Subj: Expired birth control
Date: 2/25/2010
im currently on ortho tricyclen 28 and realized they expired in September of 09. It is Feb 2010 so can i still use them for the month until i can get into my doc to get more?
AFM
AskDocWeb: Sorry AFM, using any expired medication is not recommended. This is one of those situations where you use your backup form of birth control until you can get more.
Subj: Went off Ortho Try-Cyclen Lo
Date: 2/26/2010
So I went off Ortho Try-Cyclen Lo 3 months ago and have still not got my next period. Is this normal? I know for a fact that I am not pregnant. Should I be concerned?
Ashlynn
AskDocWeb: Although the cause of irregularity is usually common and harmless, if it persists more than a couple of months, it is a good idea to see your doctor to determine if treatment is necessary.
Subj: Change in periods?
Date: 2/28/2010
I’ve been on OTC low for 10 years now. My periods have always been 3-4 days on the pill. However, my last period it was only a day and half and it was very light. Is it possible for your periods to change like this?
Shell
AskDocWeb: Yes, many women have the same experience. In most case as long as the cycle remains regular the shorter period is just a normal variation and is not a cause for concern. I can be scary if it is unexpected or unfamiliar but there is no reason to freak out. This also happens to women who are not on the pill.
Subj: Anxiety, depression, and mood swings
Date: 3/2/2010
I have ben on Ortho-tri cyclen for about 2.5 years and I have had severe anxiety, depression, and mood swings. I thought I was just an emotional person b/c it had been going on so long. Then my relationship ended and I stopped taking it. I had about 3 months without ever getting emotional or upset- totally normal. God it felt good. Then I decided that I wanted to start back up b/c i was getting really bad acne being off of it (great for clear complexion) and I am depressed AGAIN! It happened so fast. It is very obvious that the pill has issues and despite all the positives, I need to stop.

Subj: Increase chance of pregnancy?
Date: 3/4/2010
I’m currently on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, and the other day(Tuesday. Today is now Thrusday) I forgot to bring my pills with me(I take them at 8:30 every morning) and didn’t get home til about 7:30 that night. I went to take it as soon as I got home, but dropped the pill and couldn’t find it, so I just took Wensday’s pill. I was on week 2 and about half way through. My boyfriend is currently away in the Air Force but may come home within the next few weeks for a few days and I was wondering if this could increase the chance of pregnancy by any chance?
Ashleigh
AskDocWeb: As long as one pill is taken each day and no days are skipped there is change in the level of protection.
Subj: Weight gain?
Date: 3/8/2010
so you’re saying that everyone who takes tri cyclen WILL gain 15-20 pounds no matter what?
Kristen
AskDocWeb: No, according to the manufacturer, some women lose weight while taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen however, there are far more reports of gaining 15 to 20 pounds.
Subj: Switch from generic Sprintec
Date: 3/8/2010
I have been on Tri Lo Sprintec (generic Ortho Lo) for almost a year. Due to changes in my insurance, last month I had to go back to the actual Ortho Tri -Cyclen Lo. I had my normal menstrual cycle about a month ago then started on the Ortho Lo. My next menstrual cycle was supposed to start 5 days ago but nothing yet. I have never missed any pills while on either the Sprintec or the Ortho Lo. I am absoltely religious about taking my pill at the same time every night and never miss! Could the switch from the generic Sprintec back to the Ortho Lo have disrupted my cycle? I’ve only had intercourse once in the past several months, and that was a week before my last period, a little over 5 weeks ago.
Abby
AskDocWeb: There is not supposed to be any difference between the generic drug and the original but sometimes there is. In this case there is a rumor about the quality of the solvent that binds the pills together, that it may have some unintended side effects. We are looking for more information about this. If anyone else has a problem with Tri Lo Sprintec, please share your experience.
Subj: Trinessa and tri sprintec
Date: 3/9/2010
I have been on the same birth control for about 9 years, Trinessa. I just went to get my pers refilled and I walked out with tri-sprintec. I know that trinessa and tri sprintec are generic brands for ortho tri, but I am a little nervous on switching after 9 years. Could my body not recognize this other generic form of bc? or will I have some crazy mood swings like the rest of the ladies who also posted on this page? I dont know how my body will respond to switching pills, even tho they are both generics for othro tri. Does Trinessa and tri sprintec cover the same exact issues? Please help educate me.
Nichole
AskDocWeb: Both Trinessa and tri sprintec are generics of Ortho Tri-Cyclen and cover the exact same issues. In most cases they have the same benefits and side effects.
Subj: Terrified of acne
Date: 3/10/2010
Hello! I am 18 years old, and have just started taking Ortho-tri Cyclen Lo this week. I’ve been on it for only a couple days…no symptoms yet. However; I am a very skinny girl (weigh only 100lbs and am 5″3), and I have a VERY clear face. I rarely, if ever, get any form of acne. I lay in the tanning bed, which helps improve my skin, and I exercise A LOT. So, after reading some of the feedback on Ortho-Lo, I’m VERY frightened! Having never had acne, I’m considering quitting this BC all together, bc of that sole reason. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t caused any acne yet, but I’m absolutely terrified that it will. I’m also very scared about the weight gain that a few have mentioned. When I visit my regular doctor, what should I suggest her switch me too? I got on BC bc of my heavy flow, HORRIBLE PMS, agonizing cramps, and irregular periods. I want something that will keep my face CLEAR, improve my PMS symptoms, and keep my flow regular. I don’t care about the price, bc my insurance pays for it. What do you recommend that would help me? PLEASE help!!! Thank you!
Amie

Subj: My period has not gone away
Date: 3/15/2010
I started taking ortho tri cyclen lo when my period began (last Sunday). It has now been 9 days and my period has not gone away. I am just spotting, but last night I passed a big clot. Today I am back to spotting (a brownish color). Is this normal? When will this go away?
Wanda
AskDocWeb: Many women report excessively long periods during the first three months of taking a new birth control pill but you could still check with your doctor to make sure everything is okay.
Subj: Ortho Tri-Cyclen
Date: 3/19/2010
I have been on the ortho tri-cyclean for about 6 weeks, after the first week I broke out in a rash that has not gone away. My doctor said it was not the pills but I am now feeling that is has to be since there is nothing else I have changed. Currently waiting to hear back from my doc about an alternative. Also my husband has mentioned that I am extremely moody, cry at the drop of a hat and have a shorter temper with my kids. After reading some of these post and thinking the pill is also causing hair loss.

Subj: Want to go natural
Date: 3/23/2010
I am on othocycline and it made me gain weight so I decided to stop the pill. Well how long is it going to take the pill to clear out of my system? I just want to go natural.
Carine
AskDocWeb: The pill is out of your system in just a few days but it could take two or three months for your hormones and menstruation to return to their natural state.
Subj: Brownish discharge
Date: 3/26/2010
I’ve been taking ortho now since the 13th of this month. Since I got my period and finished I’ve had brownish discharge ever since. It goes from light light brown to a dark brown and the amount changes too. I was on loestrin 24 a few years ago and had 0 problems. I was put on ortho because my doctor said it is close to loestrin 24. Is this normal?
Alyssa
AskDocWeb: The normal vaginal discharge may appear clear, cloudy, white, and/or yellowish when dry on clothing. A normal discharge may also contain white flecks and may at times be thin and stringy. Since you just started this new pill your discharge could be either spotting or an abnormal discharge. You will have to consult with your gynecologist so that he or she can determine if this is normal for you or not.
Subj: Wait it out?
Date: 3/28/2010
I started ortho tri cyclen a few month ago and it has cleared up my acne greatly, but my periods are still pretty heavy and my cramps have only lighted up a little. Should I try a new type or wait it out?
Rica
AskDocWeb: If it has been more than three months then you may want to check with your doctor. It takes that long for the body to adjust to the change in pills.
Subj: Skipping sugar pills
Date: 4/1/2010
I am on Tri-Sprintec. Does skipping sugar pill & going straight to new pack of pills increase chance of pregnancy?
Lilly
AskDocWeb: While it is possible to skip a period by skipping the sugar pills, there is always a risk of unwanted and unpredictable spotting, cramps, and other problems if you do. You may be able to get away with it once but your uterus needs to shed each month. You also mess up your body’s monthly hormone cycle. Skipping pills is not recommended.
Subj: Bloated and acne
Date: 4/2/2010
Feeling super bloated and acne is getting worse….

Subj: First month is completely insane
Date: 4/3/2010
I started taking tri-sprintec in January 2010. (My reason for going on the pill was to clear my skin an to also, wont lie, enhance my breast size since Im small). The first month was horrible. Ive never been depressed in my life, but after i began taking it depression hit me hard. My family, my boss, co-workers and my boyfriend were begging me to get off the pill, but since im really stubborn, i continued on taking it. Its been almost 4 months and I dont feel depressed anymore. However, I do have really bad mood swings from time to time. People tell me that I seem more selfish and cold towards everyone. I honestly cant tell, but im not disregarding their observations. My face cleared out nicely, but i just recently started breaking out on my back. Its gotten better now since i freaked out and started buying products to clear the acne from my back. My breasts seem to have gotten slightly bigger (still waiting on the big wow). Its not a bad pill to take. Yes, the first month is a completely insane change in mood swings and body changes. Nonetheless, its doing its job. Slowly, but its doing it. Just wondering if my breasts would get much bigger if i continue on taking the pill. And how long would it be until i see a significant difference?
Jackie
