Subj: Good experience with Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo
Date: 7/31/2010
I have been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for almost 7 years and I am 25yrs old. It’s crazy when I read all these bad reviews because I have never really experienced any of these issues. Every once in awhile, I have spotting but the pill has almost erradicated my migraine issues and made my periods light. I do notice some breast tenderness around that time of month and a bit of nausea but I got those symptoms even before I was on the pill.

Subj: Midol or Pamprin?
Date: 8/1/2010
I’m going to start taking Ortho-Tri Cyclen next Sunday and I was wondering if it is safe to use things like Midol or Pamprin while on it?
Heather
AskDocWeb: In looking for possible drug interactions, there is a minor interaction listed between your birth control and products containing acetaminophen (both Midol and Pamprin). Ortho Tri-Cyclen may decrease or delay the effects of these products by increasing glucuronidation. With the usual therapeutic dosage, taking them together is not likely to cause any problems.
Subj: Two week period
Date: 8/2/2010
i have been taking ortho tricicline lo a little over a year now and now i have been on my period almost two weeks why
Tiffany
AskDocWeb: We don’t know why but it may be a good idea to check with your doctor.
Subj: Is this normal for TriNessa?
Date: 8/5/2010
I’m currently taking TriNessa. My doctor switched me from Lo-Estrin to Trinessa in June of 2010 because I was having severe breakthrough bleeding on Lo-Estrin (the 3rd birth control I’ve tried since the birth of my daughter almost a year ago). I’m about to start my 2nd placebo round in a week, but had these symptoms from the 2nd week into my 2nd cycle: *Nausea and vomiting (3 nights in a row) *Moderate breast pain *Headaches *Spotting with stringy brown discharge (started 1 week before placebo week). *Cramps increasing in severity (started 5 days prior to placebo week). I should also add that I take my pill like clockwork (I actually set an alarm to take it everyday). My husband and I do not use any other form of birth control other than the pill. My pregnancy tests are coming up negative, but I really feel as though my period is right around the corner. My question is if this is normal for TriNessa? I’ve never had this happen on a pill before (or any PMS symptoms before taking any pills), but then again, I’ve never taken a triphasic pill before. I’m wondering if I should go off this pill and try again for yet ANOTHER pill? Or give this one another month? Help… Ugh…I hate birth control pills.
Kellii
AskDocWeb: Even when you follow the instructions exactly for perfect usage things don’t always go the way you hope. Those symptoms are not typical for TriNessa users so talk to your doctor.
Subj: Itchy bumps on my skin
Date: 8/5/2010
Hi I have been taking Tri Cyclen lo for about 6 months and really liked it (it did cause some spots on my face bc I work in the sun but it wasnt too bad). I ran out last month so I had to stop for two weeks until I got another pack I started again on a Friday on Saturday my boyfriend started noticing small bumps on my skin but Monday they were everywhere sometimes they’re itchy and sometimes they’re not. I took benadryl Monday night and the bumps got smaller but they are still there and it is now Thursday night and they are itchy again… I don’t have health insurance right now so I can’t see a physician. Could this be a reaction to the pill or something else?
Marissa
AskDocWeb: It sounds like hives, which could be an allergic reaction to something but, the number of possible causes is way to long to list here. If it is an allergic reaction, it can be life threatening and may require immediate medical attention.
Subj: Trivora
Date: 8/7/2010
I’m on trivora and I just finished my first pack of pills seven days ago and now i’m on my new pack; This is my first time on birth control. Everyday i’ve taken the pills at the exact same time with water. My boyfriend and I just had unprotected sex and he finished inside of me. Is there a chance i’m pregnant?
Katherine
AskDocWeb: Don’t worry, you had the maximum protection for birth control long before finishing the first pack. Trivora (ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) is also sold under the brand Names Alesse, Aviane, Enpresse, Lessina, Levlen, Levlite, Levora, Lutera, Lybrel, Nordette, Portia, Sronyx, Tri-Levlen, Triphasil-21, Triphasil-28, and Trivora-28.
Subj: Antibiotics and oral contraceptives
Date: 8/8/2010
I’ve been on the pill for 4 months now. And this month I took antibiotics for a bladder infection. This effects the pill but for how long? And 3 weeks later my partner ejeculated in me. Could I pregnant?
Jess
AskDocWeb: That depends on which antibiotic you used. According to the Mayo Clinic, no large, long-range studies have proven antibiotics to cause major interference with oral contraceptives except one. Rifampin has shown to definitively decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. There are a small percentage of women who may experience decreased effectiveness with the use of other antibiotics, so doctors usually advise the use of a condom or other backup method of birth control while on antibiotics. Unfortunately there is no way to know if you are in that small percentage until it is too late. Since most believe that it is better to err on the side of caution than to be sorry, consider using a barrier method of contraception for the duration of your antibiotic prescription.
Subj: Ulcerative colitis
Date: 8/20/2010
I was taking this birth control and while on it became extremely sick and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Do you think that the birth control has anything to do with this?
Faridah
AskDocWeb: That is one of the areas that needs a lot more research before there are good answers. Some women have reported that their birth control pill caused flares while others report that it kept them in remission. Right now there is no proof of either one.
Subj: Can you get pregnant?
Date: 8/21/2010
Can u get pregnant without using a condom and he has ejaculated while on this pill…if both of you hasn’t has sex in 3 months?
Tammy
AskDocWeb: The length of time that you haven’t had sex makes no difference in your ability to get pregnant. If you have been taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen continuously for more than 7 days then you have the maximum protection provided by this pill and the chance of getting pregnant is vary small. The main benefit of taking this pill is that you don’t have to use a condom every time you have sex, although condoms are still useful as a backup form of birth control.
Subj: Quick start method a mistake?
Date: 8/21/2010
I decided to go on Ortho a week ago in order to help regulate my periods and prevent unwanted pregnancy. I used the “quick start” method, which I think may have been a mistake. This required me to take 2 pills the first day, which made me feel terrible the following day. I thought my body was adjusting as I no longer had any upset stomach after that – but I did find myself extremely exhausted. I felt like I was in a fog and I had body aches, especially in my arms and legs. I also was feeling down and depressed, and feeling like I could cry at the drop of a hat is really not normal for me. I convinced myself that this would go away if I persisted, but decided last night (it would have been my 6th pill) that I absolutely could not risk these side effects sticking around right now. I am a teacher about to start school in a week and there is no way I could risk feeling terrible to start the school year. So, I stopped taking the pill. I am hoping to return back to normal within a week since I was only on the pill for the 5 days…how long should I expect it to take for me to feel like ME again?
Katie
AskDocWeb: Since you only took it for 5 days, it would be surprising if it took more than a week to ten days to feel like your normal self again.
Subj: Tingling in left arm
Date: 8/23/2010
Hi. I noticed someone else posted that they experienced tingling in their left arm on ortho tri cyclen lo. I’ve also been experiencing that to the point that it kept me awake at night. I went to an urgent care center and the doctor there told me I just strained my wrist, but I’m not so sure that it has nothing to do with the pill. I’ve also noticed mood swings, difficulty sleeping, nervousness, anxiety and lack of energy while being on this pill. I’ve called my doc but haven’t heard anything back yet. Even though I’ve only been on this for about 3 weeks I’ve stopped taking it and am waiting to talk with her. Is this such a good idea?
Penny
AskDocWeb: Discontinuing birth control pills can alter the timing of your menses and cause it to begin within days. As a general rule, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor before discontinuing any prescription drug.
Subj: Stomach stays bloated and hurts
Date: 8/23/2010
I have been taking ortho tri cyclen for almost a year now and noticed that my stomach stays bloated and hurts alot. And I had sex with my boyfriend and the condom sliped off and the sperm got on my panties and shorts and I always started my period about 2 pills before the green and I’ve not started yet could I be pregnant and is the pill doing my stomach like that. Please let me know!
Jenny
AskDocWeb: There is an increased risk of abdominal cramps and bloating with all oral contraceptives. If you have been following the instructions for taking your pills then there is very little chance of getting pregnant.
Subj: Spotting before period is due
Date: 8/24/2010
Question. I’ve been on OTL for 3 years now. On CD20 I started spotting VERY Light pink. Its now CD23 and I’m still spotting very light/watery pink. My period is due in 6 days. SO I started spotting 9 days before my period due date. Any idea as to what the problem is.
Rox
AskDocWeb: Spotting before your period is due is common. There is a fall in estrogen level around ovulation, which can cause spotting. However, if there is a chance you could be pregnant, as in missing pills, then it could be caused by implantation.
Subj: No weight gain
Date: 8/25/2010
I was on ortho tricycline low back when I was 17 and I was heavier then so I did not notice weight gain. I just started back on it at 23 and I have noticed an increase in appetite slightly but I have a huge self control and do not eat every time I feel hungry. I have not noticed any weight gain but you have to remember that 90% of losing weight is from dieting. That doesn’t mean going on fad diets. Diet just means what you eat on a regular basis. I do not eat fried foods, nor do I eat any meat or dairy. I’m a vegan so I put a lot of healthy food into my body. Try and remember that you should eat small meals every 3 hours instead of 3 meals and 2 snacks. Eating a lot of raw fruits and vegetables is a great way to get healthy as well. The pill does not actually cause weight gain, the hormonal changes is what can cause an increase in appetite. You just have to have self control. I have a friend who has lost 20 pounds since March just from eating differently. She does not exercise at all, so keep this in mind!
