Subj: Going off of Ortho Tri-Cyclen

I have been on ortho tri cyclen for almost 3 years and just stopped taking it a month ago. The whole time i was on the pill, it helped with my cramps and made my periods regular (which was why I went on it originally), however, it did make me gain about 15 pounds in the first few months and I had a lot of mood swings, depression, and nausea through out the whole 3 years. That was usually only if I skipped a pill or took it later than my scheduled time, however. Now that I am off of it, I feel a lot worse. For the first week when I was off it, I thought it was great because I had instantly lost weight and there was a lot less bloating. In the last week though, I’ve gained weight and feel really uncomfortable and self conscious of my body… and now that it’s around the time of my period, I’m having all of the symptoms that I’m going to start, but have no visual signs of starting. I’m already 3 days late. I don’t think I’m pregnant though, I mean I took a test and I know they can be wrong, but… I don’t know. Are these symptoms normal after going off of ortho tri cyclen?

AskDocWeb: Yes, just as it took awhile to get used to the pill when you first started taking it, it takes awhile for your body to return to your normal hormone levels.

Subj: Bigger breasts?

I’ve been on orth tri cyclen lo for 2 months, and my breasts have gotten much bigger, and are extremely tender. Is this a side effect of the birth control?

Subj: Getting pregnant after stopping Ortho Tri-Cyclen?

I started taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen when I was 16 years old and I’m 29 now. I’ve never had any problems while taking it. When I was about 19 I switched to Depo and had a period for almost 2 months straight. I did not get another shot and went back to the pill and have been on it ever since. My husband and I want to have a baby and I’m going off the pill. I just took my last “active” pill yesterday. My periods were pretty regular before I went on the pill, but they were really heavy and would last 7-9 days. I’ve been taking the pill for so long and I’m not sure what to expect when I go off the pill. I am worried that it is going to take a long time for my period to come back or that I won’t ovulate and I won’t be able to get pregnant for a while. How long should it take me to start ovulating again and having periods? How long should it take me to get pregnant?

AskDocWeb: While it is possible to get pregnant within days of quitting the pill, it is more likely to take several months. Overall, about 50% of women who intend to get pregnant after stopping birth control pills become pregnant within the first three cycles after quitting and 90% get pregnant within the first year.

Subj: Zits, moods swings, and bloating

I started on TRI-CYCLEN 28 back in December 2009. Immediately I started to break out with big painful zits, which the doc said would subside…no luck with that. I also became miseralbe, very severe moods swings. I have always been slim, but after starting on the pill I have became very bloated in the tummy. I was 2 weeks into my 4 pack of pills and throw them out in a fit of rage…Ever since that miserable day I have been feeling a little better everyday, like old self again. Happy and playing with the kids again and my face is slowly getting better. No more huge zits, but lots of dark blemishes left behind. No more pills for this chick.

Subj: Bloated but that went away

I have been on tricylcen lo for 2 and half weeks now and haven’t experienced too many side effects. I felt extremely bloated the first week but that seems to have gone away. I was really afraid of gaining weight but it doesn’t seem as though I have yet. My acne seems better too I think.

Subj: Very costly

I’ve taken ortho lo dose for an ovarian cyst, and have no complications. The ortho lo dose is very costly per month $66.00 are there any discount plans that come with this RX. I have a co-worker that takes another lo dose birth control and her ob/gyn offered some type of discount plan, she only pays $24.00. I could use all the help that’s availble.

Subj: Nausea and more tired

Ive been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for about 4 months now. It makes me have nausea makes me feel tired more often than normal. It recently has made me very thirsty, to the point where I drink about 4-5 bottles of water a day. But the plus is it makes my periods lighter.

Subj: Side effects

I am 18, not sexually active, active in sports and went on the depro vera shot because it was supposed to help with insanely painful cramps during my period and acne. The night after I got the shot for the first time, I was sick to my stomach, light headed and had problems with over heating. The shot did stop my period for 2 months but the third month I bleed for 2 and a half weeks straight with awful cramps the first week and drastic mood swings throughout the entire time has hurt my relationships with family and friends. Is there any pill considered safe for a teenager? All the reviews I read are very mixed and frankly scare me. The dr has switched my to the ortho tri cyclene pill starting next week.

Subj: Missed 4 pills

I have been taking ortho tri cyclen for years and recently forgot and missed four pills. Three light blue and one dark blue. Without thinking I doubled up two in the morning and then two in the evening. Now I am wondering if that was the right thing to do. I did feel very nausea but hoping there wasn’t any real harm in that.

AskDocWeb: Taking 2 in the morning and then 2 in the evening equals an overdose. That may cause some nausea and withdrawal bleeding but no serious ill effects have been reported. Of course you are at risk for pregnancy any time that you miss taking 2 or more pills and the instructions say to use a backup method of birth control. Please read the instructions again or talk to your doctor or pharmacist for special instructions.

Subj: Does tri sprintec work right away?

It my time being on birthcontrol pill I start tri sprintec on a Sunday night 9PM without have my period yet and my husband forgot to pull out. Will the birthcontrol work right away?

AskDocWeb: Sorry Amy, birth control does NOT provide immediate protection. The medication in the pill has to build up in your body in order to provide maximum protection. That is why the instructions say to use a backup method of birth control for the first seven days because you may become pregnant during that time.

Subj: Expiration date

So I got ortho on April 1st of this year, and its May now. The packet says it expires May 11, but not what year. Is it going to expire next week or next year?

Subj: Skip the green pills?

I’ve loved everything about the pill, except that very often I start my period a week early, once I start the blue pills. And I bleed that entire week like a normal period, but then when I take the green pills, it’s like I have a second full period. I wanted to know that if this happens, and I bleed for a full period during the blue pills, could I skip the green pills and start a new pack, because I have already had my period?

AskDocWeb: Skipping pills is not recommended so talk to your doctor before trying anything like that. The placebo pills are there to help you maintain the habit of taking a pill at the same time every day.

Subj: Crazy hot flashes

I have been on orthotricyclen for 2 1/2 years. So far, my periods have been regular but my left leg’s been hurting for almost a year now. I recently ended up in the emergency room for chest pain and SOB. I have crazy hot flashes frequently. I am going crazy. Might it be side effects from the pill?

AskDocWeb: Hot flashes are not listed among the officially recognized side effects of Ortho Tri-Cyclen. On the contrary, most birth control pills help to reduce or eliminate hot flashes.

I have been on the ortho tri-cyclen lo pill for almost 7 yrs after my second child they found a cyst on my ovaries. I have been worried that the cyst can come back? Is this possible? How dangerous is it to take these pills if even so at all? Are cyst common when taking ortho tri lo? And if I stop taking the pill are there any side effects? Thanks, concerned.

AskDocWeb: Cyst-like syndrome has been reported in users of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo but the manufacturer neither confirms nor refutes it. Epidemiological studies have shown a decreased incidence of functional ovarian cysts in those taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. Your body goes through a period of adjustment when you go off the pill and it is not unusual to stop getting periods for a few months. Most of the side effects go away after discontinuing with a couple of possible exceptions. Recent studies suggest that even a year after discontinuing use, women still have low libido related to the pill. It is not known how long the low libido lasts or if it is permanent. Also a study in the United States showed an increased risk of developing myocardial infarction even after discontinuing oral contraceptives that persists for at least 9 years for women 40-49 years who had used oral contraceptives for five or more years. This increased risk was not demonstrated in other age groups.

Subj: Can’t keep the pill down

I just started to take the ortho tri cyclen lo I’m still on week one and every time I take it I puke it back up I feel dizzy is this normal?

AskDocWeb: No it is not normal, and it sounds like a talk with your doctor may be a good idea. Obviously if you are vomiting up the pill then it is not providing much protection.

Subj: Acne prone

I have been taking Ortho Tri Cylcen for about a week now. My skin is already acne prone, but this has made it much worse. Will this problem go away once my body adjusts?
