control.

Subj: Problem with acne and sex drive
Date: 2/3/2010
I started taking BC in hopes of clearing my acne, but the first set my doc. gave me made no diff. just heavy spotting and 0 sexdrive. it was called Aviane. I asked my doc. for Othro tryclin, and he suggested a equivalent: Loestrine24 or he said he could perscribe me ortho tri lo, for some reason he didnt want to give me non-lo, why is that? I heard the best “cleared up my acne” stories from non-lo… anywho, I purchased the Loestrine24, but after looking up the side effects and seeing it can cause more Acne, I said heck no. I want ortho… but he’s only going to give me ortho lo. Is it because im very thin and petite? Does he think I cant handle the stronger dosage? Honestly what I want is a pill that will NOT KILL my sex drive, not give me heavy spotting, and clear up my skin! I dont care if I gain weight or whatever.. and I dont want to go through 50 bc brands to figure out “which works best”..any advice? Will ortho lo kill my sex drive? Will it help with my skin, or does only reg. ortho help with that? Thanks! btw m 21 if that matters.

Pam

AskDocWeb: There is no beneficial effect on acne listed for Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo in the 2010 Physician’s Desk Reference under Non-Contraceptive Health Benefits. However, there is an acne benefit listed for regular Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Subj: Side effects with Tri-Cyclen Lo?
Date: 2/4/2010
I have used Plan B the morning after pill and did not experience any side effects. My doctor just put me on Tri-Cyclen Lo today. I am nervous to take it because of all the mixed reviews I’ve heard. If I didn’t experience side effects with Plan B does it mean I have a low chance of experiencing side effects with Tri-Cyclen Lo?

My

AskDocWeb: While it may be comforting to think so we have seen no evidence to support that idea.

Subj: Bloating is tremendous
Date: 2/6/2010

I need to know when Ill be getting my period and when this bloating with go away! Does this get any easier within the next week?!!?

Emma

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately it can take up to three months for the body to adjust to a change in birth control pills.

Subj: Want to have a baby
Date: 2/7/2010
I have been on Ortho Lo since July of 2009 (was on Levora-1st BC in June 2009 but hated it), and love it – Ortho Lo. My moods are better, my cramping is not as bad, and my periods don’t last as long and aren’t as heavy. I do have some fatigue and some decreased sexual drive, but I think that’s in part to me working 1 1/2 hours from where I live. I had regular periods before I started birth control, and my husband and I want to have a baby within the next year and a half. I have read through quite a bit of this discussion, and I have seen that having irregular periods before starting birth control can possibly cause a delay in getting pregnant. Is this also true when I had regular periods before starting birth control? Thank you for your help! God Bless!

Becca

AskDocWeb: If you had regular periods before starting birth control then this is far less likely to be a problem after discontinuing them. Good luck.

Subj: Mood swings
Date: 2/9/2010
ive been on ortho tri cyclen for about 6 years its a fantastic bc pill except for the fact that i am more irritable than ever and my mood swings are bad enough that i was thinking about swtiching bc pills… would going on ortho tri cyclen lo help? i knwo it just has a lower dose of the estogen, but it that what wouuld help mood swings? other than weight gain, and mood swings i dont have any other complaints about tri cyclen… wondering if lo would help the weight/mood swings

Laura

AskDocWeb: If you read some of the feedback you will see that there are many posts about gaining weight and mood swings from those using Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo.

Subj: Hair loss
Date: 2/16/2010
I have been taking ortho tri cyclen lo for 2 months. My hair has been coming out really bad. Is the ortho tri cyclen any factor in this hair loss at all? I need answers. My hair did not start thinning until AFTER I started taking the pill!

Kala

AskDocWeb: The loss of scalp hair has been reported by Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo users but this side effect has been neither confirmed nor refuted by the manufacturer. (Source: 2010 Physician’s Desk Reference)

Subj: How long does it take
Date: 2/18/2010
How long does it take for tri sprintec to work before you can have sex?

Faith

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer says that another form of birth control should be used for the first seven days. After that you have the maximum protection provided by the pill.

Subj: Could I be pregnant?
Date: 2/18/2010
im on ortho tri cyclen lo and i got my period 2 days early befor i was saposted to get it and it only lasted 2 days. could i be pregnet?

Shannon

AskDocWeb: While it is possible to experience bleeding during pregnancy, that is not as likely as just having a variation in your period. The only way to know for sure is to use a pregnancy test. If you have been on the pill for more than three months when the bleeding occurred then you might want to check with your OB/GYN. There is a small chance that it could be implantation bleeding, also called implantation spotting.

Subj: Ortho-low side effects
Date: 2/23/2010
I have taken Ortho-low for 3 months. I am having mood swings, eating more, feeling depressed and having trouble with my sex drive. I am planing on going off of it at the end of this month.
